Pet Adoption Day at Westchester Broadway Theater!

Posted on July 13, 2017 by RocklandNYMom Posted in Uncategorized .

Disclosure:  This is a sponsored post.

Annie Sandy (1024x1280)
In the Tony Award-winning musical, “Annie” which will be on stage at the Westchester Broadway Theatre from June 29 through September 10, the orphan Annie meets and adopts another orphan – the dog Sandy. They become inseparable, and their relationship is one which audiences cherish.

Sunny will be playing Sandy in WBT’s production of Annie. Sunny was adopted in the spring of 2012 for the revival of “Annie” on Broadway from the Houston TX Animal Control the day before she was to be put to sleep. She stayed with the show on Broadway until 2014 and has been out with the national tour ever since. Sunny is a Terrier Mix who is about 7 years old. Sunny loves toys that squeak and all children, especially red-headed little girls. Like the other great Sandy dogs, Sunny was rescued and trained by Bill Berloni, who is known for his training of rescue animals for stage, film and television. Sunny is the 23rd Sandy dog of Bill Berloni’s career. Throughout his career, Bill feels like he has “taken these dogs, saved their lives, and given them a purpose.”

In the spirit of Annie and Sandy, the Westchester Broadway Theatre invites everyone to create their own inseparable relationships at its Pet Adoption Day, Saturday, July 22, from 10:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at the theater.

WBT is partnering with several animal shelter and rescue organizations, and will welcome numerous dogs and cats who are in need of lifelong, loving homes. Everyone is welcome to come and maybe adopt a new family member. Tickets to see the show “Annie” are not required to attend; Pet Adoption Day is free, and your rewards for attending can be priceless.

Participating organizations include: Paws Crossed Animal Rescue; SPCA of Westchester; and Posh Pets Rescue. The event is being sponsored in part by Pet Smart.

In the show “Annie,” shortly after Annie and Sandy first meet, he sits by her side as she sings the classic song “Tomorrow.” Just as the song’s key lyric “the sun will come out tomorrow” reflects the hope for the future of these fictional characters, WBT’s Pet Adoption Day can afford an opportunity for everyone to help the sun come out for adorable animals in need of homes.

WHEN: Saturday July 22, 2017 – 10:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

WHY ISN’T DINNER THEATER MORE OF A THING?! That’s all I have been asking myself since we attended Annie at Westchester Broadway Theater last Thursday night.  Our family of four is OBSESSED! So much so that RNYD has already picked out our second show that he wants to attend this August, and I had to take a picture of the upcoming shows because I can’t wait to go see more!!!

WBT-Rcklnd-NY-Mom-06

We took little (E) for her 4th Birthday last week, and “oh my goodness!”  As a family we adore theater, we love Broadway, but sometimes with the expense of it, with young kids is such a gamble that we avoid it.  When we do go its includes dinner the whole shebang. Will the kids sit through it, especially after the car/train ride?  Will we find decent parking? Where can we eat that everyone will be happy? Will there be a crazy wait at the restaurant?

Westchester Broadway Theater handles ALL of that!  For a reasonably priced ticket you get, a short drive, close parking, a delicious meal (including desert and salad), AND a spectacular performance.   I feel like I could go on FOREVER, but I know you want me to get down to the nitty gritty- here goes…

Ten Reasons Dinner Theater Rocked and needs to be a thing:

  1.  Short easy drive from Rockland, Westchester, Northern Jersey
It literally took us 20 minutes to get there, no crazy traffic, just a straight shot to Elmsford.
  2. Free parking right there.
Yep, a nice large parking lot where you walk straight into the theater.
  3. Pretzel Encrusted Chicken
    wbt 7

    WBT 12
Seriously, the menu was awesome, but this sounded so neat I had to try it, so glad I did!!  (A) had the Broiled Filet of Sole, and (E) had the chicken fingers)WBT 16
    WBT 6
  4. CLEAN bathrooms
Important for me, but so much more for my 4 year old daughter, we must have gone 5 times, so this was a breath of fresh air.
  5. Small personal theater
    WBT 11
Cool for adults, and so much more for kids.  No distractions, an intimate performance where you can see it all.
  6. Comfortable seating
    wbt 9
RNYD has had 5 back surgeries, this is important, as is leg space.  Unlike many Broadway theaters WBT has comfy chairs, and room to breathe.  Little (E) could even stand without bothering other theatergoers.
  7. The talent on stage
    Orphans2 (1280x1024)
    Mansion Christmas (1280x1024)
You don’t even know you aren’t ON Broadway.  The bios of the actors speaks for itself, but even without reading, you know from the first number, these guys are fabulous.
  8. People still dress
I don’t know about you, but it irritates me that people wear denim to Broadway.  When I first started going people wore their Christmas and Easter outfits.  At WBT people were dressed for the occasion, it adds to the element.
  9.  Affordable for a family
Dinner and entertainment for a family of four (never mind the kind of caliber food and entertainment) is EXPENSIVE.  WBT has made it possible to give your family the experience in an affordable way (especially if you mention RocklandNYMom.com for your discount).
  10. The staff
    wbt 10
My little princess wore her birthday tiara, EVERY staff member we encountered commented on its loveliness and then treated her like a queen when they learned why she was wearing it.

All in all it was really, truly the most fantastic birthday experience for (E) and for the whole family.  (A) asked if we could go back for his birthday next year, and RNYD has picked out a concert event on 8/12 that he wants to attend.  I have already spied a few upcoming shows I will be purchasing gift (and personal) tickets for.  This is an experience not to miss.  A great intro to the stage for kids, and a memorable experience for the whole family.

Recommendations:

  1.  Time:    (A) is 7 and (E) is 4.  We went to an evening show- both made it through because the show was AWESOME, they couldn’t keep their eyes off of the stage, the is ABSOLUTELY suitable for younger kids as some of the Hollywood scare is not in the play, but I recommend the daytime showings for most children.  We didn’t get home until 11:30 and knew we had nothing planned for the following day.
  2. Money:  Who doesn’t love saving?  Mention RocklandNYMom.com to receive a discount!!!
  3. Dining:  They don’t have cups with lids- if you have a kiddo you are worried may spill, bring your own to fill.

Inspired by Little Orphan Annie, the 1924 comic strip by Harold Gray, Annie is a heart-warming story, filled with adventure and laughs that defines what family truly means. One of the longest running shows in Broadway history and the winner of seven Tony Awards, Annie, returns to the WBT stage from June 29 to September 10, 2017!

Annie Sandy (1024x1280)

Annie, one of the world’s best-loved musicals, is set in 1933 in New York City during the Great Depression. Little Orphan Annie is determined to find the parents who abandoned her years ago on the doorstep of a New York City Orphanage that is run by the cruel, embittered Miss Hannigan. With the help of the other girls in the Orphanage, she escapes to the wondrous world of NYC where she finds a new home and family in billionaire, Oliver Warbucks, his secretary, Grace Farrell, and a lovable mutt named Sandy. Notable musical numbers include “It’s the Hard Knock Life,” “Easy Street,” “I Don’t Need Anything But You,” and “Tomorrow.”

EasyStreet (1280x1024)

Peyton Fishman (Irvington) and Kaylin Hedges (Valley Cottage) star as Annie in alternating performances.  Michael DeVries is Daddy Warbucks, the billionaire business man. You may remember him in Wicked and Hello, Dolly, on Broadway. Susann Fletcher is Miss Hannigan, the cold-hearted orphanage owner. She starred as Louise Seger in WBT’s production of Always…Patsy Cline.  Warbucks’ secretary and love-interest, Grace, is portrayed by Celeste Hudson who was seen in Show Boat at WBT.  Miss Hannigan’s con-artist brother, Rooster, is played by Adam Roberts, who appeared on Broadway in Pippin and Spider-Man Turn Off the Dark.  The role of Lily, Rooster’s petty-thieving girlfriend, is played by Aubrey Sinn who starred as Maria in our production of The Sound of Music. John-Charles Kelly plays President Franklin D. Roosevelt.

A lively group of local girls play the orphans in Annie.  Anika Bobra (Armonk), Tahlia Ellie (Short Hills, NJ), Haylie Christiano and Ruby Griffin (both of Valley Cottage), Maureen Henshaw (Carmel), Nora Kennedy (Tappan), Molly Lyons (Wappinger’s Falls), Sasha Murray (Chappaqua), Lucy Neureuther (Harrison), Ella Stanley (Bronx), Lauren Sun (Rye Brook) and Gabriella Uhl (Cornwall

Young Chef’s Academy- Review!

Posted on July 3, 2017 by Sofija Duic Posted in Classes, Party, Reviews, Uncategorized .

My twin girls that turned 12 in September have been asking me to take a cooking class forever.  I guess all the snuggle times watching Chopped, Chopped Junior, MasterChef, and MasterChef Junior has helped them to catch the cooking bug.  So for the past few months, I have had them helping me around the kitchen as little sous chefs, but they became bored and wanted a “real cooking class”.  So after tons of research and checking out different types of cooking classes I came across Young Chefs Academy.  I saw that they were opening in New City and wanted to give them a try.  img_4771

We went to the Senior Chef class (they have several classes for different age groups).  This was a great class taught by Chefs Tina and Briana.  The kids in the class learned all about Thanksgiving leftovers and what to do with them (something us parents could use too).  On the menu was Chicken Tortilla Soup, Jicama Slaw and Guacamole.

img_4768

Chef Tina started the class with the basic rules of cooking – Mise En Place (Read it, Place it, Create it).  The girls were taught how to hold their fingers when using a knife to chop items so your fingers are not harmed.  A great little life lesson and a great starting point.  As the kids are chopping and getting everything ready to add in the pot, they continue to read the instructions for the Chicken Tortilla soup, work as a team to get everything ready and start to cook.  Chef Tina went over a great tip on how to check to see if the oil in a pan is ready to add the tortilla strips to fry. T  After everything was added (chicken gets added later), the kids were told to make sure to let the soup simmer, but to continue to stir the soup, remembering to “scrape” the bottom of the pot to pick up all the yummy flavors the tend to settle.

img_4774

While to soup cooks, the kids start the jicama slaw.  Chef Tina asked if anyone has ever had jicama, and went over its origin, the health benefits and what type of vegetable it is (a root vegetable from Mexico, and unlike a sweet potato you can not eat the skin). Chef Tina and  Chef Briana already shredded the jicama and the carrots to help save some time.  The kids work on juicing the lime, and learn all about how to get the most juice out of the lime. The kids learn about picking the cilantro off the stalk, Many tricks that were taught, I personally found super helpful and can’t wait to use.

img_4772

Once the kids add all the rest of the ingredients and dress the slaw, it’s time to make the guacamole.  The twins had a blast with this part of the lesson.  The best part for them was squeezing the avocado out of its shell. Once again Chef Tina gives them some great pointers in how to keep the avocado from turning brown and staying fresh for later use.

img_4776

The soup simmered for 30 minutes and was then blended to make it smooth.  The kids work on shredding the chicken, and add it into the soup.

WOW – all this preparation really made the kids work up an appetite – and smelling the food cooking, makes you want to taste the end results.  Well Young Chef’s students do just that. Once they have finished (and wash their hands) they get to taste the fruits of their labors!

img_4780

And let me tell you did we enjoy everything.  Everything was yummy, and we even learned about more ways to tweak our recipes (in case they were too spicy, or salty).  Each kid received a hard copy of the recipe to place in their Young Chef Academy recipe binder for later use.  After class, we barely made it into the car before the twins asked to go back for more classes.   Now with the winter around the corner, this is a better idea for my kids than watching tv, or playing video games.  We can not wait for January to sign up for more classes!!

img_4781img_4783

The girls liked learning new things as well as the opportunity to feel “grown up”.  I loved that they are learning practical life skills, reinforcing mathematics rules, and beginning a journey into feeling accomplished and independent.  We are a family that cooks together, it’s a part of our culture, the academy reinforces these things that are so important in our family dynamic,

What is the Bubble Bus?

It is often difficult to come up with ideas for entertainment at kids parties.  Especially when they are at varying ages.  Some may be too “young” for your whole crowd while others are too “advanced” for others.  This year (A) has requested laser tag, and (E) can’t go because she is too small, its forced me to come up with a plan b while the party happens for her, since I know she won’t want to be left out.

One amazing option out there is the Bubble Bus.  Everyone loves bubbles and proof of that is the reception that they received at our Egg Hunt this year.  We are always trying to think of ways to improve our events so this year we had the bubble bus come.  We were SO excited for the event, but the day of the weather was NOT cooperating.

It was cold and windy and we thought that there was NO WAY the bubbles would work out.  Well, we were super wrong (and happily so).  Peter came nice and early to get things set up, and rode around the site to find the best placement.  Then he set up special tools to make sure that the bubbles didn’t break right away and would still work.  We were still a little skeptical.

Well, there was certainly no need.  The bubbles were awesome, and the owner Peter is so lovely to deal with.  All the kids there (ages ranged from under a year to 14 years old) had fun chasing them and watching in wonder.  The music added a nice touch as well.  After the event we had SO many compliments on the addition of Bubble Bus, and several inquiries for parties.

RNYM’s Father’s Day Picks 2017

 1.  Order in…

Luigis Logo

http://www.luigiogradys.com/

(845) 735-9110

RNYD does not love going out to eat.  Like many dads he would really prefer to stay home where he can eat well and be super comfy… surrounded by the family.  Luigi O’Grady’s has done it again, great menu’s for great dads.  We ordered the BBQ special last year and really loved it.   As always there was more than enough for our family of 5, it was affordable and so so good.

2.  Take care of his baby…

RNYD just got a new car, the car he’s wanted for a long time.  As a gift, a little something to help him pamper that new ride.  Some Gift Certificates for detailing on it.  He will enjoy it (and so will you) when you get to ride in that nice clean car.

We recommend: Blauvelt Auto Spa

Address: 585 NY-303, Blauvelt, NY 10913

Phone: (845) 365-1200

3.  Make a memory…

dadddyandm2017

Dads need to take pictures too.  Make it something that he loves to do, nothing super posed, playful sessions with a photographer from our directory is just the right fit.  Is dad (or grandpa) musical?  Have them play music together.   Does he love sports? How about down at the field with the kids… What about putting that tough guy persona aside to paint his princesses nails???

4. Make Music…

For Christmas this year I bought RNYD and Amazon Echo– (affiliate link)  its fabulous.  You can link it right to your prime and listen to whatever music you are in the mood for, get weather and news, shop from your couch and so much more.  He has enjoyed it thoroughly.
A love and appreciation for music is huge in our house, with RNYD being a bass player and all.   Each of our music school members has a unique approach to teaching ALL ages. Set “Dad” up with the lessons he’s always wanted.

5.  Kick it up a notch….

Fitness Kickboxing Logo

We adore the workout at Fitness Kickboxing NY.  Dads want to get in shape, but a “regular old gym” may not be for him.  Give the gift of health with a kick.  The workouts incorporate cardio, boxing, kicking, as well as strengthening.

If your “Father” would prefer a fabulous gym with all the frills and a myriad of different class choices, check out the fitness center at JCC Rockland.  The facilities are beyond compare, the offerings plentiful, and the staff lovely.

Going Swimmingly

Posted on June 15, 2017 by RocklandNYMom Posted in Classes, Classes for Kids, Health and Wellness, Reviews, Uncategorized .

One of the things that is nicest to have occur with this site, is when someone is genuinely happy with a recommendation. Which happens so often here.  It makes all of the work that we put into the site totally worth it. I recently had one such experience and I just had to share it with you all.

Condor's-8

As you know, my children have been swimming with Condors for 3 years now.  First (A) and now (E), have learned, thrived, and enjoyed every moment.  Well, it was after seeing the constant posts for my children at Condors, that a friend (and phenomenal directory photographer) Jennifer Tesker signed up her older daughter who was looking for a fun activity, and the peace of mind  that comes with knowing that your children can swim safely at a town pool, family pool, birthday party, at the beach, anywhere really.  Jennifer was kind enough to take some photos at one of our most recent classes (so you all don’t have to see my bad ones).

Condor's-18

Back in November she signed her up and her progress is nothing short of Amazing.  In the short time that she has been with the Condors she has improved from being a beginner swimmer to just before being selected for pre-team (the development program for the Condors competitive team).

Condor's-2

Condor's-5

In fact, she enjoys it so much that her little sister, who was originally uninterested, decided that she wanted to swim and is a swimmer now.

Condor's-14

If that wasn’t enough, they have also referred friends who are now loving the program as well.  I caught up with the girls after class and asked them what was their favorite part… They said “everything”, when pushed they said learning new things, new ways to swim.

Condor's-1

Condor's-4

Condors are holding registration for summer sessions now, and since the Felix Festa Pool will be under construction they are holding all classes at: 44 Henry Kaufman Road Orangeburg NY 10972.  The schedule is below:

Support Local Farms: Pick Your Own Fruits and Veggies!

Posted on June 8, 2017 by Ashley Carmichael Posted in Ashley's Lists, Day Trips, Out and about..., Things to Do!, Uncategorized .

It’s the most wonderful time of the year!
Head out for some family time and support your local farmers.
Last year we picked sweet peas, strawberries and blueberries. This year we hope to pick to add peaches, green beans and cherries to our list!
