I’ve said it before, I will say it again, Dinner Theater NEEDS to become popular again!!!  Chelsea and I went and saw this show last week and were floored by how few of our peers were there.  Its AFFORDABLE, its DELICIOUS, and its ENTERTAINING!!!  Its close to Rockland and a GREAT date night, and based on what I see for upcoming performances, also a great way to introduce kids to the stage.

So…. Here’s the info on the current performance, please remember that there is a discount if you mention RocklandNYMom when you call to order tickets!

Chelsea and I enjoyed the show, in particular the dancing was REALLY out of this world.

ALSO I ALMOST FORGOT- RIGHT NOW IS THEIR AMAZING CHRISTMAS IN JULY SALE!!!

Safety First- Then FUN!!!

Posted on July 12, 2018 by RocklandNYMom Posted in Camps, Reviews .

Disclosure:  This is a sponsored post.  All opinions expressed are my own.

The kids have started their summer of fun at Day Camp in the Park!  Although I miss them terribly during the day (well, I’m getting a lot of organizing done at home), they come home happy and healthy and tired.  One of the things that I love is that the kids get to swim at least two times a day.  Once at instructional swim, and the other at free swim.  They are also exposed to things that not all camps can provide, like swimming in an ACTUAL LAKE.  I think everyone should.  During these swim times they alternate between the pool and the lake, and free swim presents itself with a choice for campers.  I have to tell you, if you’ve seen the blow up floats in the lake I feel like its a NO BRAINER.  It’s Lake EVERY TIME, just to climb and jump and play!  Well, once you pass the deep water test that is.

Once campers have proven themselves to be mostly proficient at swim, they can have a chance to pass the deep water test, because well, you can’t have blow up float fun until they know you are going to be safe.  At newly 8 (A) is ready to give it a try.  He wants to swim out in the open lake near the fun, but needs to get past that test.  I was NOT worried in the least because he has been learning to swim with the Condors for 3 years, in fact, this year he was promoted and began swimming with the pre-team.

There was one issue.  Someone told (A) who is a worrier, that there are barracudas in the water.  He told us Wednesday night.  He wanted to take and pass the test but didn’t want to go in the open lake because he was scared.  After trying to convince us that he could pass it but in the pool we had to figure something out.  Andrew to the rescue.

Andrew is the head lifeguard at DCITP.  He’s a professional in every way, and on top of that he’s nice, and a big tough burly guy.  The type of guy that the kids really look up to.  Instead of acting like (A) was wasting his time, or being impatient, he understood his fear, and really stepped it up.  He went WAY above and beyond.  He worked through the fear slowly, at a pace that (A) could handle, and ultimately got him into the lake, and passing his deep water simulation.

IMG_7944

At no time did Andrew try to force (A) into the water, or guilt him or anything.  He simply would do something like say, well what if we dipped our feet in?  What if we got on the first rung of the ladder?  Maybe lets take a dunk together?

IMG_7945

All the while he occupied my little man with conversation, competition and encouragement convincing him that the water was barracuda free.  He spent nearly an HOUR getting there.  Not only did he have him get in slowly at his own pace, but he got in the water WITH HIM to prove that all was OK.  Know who else was there?  Another one of his counselors AND a JC.  All cheering him on.

IMG_7948

After swimming several laps and treading water for a decent amount of time, Andrew informed (A) that he had just completed all the necessary parts of the deep water test with one exception.  While swimming his first lap, he stopped at the ladders along the way (that’s when he was acclimating him to the water, the next laps were without stopping, which is the requirement).  For the REAL test he would have to do the laps without stopping at the ladders.  BUT, Andrew made sure to remind (A) several times that he could do it, because he had just done it.  In fact, as he was swimming Andrew and (A)’s counselors were complementing how well he swam (thank you CONDORS).

IMG_7949

(A) didn’t want to get out of the Lake (go figure) when it was time and was asking when he could take the actual test.  The idea of the afternoon swim was thrown around but Andrew let him know that he could not be in the water with him at that time because he would have other groups that he needed to keep eyes on. That’s when Andrew really shocked me.  He offered to come down with (A) during his FREE PERIOD tomorrow to give the test and be in the water with him.  (A) was so super excited by the offer and accepted.

(A) was psyched the day of the test.  He asked if he could first go into the crib and get used to the water and they obliged.  He was one of several campers to be testing at this time (no more than 2 went at a time). IMG_8151

When it was his turn his counselor Jessie went in with him just to make him comfortable.  I am so happy and proud to report that he nailed it!!!

IMG_8159

The whole time I was so super nervous (he wasn’t).  Andrew was so happy for him that he even let him catch a ride in on the teeter totter.  He came home from camp yesterday and told me that he already went to the lake for free swim to play on the blow up water park, and that his next project is getting up the nerve to climb the giant iceburg. :o)

IMG_8180

The kids are loving camp so much that I offered to pick them up half day today for that build a bear lunacy and they declined.  THAT SAYS IT ALL.  We love Day Camp in the Park.

Fly Away…

(A) continues to love his drum lessons at The New City School of Music.  I recently told you all about his fabulous experience in earning his first TROPHY at his 6 month test.  Shortly there after came his June Performance.  Just as in the past he and Andrew worked to pick the right song to work on.  (A) made a list of 5-6 songs that he was interested in with RNYD, and then brought them in.  He and Andrew went over them and made his choice.

(A) really knocked his last performance out of the park.  He was a really new music student at that time, only 3 months in.  He played “We Will Rock You” and had a little trouble playing along with the music but kept great time.  We chalked that up to nerves, and he really really did well for such an inexperienced kid.  We were so much more than pleased, it was fabulous.

Andrew and (A) worked tirelessly to come up with “fills” to change things up throughout the new song, a new challenge since his previous number was a constant rhythm.  He also worked on playing along in time with the song, if he ever fell off track, finding his way back on his own.  This was a BIG step for him as a player.

Going into the performance, he knew he was ready.  Andrew helped him to feel super confident and we couldn’t wait to see his progress.  Well, we were impressed the first time this time we were blown away.  You would NEVER have thought he was a 7 year old child who had only been playing for 7 months.  He was professional and got through the whole song with no bumps.

IMG_7377

He looked calm and the most fabulous thing happened.  Andrew who we know loves what he does, and does it so well, who is so positive with (A), did the most amazing thing.  He rocked during (A)’s performance.  We happened to catch it on video and on film (to see the film check out our YouTube Channel), but he was really enjoying it, and having fun.  We thought we were proud, but man could you see the pride on his face.

Andrew is a shining example of all that is wonderful about The New City School of Music.  They are true professionals.  Their concerts are well organized, and pleasurable.  All the teachers are lovely and stop to smile.  The office staff accommodating and personable.  They welcome their students, have a lovely waiting room where siblings can color or watch a show while we wait.  They are so organized its unbelievable (like how they gave us a binder that had their whole year of classes laid out when we first registered).  I deal with a LOT of businesses and they blow me away constantly.

music school schedule

In fact, in June I received a communication that I was super surprised to receive.  The school recognizes that people go on vacation and are very busy over the summer, at the same time, they know that continuing with your studies is EXTREMELY important.  They sent out a schedule for makeups to be sure that all students could find a way to keep their lessons up during this crazy time.  It was because of this newsletter that I realized we couldn’t keep our regular lesson time because the kids don’t get off the bus from camp in time, so we were able to shift it to make it work.  I am very thankful that we did, it works out perfectly, and will also be great this fall.

The New City School of Music’s current promotion is sign up for summer music lessons and get your $55 Registration fee for FREE.  Which Expires 8/1/2018  As always if you give a call we appreciate if you let them know you heard about it here!!!

Check out our YouTube Channel and see the progress (A) has made from December to June just by watching his performances!! https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC3YqYL1SNZY88Koz5QlI_Ow

Took my own Advice

Posted on June 27, 2018 by RocklandNYMom Posted in Photo Obsessed, Photography, Reviews, Uncategorized .

BEFORE VIEWING- AFTER SESSION

Jennifer is a fabulous photographer.  We all know that.  She has photographed my children numerous times over the years and they are all darling.  Most recently she did a “Be You” session with my kids and it was just so much more than I could have ever imagined. Quickly approaching was (A)’s First Holy Communion, and we knew that we would want professional photos done.  At 8, (A) is now formulating his own opinions about things so we let him choose who would photograph him.  He picked Jennifer.

It seems that everything that could get in the way of these photos did.  The weather has been less than cooperative as of late, so even though he made his communion on 5/12 he had his photos done  5/24.  Jennifer wanted to wait for good weather (us too because we wanted outdoors) so we did.  I AM SO GLAD WE DID.   I was feeling less than myself at work, so in between meetings I ran down to CITIMD to find that I have Strep.  I did NOT want to miss our photos.  So I went home after work and took my first antibiotic, a quick nap, and got up to get (A) ready. I didn’t want to miss the amazing weather.

Jennifer picked the perfect spot.  We met just before sunset and the session started.  I’m blown away and I haven’t even seen them yet.  She quickly showed me a few screen shots on the camera as I stood there, and then one was on her Instagram timeline later that night.  To say I am waiting patiently would be a lie.  I am DYING.

My first teaser from Jennifer-

Aiden Comm-Watermark-1

They looked so amazing and I know that they are going to be even more than I expected.  I am already planning on arming myself with some tissues for the viewing.

Something I have to prepare for- I took my own advice.  (A) had a specific idea in mind for a photo or two that he asked for on the little dock.  He went but was nervous at the end of it and wanted me to go with him “to make sure it was safe”.  I want to re-explain- I have STREP, I was dressed like a bum, my hair in a ponytail.  I went with him to check it out and we had a moment.  Next thing I know, Jennifer is snapping away.  I tried to ask her to stop (nicely and please know that she wasn’t pushy at all, if you know her you know that she isn’t like that).  But she told me it was fine, that I was going to want it.  So you know what?  I let her, I took the photo, sick as a dog, in a tie dye t-shirt, running shorts and crocs.

FAST FORWARD TO VIEWING

HOLY CRAP! Jennifer showed me the video and I balled.  My little man looked so handsome, so grown up.  I’ve cried at the beauty of photos before, but these, were perfection.  Exactly what we were looking for.  Less formal than many, so much of his personality came through.  A great variety to choose from.

Formal:  The photos that commemorate the milestone that his communion represents.

Aiden Comm-Watermark-3

Aiden Comm-Watermark-7

Aiden Comm-Watermark-5

Informal: Those that show more of who he is, silly faces, showing off his belt and tie that he picked out himself.

Aiden Comm-Watermark-15

Aiden Comm-Watermark-11

His Ideas:  When we got there he told Jennifer that he had some special ideas of his own for photos.  Even posed himself.

Aiden Comm-Watermark-17

Aiden Comm-Watermark-19

Aiden Comm-Watermark-21

Which leads me to the final photos- which are hard to share, cause I wasn’t ready.  Not camera ready, not in the least.  I was completely out of my comfort zone, completely sick, but my little man asked me to.  Able to allow it because I trust Jennifer to make sure she gets whats really important, our relationship, which actually has nothing to do with how I look.  Maybe like me you can look past my crocs (OMG was I really wearing those?), and my mom bun, or the tie dye shirt my brother bought me with my maiden name on it.  Instead see what I now see.  A mom and her little man, a moment caught in time, and at peace together.  A testament to what we do as parents for our kids, sick, messy or otherwise.

Aiden Comm-Watermark-25

The truth is, he won’t remember made up Momma, cause that’s not what I look like all the time.  This, is more like the real laundry doing, computer typing, dinner making, child loving mommy.  These made me cringe when I first saw them, but now they make me so proud.  The more I look at them, the more I love them.  Thank you Jennifer, you were so so right.

These photos are one reason that we stand behind the photographers on our site.  I’ve worked with them all, and trust them.  They have been working with us for YEARS. We don’t recommend anyone that we haven’t worked with <3

Day Camp in the Park Celebrates 40th Summer

Posted on June 26, 2018 by RocklandNYMom Posted in Camps, Reviews, Uncategorized .

Disclosure:  This is a sponsored post.  All opinions expressed are my own.

As my kids climbed on the bus this morning all I could think of was the great fun that they would be having the next 8 weeks.  They have done nothing but talk about camp all year (seriously, RNYD outlawed the name a la Voldermort at the dinner table).  Here we are at day 1.  Then I started thinking about all the other children who would be beginning one of the best summers of their lives.  Then I thought about how fortunate we have all been that Day Camp in the Park is celebrating their 40TH summer this year.  How many lucky people can recall the amazing times that they have had at DCITP.

IMG_7832

Day Camp in the Park can boast that it has been part of the Palisades Camp Association, longer than any camp in the history of Harriman. They have been serving children of my students from the Clarkstown School District, in which Ken the director of camp, is a member of the Clarkstown School District Educational Hall of Fame. In addition, DCITP has received numerous awards from the National American Camp Association, including a lifetime achievement award for serving families throughout the world, writing the only master’s program for camp administration, and has written a book entitled, There is No Place Like Camp, guiding parents as to how to pick a worthy camp for their children.
IMG_7666
As per usual, I followed the bus up and took first day of camp photos of all the campers for the 2018 season.  Take a look at the lucky campers who will be experiencing all that DCITP has to offer this year on our facebook page- or on the DCITP Website <3

Dear Dads… You’re Welcome

Posted on May 8, 2018 by RocklandNYMom Posted in Opportunities, Party, RNYM's Picks, Uncategorized .

Disclosure:  This is a sponsored post.

Ok, so, this weekend is Mother’s Day.  I know, I know, it came on so fast.  We at RocklandNYMom really value our parents (grandparents, caregivers), and know how much you put into everything that you do and so first of all, please accept our greatest PRAISE, and THANK YOU!  YOU GUYS ROCK!!!

That being said- I polled the Moms on our page to see what they really wanted for Mother’s Day, then went out and attempted to make it happen with some AMAZING giveaways that we are doing this week.  I am NOT able to provide for everyone but we do have 5 fabulous days of fun.  What do I have for you?  The list of items that were most requested by Moms, and where you can find them.  You’re welcome.

Surprise, surprise, Moms want to be PAMPERED.  I think I can speak for most parents in general, when I say that when it comes to doing something special for ourselves, we hesitate, but today we speak specifically about moms (so Dads no offense we will get to you next month).  So Moms asked for things that they should be doing for themselves (when possible) but are afraid to ask for:

  1. To have their nails done
This one I don’t actually have a recommendation for, there are SO many.  But I would love to be able to go monthly, with no GUILT to do this, especially with the warm weather coming, pedicures are a must.
  2. To get their hair highlighted (dyed) and cut.
I am actually giving one hair gift certificate away this week to Hair by Andrea www.hairbyandreanyack.com as well as an adorable tote, and a hair straightener.
Hair by andrea 2Not only can you make an appointment to go in and see Andrea- but she has a special for new clients you may want to take advantage of for your gift $85 for a full head of highlights and a cut.  She also makes house calls.
    hair by andrea
  3. For a Massage
I don’t have one to give away this time, but word on the street is that you can contact two FABULOUS places to book one:
Nellie Grossenbacher- Who can be reached on Facebook or text (201) 523-3907The Wholeness Center- https://www.wholenesscenterny.com/ who also has some other fantastic pampering services like facials with Carrie ElAmir (my favorite)
    Facial Progress
wholeness center mothers day specials 2018
  4. A night away
Here’s something neat, Moms asked for one night away, in a hotel, even a STAYCATION.  Cool idea if you ask me, send her with a friend or leave the kids with grandparents and go together.  Some me/alone/couple time is ALWAYS a great idea.
  5. Someone to professionally clean the house
I do actually have one to give away this week.  Michelle of Dutchmen Cleaning who cleans my house has kindly offered to give a Momma a break and given us an all natural cleaning gift basket with a gift certificate to give away.
    dutchmen-cleaning-card
Not our lucky winner?  That’s ok, you can call and give Mom some time off by calling (845) 742- 9592 and mention us, Michelle will give you $10 of your cleaning.
  6. A night off of cooking
Luigi O’Gradys has just what you need to pamper mom and give her some time off, be it breakfast, brunch, lunch, or dinner Michelle and her staff can make anything happen (if you give them some lead time).  Give them a Call: (845) 735-9110 **MUST CALL BY FRIDAY**
    Luigis Logo
  7. Something witty
Our very first giveaway this week is from Shine Bright Co.  Its an ADORABLE gift bag with some super witty gifts inside.
Have a Mom or Grandma with a FABULOUS sense of humor?  Take a look and see what they’ve got!  https://shinebritecompany.com/Shine bright basket
  8. Professional Photos- Photos of Us
Moms are constantly taking photos, documenting EVERYTHING.  But we are TOO hesitant to jump in front of the camera. Also, it seems SO frivolous to ask for professional photos, but we would LOVE them.  We have a directory for that CLICK HERE.  Any of these talented photographers are ready and willing to document your special family moments.

In fact, two of them have donated gift certificates to pamper Mommies this week.

  10. MAD MONEY
And I don’t mean cash.  Know why?  People give me cash or a check and then I go and do something RESPONSIBLE with it.  Mad money, Mommas wanted a gift certificate to a home store, or their favorite clothing store, or jewelery store.  Somewhere NOT RESPONSIBLE, but guilt free.  Then, give her the child free time to go and use it- want to really make an impression?  Ask her to see what she got, and then pretend you ADORE it ;o)Pick her Poison and go with it.
Does she love to DECORATE? Then we suggest- Homegoods, Or Kirklands
JEWELS more her thing? Bourghol Brothers in Congers
Living with a STYLE MAVEN (that means she likes clothes)? Macys- Lord and Taylor- Nordstrom- Runway on the Hudson- or Ann Taylor (or the Loft) will do the trick!

List your home with Sheri in the month of May, and she will donate 20% of her commission to the society.  Why this specific charity?  Sheri lost her sister to the horrid disease and wants to give back in her name, to try to find a cure for others, so that they don’t suffer the same fate.

Prefer to donate to another charity?  That’s great too!!! Just let Sheri know which one and she will donate the 20% to them instead!!! This is a great opportunity to sell your home and also make a great difference for your favorite charity!!!

To speak to Sheri give her a call at: 914-906-2900 and check our her current listings at: http://sohnrealestate.com/
