Build Your Summer S’mores Kit!

If you know me, or have BBQ’d with me, then you’ve probably been subject to my fireside feasts.  I LOVE FIRE!  When we purchased our home and our lake house one of the major items needed was a fireplace, they go all winter long.  In the summer it is no different.  I made sure that we have a fire pit at each, and I love to make a fire, have a drink, and make ridiculous treats by the fire.  To me its the embodiment of summer.  My happy place, my solitude.  I am going to share some of the awesome stuff we do with you.  This one is just how I built my unbelievable s’mores kit.

I know this is a trend now, but I SWEAR (anyone can attest to it, I was doing this a long time before it was chic.  I have linked you up to all of the items I suggest through my buddies Amazon, but I find most of my stuff at Walmart, and the regular food store.

First and Foremost– the items you need in order to do this:

  • Fire Pit
  • Indoor S’mores maker
  • S’mores sticks

You also NEED somewhere to store everything- my family KNOWS not to touch the smores kit, its OFF LIMITS, I don’t care how much you want a sweet treat.  I keep everything packed up in a plastic tub so it keeps fresh, and it helps them to know what they CANNOT eat.

When I make the kit I put them on a nice tray for presentation.

The bread– (what we affectionately call the outer portion of the s’more) Graham crackers are fine, but it gets super fun when you mix up the bread parts.

  • Chocolate Graham crackers
  • Graham crackers
  • Cookies
Marshmallows– THERE ARE SO MANY GREAT OPTIONS!!
  • Vanilla Stuffed
  • Chocolate stuffed
  • Cookies and cream stuffed
  • Stawberry
(also worth noting, there was a chocolate peppermin stutffed option this winter, I purchased some and held onto them until summer and they were great so i’ll stock up again this winter)
Candy-
  • Reeces
  • Cookies and cream hershey
  • Hershey classic
  • Fruity pebbles bar
I just went to Hershey with the kids and found some great new flavors I HAD to buy and try (mint, strawberry and birthday cake, will let you know how that went.

BASICally the Perfect INVITE!

Posted on April 25, 2021 by RocklandNYMom Posted in Birthdays, Events, Items, Party, Photo Obsessed, Reviews, RNYM Events, Rockland Babies, Services, Specialty Items, We're Having a Party .

Disclosure:  This is a sponsored post, all opinions expressed are my own.

I am a High School Teacher.  More specifically, a teacher of Senior students.  It stands to reason then that at this time of year (every year) I am very focused on Senior events.  All which culminate in the big event, graduation.

Last year the kids didn’t get much leeway in terms of celebrating.  This year, we are able to again have some gatherings, especially when outdoors, and distanced in some way.  Having just spent a year (give or take a few months) with so many restrictions, it’s no wonder that people may be doing things up a bit more than usual.

Well, it’s almost MAY and time to get planning.  I know that lots of people have made the switch to online invitation platforms, but I still LOVE a paper invitation.  In fact, if you follow me you know that I am VERY picky about my invitations.  I like them to usually be photograph invitations for that personal touch (also makes a nice memory), something you can really personalize (180 colors- and you can customize EACH element on the card).  In addition, I like the invite itself to be of sturdy card stock.  There is something about receiving a card or invitation in the mail, that is made of nice thick card stock.

So, as always I will share a favorite with you, and then explain why.  You need to check out Basic Invite.  Their invitations, announcements, photo graduation announcements etc are completely customizable. While looking around I found that they had some really cute nurse graduation announcement choices as well (quite a few of my students go into nursing)!  They are printed on sturdy card stock, attractive and fast, but there’s more.  There are 40 different color choices for envelopes (which are also peel and stick, thank goodness)- so your envelope can coordinate with your card!!

There are also these SUPER cool clear (we called them see-through) ones you can order!!!

Basic Invite has great customer service, and even a service where they ADDRESS the cards for you!  Don’t have time to upload them?  There’s also an address capturing service!!!  As a super busy working mom, this is HUGE!  This allows you  to share a link on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, or any other social media to request your friends and family’s addresses. The addresses are stored in your account and can be selected during the design process. Basic Invite offers recipient address printing at no cost on all card orders!!

Then ANY TIME you are sending cards (think parties, announcements, holidays) you can click on the people you want to send the correspondence to and BAM, Done. For me personally, this is AMAZING, it’s hard enough to find time to design all of these things let alone sit and write them all out.

My 5th grader is also “graduating” this year.  So it’s even more on my mind.  We may do a small family event to celebrate for him (think immediate family BBQ), since he is missing so much. Well, it stands to reason that I would need to look at invitations or a grad announcement.  I was able to find a few that I liked, customize them just the way that I wanted, and then order SAMPLES to see which I would like the best, yep that’s right custom samples!  Changing colors and fonts as well as the style or card was super easy, you do not have to be super computer savvy to do it.  I even let AJ customize one (can you guess which one?).  Uploading the photos was also easy as pie.  I was given an ETA of one week and they arrived as promised.  You may have watched me unveil them on our social media stories.  Excuse the cell phone photo, I couldn’t help myself… The quality is impeccable, in fact, we have decided to make my new nephews birth announcements with Basic Invite as well.  ANNNNNND, we may have fallen in love with this Birthday Invite…

Let’s get social!  If you want to see more Basic Invite check them out on their social media handles: Facebook –Pinterest –Instagram –Twitter!

I (of course) have a discount code for you too!! Right now Basic Invite is offering 15% off with coupon code: 15FF51

Communion Prep Begins! Saying “Yes” to the Dress!

Posted on March 23, 2021 by RocklandNYMom Posted in Events, Party, Reviews, Services, Shopping, Specialty Items .

Disclosure:  This is an unsponsored post.  We simply got an appointment at this amazing shop and wanted to share.

With E’s health issues at the forefront of our mind we needed to start making preparations for her First Holy Communion.  Although we are still unsure of what it will look like for her, we wanted to make it as special as possible.  E loves fashion, she chooses my clothing most days.  I knew she would want an extra special experience for her dress shopping.  I researched a few places that we could take her, and decided on Little Nikki’s in Ho Ho Kus NJ.  It’s less than a half hour away from us here in Rockland, and the shop just looked special.

Well I was right.  I emailed to make an appointment, hoping that we could do it safely and solo.  Well, that’s the only way they do it.  You book a 1 3/4 hour time slot and its just you and whomever you would like to bring.  We decided to invite the ladies in the family.  The whole making of the appointment was easy as pie.

The day of we showed up and what a CUTE SHOP!  So many beautiful dresses, I wish my wedding shopping had been this sweet!!!  You start by getting a quick tour of where to find things, and then a rolling rack that you can add any dresses you are looking to try on to.

Once we selected the options that we liked, E and I went to start the fashion show.  There are shoes you can wear while trying for effect, and of course we had to try the HEELS!

We tried so many variations of dress (there is really something for everybody) from layered, to eyelet lace, to classic, to prairie style. Our second runner up even had POCKETS!!!  It is not easy to decide (especially when you have a lot of opinions).

Here is what I LOVED.  As we modeled, the owner watched carefully, and provided some input but watched more carefully.  She waited for E to have a reaction.  She knew when E had chosen a dress before I did.  She came right in and completed the look with a veil and a tiara (how did she know E was a tiara gal?), and that was it.  I couldn’t believe my eyes, and neither could E.  We were sold.

After we made the decision we got to go over to the adorable photo-op area (now you’re speaking my language) to take “Said Yes to the Dress” pic ( I am saving the dress one because I want it to fit well when you see it).  What a great experience!!!  As always, should you decide to go to Little Nikki’s we appreciate you letting them know you heard it here.

What was even better, is that my sister is due with baby #2 in April, and so we walked next door to check out the fabulous collection of Baptism clothing as well, something tells me this is not our last trip :o)

Fall Wall Clock Update

Posted on September 24, 2018 by RocklandNYMom Posted in Crafts, Items, Photo Obsessed, Reviews, Specialty Items, Uncategorized .

Disclousre:  This is an unsponsored post.  All opinions expressed are my own.

If you’ve been following RNYM for a while you know all about my wall clock.  I am always looking for fun and interesting ways to display my photos (of which my husband says I have 2 million annually).  That’s how the clock came about.  It wasn’t long before that was simply not enough and I needed to change it seasonally.  I began by painting red frames for Christmas time, then was unsure about what color to do for spring and put it out there for you all to choose.  You went with purple.

This past fall I decided that just doing another color was too tame.

Instead I went looking for a fall shaped frame.  Easier said than done.  I ended up on ETSY after extensive searching and found a few people who made pumpkin frames.  I messaged each one and finally found someone who could do what I was looking for.  https://www.etsy.com/listing/557182219/pumpkin-halloween-picture-frame-4-inch-x

The frames were complete in no time and I was able to easily use the inserts on the back to cut my 5×7 photos to fit.

Here is my finished product.

The frames are custom to my liking, and can be for yours too.  One of the most attractive parts is they were also cheaper than going to the local craft store and purchasing a regular frame.

*RNYM was not compensated for writing this post we just wanted to share our idea.  Regardless, if you should choose to use our link please make sure to mention that you read about them here.*

Haircuts and Makeup (teens, tweens, and grown-ups) BY APPOINTMENT

sparkle banner

Sparkle Up – New City- 845-634-0140

Boys or girls it doesn’t matter.  Call Deborah to make an appointment to freshen up your look for back to school.  Kids and grown-ups alike can get a great haircut for that first day.  Make it an outing, boys get a cut and can add color (and/or sparkle) and a tattoo.  Girls get a cut, color/sparkle and a tattoo or nails painted.

Have a teen or tween at home who is new to the world of makeup?  You can schedule a make-up lesson where Deborah will teach the art of applying and achieving that natural look you are going for.  She can even give some lessons on how to do your hair before school (for yourself, or for that special child in your life).

First Day of School 024

Yeah Pinterest is full of “Back to school” photo ideas, here is what we did last year for props: http://rocklandnymom.com/2015/08/22/back-to-school-photos-craft/.  These are the t-shirts we update and take a photo in yearly as well: http://rocklandnymom.com/2015/09/17/first-day-t-shirt-craft/.  We HIGHLY recommend Hudson Adrift if you need a t-shirt.

IMG_0522 Also, Target usually has awesome banners that look like school supplies that you can use if you aren’t super crafty.  The most I have seen them for is like $3 so its an easy and cheap photo prop for the kids to use (PS they have them for most holidays too, I am ALWAYS buying them).  Amazon has some too like this Pencil Banner (click affiliate link).

Lunch Box Surprise

Sweet Spot Studio Cakes –

I really don’t remember where I saw this idea, but I always try to add a little note in their lunches the first day of school, but a little good luck treat made by Sweet Spot Studio Cakes would really make the grade.

Back to School Cookies Ness

Teacher Gifts

Totally not NECESSARY but always appreciated since teachers have jitters too… A little personalized gift, or even a first day cookie to match your kiddo’s.  We highly recommend the craftiness of Hudson Adrift.

Enrichment Classes

Looking for some extra-curricular activities for your kiddos?  Need to burn a little energy?  Check out our Classes Directory- we have dance, to swim, music, art, cooking, martial arts, theater and so much more to suit your needs.  http://rocklandnymom.com/directories/classes-for-kids/

Tutoring

Sometimes we need a little help along the way.  Curriculum change so quickly and the last thing you want to do is drill your kids on schoolwork when you are so busy with everything else and may just want to be “parent” and not “teacher”.  Plus lets face it, they listen a bit better to others than us sometimes.  In this case you can reach out to a tutors who are teachers and specialize in whatever your child(ren) are struggling with.  Check out the links below or see our Services Directory for details: http://rocklandnymom.com/directories/services-directory/

Night off of Cooking

First Day of School is hectic.  Take the night off of cooking so you have time to hear all about the first day.  Luigi O’Grady’s has a great family dinner that feeds our family of 5 easily and we still always have leftovers.  There are great choices that appeal to both adults and kids – plus have healthy stuff like their awesome grilled veggies and salad.

Luigis Family Dinner Flyer

A book for the night before :o)

Lots of nerves for kids, parents and teachers.  Start a great new tradition of reading a nice back to school story to ease the jitters.  Here are some great suggestions (click the book to go right to the Amazon link).

Dinosaur Bedroom

Posted on January 12, 2017 by RocklandNYMom Posted in In the Home, Specialty Items .

Disclosure:  This is a sponsored post and some links are affiliate links.  All opinions expressed are my own.

Our house has been under construction for months.  We need to renovate so that we could separate the kids who have shared a room since little (E) was born.  At 3 and 6 we decided it was time for them to have their own spaces.  I have decided to share both with you.  I am proud of them and the kids are pleased.

(A) is obsessed with Dinosaurs.  So much so that he had a Dino Birthday (write up to come) this past year and when I asked him what type of bedroom he would like, he was really excited to have it Dino themed as well.  I am no interior designer, but I did my best.

I wanted to make the room mature but also fun, something that he didn’t outgrow in a year or so.  As he is also in 1st grade and really starting to get into reading, I wanted to make a reading “nook” as well.  That is where I first focused my efforts.  I decided to create a Pteranodon nest for him that he could sit in and read.

aidan-reading-nook

The nest itself is a bean bag chair, and the eggs are “rock” pillows.  I then found this great leaf canopy (made by IKEA) to put over the top. The dinosaurs on the side are from (A)’s birthday party but can be found HERE.

spinosaur

The Spinosaur shown was purchased from Etsy- but they have some smaller cool versions on AMAZON.  We used this one and the map shown framed above (created to look like our back yard) to spice up the room.  These were also from (A)’s birthday party.

cave-drawings

Over his bed we added these “cave drawings” that he made.

making-cave-drawings

Blanks can be purchased HERE.  These are held up with 3M products.

aidans-room-bed

(A) wanted to keep his quilt so I just added some cute dinosaur sheets that coordinated.

img_4146

I love dream catchers, so I had to find one that was “on theme” (yes that is a Triceratops in the middle).  I did and am OBSESSED. (A) made me read the legend several times and he is keeping it in his night stand.  I actually have to find one for his sisters room now too.

dinosaur-lamp

I updated his lamp with this Glow in the dark vinyl sticker (which can be removed)- and then added them a few other places as well.

trophy-area

These shelves are a great way to display trophies and belts.  We decorated with his sign that he made with Mary of Underground Finds and Furniture (it glows in the dark too).

img_4096

He needed somewhere to store his things, so I found this great old toolbox for him to keep things organized.  I made the banner for him, and then added the dinosaur skull lamp he received as a birthday gift from his cousin.

All in all he is SO pleased, as am I.  He now has a bedroom that he loves and can grow with him- and so does his puppy.

Sabrina’s Murals and the Nursery of my Dreams!

Posted on August 29, 2016 by Ashley Carmichael Posted in Crafts and More Crafts, In the Home, Reviews, RNYM's Picks, Services, Specialty Items, Uncategorized .

Disclosure:  This is an unsponsored post.  All opinions expressed are our own.

-Ashley Carmichael

3rd baby, and finally the nursery of my dreams!

When I had my first son, we were living in a one bedroom apartment and I used an alcove as the nursery. When I was expecting my 2nd son we were living with my parents, so we used an extra room for his crib and dresser, never really making much of it. Now, as I am expecting my 3rd (and my last), I had the urge to have a ‘perfect’ nursery.  In doing so, my goal was to keep the baby room as budget friendly as possible. To accomplish this feat I planned to try to DIY, and recycle as much as I could.

Paint the room.

While my husband and I were debating on colors to paint the walls of the baby room, I stumbled upon posts from Sabrina’s Murals on Facebook. WOW. I was instantly in love with her work! So naturally, I jumped on Pinterest for ideas. I sent Sabrina a message and set up a time for her to come see the room and talk out ideas.

Sabrina is the sweetest, a total breeze to work with, she is always smiling! I explained loosely with some ideas I found online that I was looking to do trees, stars, and a moon – like a forest scene. She was very honest about design concepts, color schemes and how to make it work in the room.   Since the room is small, and the design I wanted was complicated, we decided only to do a small portion of the room to not over do it.

Her ideas were so spot on, I couldn’t resist booking her!

A few weeks later, she emailed me a sketch of the mural and I melted! It was exactly what we had discussed.  She arrived the next morning at 9am. Sabrina told me to come in through out the day to see the progress, but I wanted to wait for the big reveal! She finished around 4:30pm – seems like a long day to have someone in your house – but I honestly didn’t even know she was there!

The mural is PERFECT! I am so in love with the colors – exactly what I wanted. And the peaceful ambiance it brings to the room – is also exactly what I wanted. She even offered to come back after we had the baby and paint the babies name on the wall.

IMG_5127Sabrina with her masterpiece.

IMG_5128

IMG_5130

I find myself just sitting in the nursery when I need a few minutes of peace from the crazy chaos. I just love it.

Alphabet Frame

RNYM has this adorable alphabet on the wall in her playroom that I just love! (http://rocklandnymom.com/category/playroom-project/) So again I found myself on Pinterest working off this idea and found an idea for an alphabet that I thought would work. I ordered the wooden letters off of Etsy (https://www.etsy.com/shop/TheMonogramCompanySE?ref=l2-shopheader-name – letters arrived quickly!) and Sabrina left me the paint samples of the teal colors from the mural so I was able to match the color of the letters to the trees in the mural.

IMG_5469
IMG_5468

It was important to me to include the boys in the projects for the baby’s room to
help them feel included.  They loved picking the letters to paint – and we worked on letter recognition in the process.

I happened to have a large framed mirror lying around that was intended for a different project, but it was the perfect size to frame the letters. I matched the grey colors to the trees of the mural and painted the frame. I relaxed in the rocking chair and let hubby do the hanging – using small poster size command strips to hang the wooden letters.

IMG_6941Making sure his spacing was even.

Blanket Ladder
I love blanket ladders. So much easier than folding the hundreds of baby blankets you have, plus it doubles as decoration.

RNYM again to the rescue with a ladder she found on the side of the road. We (and by we I mean my wonderful Husband) sawed it in half, power washed, and sanded it down. I had left over paint from the walls and mural – easy! And it looks perfect in the room. Just by coincidence, the majority of my gender neutral blankets from my boys are teal and grey – perfect match.

IMG_6949 IMG_6957
My boys hard at work.

Closet Organization
Since the room is a bit small, we decided not to buy a dresser/armoire. I had hanging shoe organizers, and found baskets at the dollar store that fit perfectly in the slots. Great for holding onesies, burp clothes, tiny baby socks.  The baskets even fit great on the changing table.

Ashley Closet

Sonogram Photos
Photobarn.com was having a special promotion on free wooden photo prints (they do this often so if you are a photo junkie go sign up), and I was looking for some more wall decor…I couldn’t resist!  I ordered 2, used my sonogram photos, and they look adorable!

IMG_7288

The perfect gift from an amazing friend!
I knew she was up to something, she always is 😉 She had been asking me for a pair of jammies from when each of the boys were infants. I found a pair for each, that reminded me of when they were tiny and cuddly.

A few weeks later she surprised me with these amazing ELEPHANTS (which I happen to love)! This wonderful Etsy Shop – (https://www.etsy.com/listing/291624967/memory-elephant-handmade-elephant) took the boys jammies and sewed them into stuffed elephants!  Even embroidered their names on the feet. This gift could not be more perfect! Looking forward to having a matching one made for #3 as a keepsake.

The nursery turned out better than I imagined, I can’t wait for baby 3 to arrive!
