Sparkle Up Halloween

This past weekend RNYM held our first of MANY super fun events at Sparkle Up in New City.  The Halloween Party hosted over 30 adorable kids in costume and we all had a blast.  Deborah and I are hard at work planning the next event- so we thought we would let you know how this one went.

Kiddies were invited to come in costume and have their Hair, makeup and/or facepaint, nails, glitter tattoos and tattoos and hang out with friends.

Sparkle Up is just so much fun-  There is a dress up room to check out, a runway to walk- some adorable gifts you can purchase and then all the fun activities.  In fact, I am always shocked at how people think its only for girls- its not (A) and several other boys had a blast this past weekend.  Additionally, since (A) isn’t allowed to wear the hood and mask that go with his costume he was looking for something to make his head look cool – and it was Sparkle Up that ended up inspiring his Halloween look.

Deborah and her talented team, braided, sprayed, applied, and smiled for 3 hours as they attentively catered to each adorable need and want.  There isn’t really too much more to say except take a look at these photos!!!

We hope to see you at our next event on December 9th It’s Coronation Day! This event is a collaboration with Mandas Enchanted Events, where kiddos will be able to meet and greet with princess, dress up (come in your favorite) have your hair braided etc, make-up/glitter tattoo applied, nails painted, AND be crowned princess with a royal decree from a special guest!

Coronation Day Flyer 2017Sparkle Up is an amazing party and event venue, and so much more.  To make an appointment for a haircut, style, makeup application, lesson or more please contact Deborah at:  (845) 634-0140    or you can email her at:  sparkleup@me.com  As always, we appreciate if you mention that you heard about our adventures here if you should choose to go in on our recommendation.  <3

Look out for our full review of my makeup application for our family photos and so much more!!!

Getting into a Rhythm- New City School of Music

Posted on November 8, 2017 by RocklandNYMom Posted in Classes, Classes for Kids, Reviews, Uncategorized .

Disclosure:  This is a sponsored post.  All opinions expressed are my own.

As you may already have read (A) has begun drum lessons at New City School of Music.  We knew that he was musical- he has a general love with it.  Sleeps old school with his radio on listening all night, and asked for a record player for Christmas last year.  We just weren’t sure which instrument he would choose.   In fact, we have tried several instruments to see which was the right fit.  He chose drums.  I thought I would provide you with some insight as to what the Music School is truly about.

He’s already loving it 2 months in.  I’ve raved about Andrew his teacher before and I will touch on that again but first I want to let you know about some great behind the scenes going on at New City School of Music.  (A) was welcomed with a sign at the entrance when he began which made him feel super special.  He was then welcomed in the online and print newsletters <3

New City School of Music is INVOLVED in their students, its not just a once a week relationship.  The school ran Halloween contests with students to post hashtags on photos of them in costume for the prize of an amazon gift card.  They have a special reward program for students as they progress (I will tell you more at another time), and there’s more.

I received emails regarding optional (free) professional photos of the kids playing (be still my photo crazy heart), and an upcoming recital that we could sign up for.  My first instinct was that it was waaaay too soon for (A) to be performing, he simply doesn’t know that much yet.  But after speaking to Andrew we decided to do it.  NOT because the school makes money off of participants and/or the families that watch them, the performance and the tickets to attend are FREE.

Recital Prep 3

What about his skill level?  Could he possibly play at such an early stage?  Yep.  Andrew encouraged him to so that he could get used to performing in front of people.  THEN HE LET HIM HAVE INPUT IN HIS PIECE!!!!  He asked about songs that (A) likes to listen to.  He mentioned one and Andrew said it was a perfect fit.  The only problem is that its SUPER repetitive and could get boring if it was just the drum part….. So what did Andrew do?  He composed three similar parts that fit the song perfectly, but will provide the audience with the change that they will be craving during the piece.  It teaches (A) some super valuable lessons about playing as well.  He is to practice all three lines along with the music and without in addition to his other “homework” each week.

Recital Prep 1

Andrew always makes lessons fun, (A) looks forward to them weekly, never complaining that he wants to stay home.  He practices nightly and loves calling us in to show us what he can do.  It also helps him to get out some of his energy in the evenings.  Needing to concentrate so hard on the music and movements plus keeping time exhausts him.  I can see his passion for music and for playing developing every day.  Its exactly what Andrew said was going to happen.  He said he wanted to nurture that love of music and turn it into passion for playing.  He certainly has.

Recital prep2

(A) is beyond excited he can’t wait to show everyone what he can do at their concert.  The family has been notified and we are all ready to attend.  It’s going to be a BLAST!!

A Classic Rockland Party- Jills Ceramics

Posted on November 6, 2017 by RocklandNYMom Posted in Birthdays, Classes, Crafts, Events, Out and about..., Party, Reviews, RNYM Events, Uncategorized .

If you grew up in Rockland County any time in the recent future you have been to at least one birthday party at Jills Ceramics.  Jill is an icon.  Her studio across from Germonds pool has been there as long as I can remember, and I was so glad when my son was 3 months old to find that she was still there.  That’s the first time I took (A) to paint something.  He made a turkey plate using his hand and i’ve treasured it for 7 years.

When (E) was born and I created RNYM I just knew I needed to work with Jill.  After all- shes an under rated creative and amazing activity for both kids AND adults!  Luckily Jill thought we were a good match and came on board.  Three years later here we are.  RNYM does several events a year with Jill and she is listed in both our classes and party directories.

This past month we had our first of several upcoming events “Halloween at Jills” which was reserved for an amazing 60 people- looks like we aren’t the only ones who LOVE Jills Ceramics.

IMG_6126

When you show up Jill is all ready to go- with paint, smocks, brushes, and water all set up.  Children are then able to walk around (with parents if super young) to choose a piece to paint.  They can paint alone, with you, or you can have Jill help you (if you need  a handprint turkey for instance).  There are two different kinds of paint to choose from, the one that will be ready to go that day, or the glaze that needs to be kiln baked and picked up at a later date.

IMG_6141

There are plenty of different pieces to choose from, its actually pretty hard to choose.  As I walked around photographing different options, I was silently planning my projects and those for the kids at our upcoming events.  I was sooooo excited.

IMG_6142

IMG_6144

At this event once complete Jill had a little goody bag ready for each child participant <3 it was so super fun.  (E) was super proud of her work (as am I) and I look forward to displaying it at Halloween time for years to come.

jills goody bag

Jill not only does events like ours, she has open hours weekly, does FABULOUS birthday parties, and ADULT BYOB events, one of which we will he hosting soon (cause seriously? who wouldn’t want some wine and some painting?).

Jills Hours

To contact Jill you can call her at:  (845) 623-4975  Or just stop by the studio during her open hours.  As always we appreciate that you let her know that you heard about her here <3  Our next event (already 1/3 full) is on 11/18 from 12-3 and we love to have people come and keep us company!!  To RSVP either post in the FB event or Send us an email at RocklandNYMom@ yahoo.com.  Happy Painting!!!

Something to Wear- 5 Gift Challenge

Posted on November 2, 2017 by RocklandNYMom Posted in Christmas 2017, Thoughts.., Uncategorized .

Disclosure:  This is an unsponsored post- All opinions expressed are my own.  Some of the links included are affiliate links.

The first of the 5 Gift Challenge that I wanted to tackle was the something to wear.  For my little fashonista (E) I knew this would be pretty easy.  She loves clothes, and feeling pretty.  For my big guy I knew it would be more of a challenge- he doesn’t really care for clothing, doesn’t get excited about it.

To complete any of the 5 gifts requires you to really start to pay attention to patterns. What are they wearing?  What are they playing with?  What do they enjoy?  This has become fun for me to try to do.. You know what else?  A super happy side effect has occurred. In the past I would do the bulk of the Christmas Shopping alone, and RNYD would pick up a few little things (stuff for me and then something for each kid).  This week after I explained the plan and we decided to go ahead with it, we actually SAT AND DISCUSSED the gifts together.  Decided what was a good idea and what was a bad idea.  We made purchases together and it felt good.

Here’s what we chose:

Little (E), who is 4, adores her “baby dolls” AND she adores clothing.  We decided to go ahead and purchase some “dollie and me” outfits for her.  She is getting a pajama set and an every day outfit.  See the ones we chose below:

Dollie and me outfit

If you are interested in purchasing you can either CLICK HERE or click on the image above.

Dollie and me pajamas

(A), who is 7,  was more difficult.  He’s not really “in to” what he wears.  Hes concientous don’t get me wrong, but for the most part, what I buy him he will wear.  I had to start paying attention to what he was choosing.  This was a great tactic.  This past summer he went to Lacrosse camp for the first time, and loved it. He plans to play this spring.  I noticed that he chooses to wear his Vilanova Lacrosse t-shirt very often.  So we decided to purchase him a Lacrosse outfit from another competitive college, Maryland.

Maryland Lacrosse shirt

If you are interested in purchasing you can either CLICK HERE or click the image above.

Maryland lacrosse shorts

If you are interested in purchasing you can either CLICK HERE or click the image above.

I was super worried at fist that little (E)’s “Something to Wear” was more expensive than (A)’s, and then we came to the realization that it was OK, because there are other areas of the challenge that (A) will be more “in to” that he may get a little extra from.  It will all even out in the end, AND since we are really thinking about the gifts and making them more meaningful, the money portion of it doesn’t matter, what matters is that they love and appreciate their 5 gifts.

Progress Report with Swim Like a Fish

swim-like-a-fish

This summer we took full advantage of the convenience of having swim lessons at home. I found the boys were more comfortable in their own space, which I truly believe contributed to their growth as swimmers over the past few months.

As a Mom of 3, I am always looking for ways to make life slightly less hectic.  Having Zach come to our home instead of packing the swim bag, and all the kids and the snacks into the car to get to swim class on time made a HUGE difference.

As the weather warmed up the is past spring and we opened the pool, the boys were so excited to have Zach come to their pool for swim lessons. The boys love swim class. They are always excited to go, and sad when the lesson was over. I always saw progress from week to week with each of them – gradually learning the basic strokes and breathing.  But that all changed when we started lessons at home.

IMG_4524

The progress was AMAZING! I could see huge differences within the one-hour lessons! I really believe having the boys comfortable in their own surroundings made a huge impact on their progress. They were confident, and seemed more willing to try new things. Zach is fantastic.  He is patient, and fun but is also firm on his expectations for the lessons.

IMG_4528

They began this summer each having a 30 minute lessons and continuing to learn the swim strokes. They finished the summer at one-hour lessons, DIVING and continuing to PERFECT technique. I am still in shock! Zach even talked to (S) about joining a swim team next year.

Check out S diving for the first time!

IMG_3921

Now that the pool is closed, we decided to take a small break to settle into the school year. But, the boys will be back in the pool this winter and little man will be starting mommy and me swim as well!  I can’t wait to see what this year brings!

Another note to keep in mind for summer:  Lifeguards for parties!
My family hosted 2 large family pool parties this summer with TONS of children. Naturally, we were nervous having so many children in the pool at once. I reached out to Stephanie ( who was on vacation at the time!) hoping she could help. Within minutes she called me back and we were set! Catherine was WONDERFUL! She was very professional, focused on the pool and didn’t hesitate to step in if the kids were rough housing etc.  Catherine even got in the pool to play with the younger kids. Such a relief knowing there were extra eyes!

Getting there & Parking: Leaving from Nanuet, it took my family about 25 minutes to get to the theatre.  It was a straight jump onto the NY State Thruway, to the Saw Mill and a few turns and we were there.  Parking was so easy as well, since the theatre has its own parking lot.  Super convenient, especially with 2 anxious girls that were so excited about dinner and a show, there were no “are we there yet”.

Menue meal  dessert

Dinner: WOW – the choices where amazing.  We were able to choose from seafood, chicken, pork, prime rib and even a vegetarian option.  If you have picky little eaters, they have a kids menu available as well. When you sit, you are served a side salad to start, with a little corn muffin and roll.  Your waitress/waiter then comes by to see if you want drinks or any other types of appetizers (these are at an extra cost).  We stayed with the menu they gave us. I chose the Chicken Saltimbocca, with a baked potato and veggies. The meal was cooked to perfection, with no complaints from me.  Both my girls chose the Chicken Piccata, and said it was “super yummy mommy, can you make this one night” (1 chose to have 2 baked potatoes, and the other a baked potato and rice pilaf).  My husbands choice was the Prime Rib.  I was super worried that when he asked for it medium, since many places have a hard time making a prime rib to perfection, but once again the chef did not disappoint.  It was perfectly pink and my husband even mentioned that it was probably one of the best pieces of meat he has had (going out to diner).  Dessert was just as delicious.  They have an extra menu that you can purchase from, but we were happy with what the chef prepared.  Vanilla ice-cream over a ½ a peach, raspberry syrup, whip cream and a cookie.  When we stepped out at half time to stretch our legs, we saw some of the other desserts (and sadly regret not trying one of the other options as a bonus dessert). We also had some coffee and tea.

The Show:  The show was great.  Annie Get Your Gun is a play about crack shot Annie Oakley.  Annie (Devon Perry) is a quick witted, sharpshooter that wills her very first shooting competition against “the best shooter around” Frank Butler (Adam Kemmerer).  While they travel throughout the US, Annie and Frank form a bond and start to fall for each other.  But as stubborn as Frank and Annie are, they end up going in different directions.  Annie with Wild Bill and his show, and Frank with Pawnee Bill’s show.  Finally after months apart, they are back in the same City (New York City) when Sitting Bull, helps Annie realize how to win the man of her dreams heart back – by letting him win the competition.

The show was great for men and woman alike, as well as kids. It touches on friendly competition between a man and a woman, some action with the shooting competitions, and some romance.  The voices of Annie & Frank were amazing.  The notes that they hit and the range was simply impressive. The ensemble was just as amazing as the main characters with the dancing and singing and kept my girls entertained for sure.
