Sabrina’s Murals and the Nursery of my Dreams!

3rd baby, and finally the nursery of my dreams!

When I had my first son, we were living in a one bedroom apartment and I used an alcove as the nursery. When I was expecting my 2nd son we were living with my parents, so we used an extra room for his crib and dresser, never really making much of it. Now, as I am expecting my 3rd (and my last), I had the urge to have a ‘perfect’ nursery.  In doing so, my goal was to keep the baby room as budget friendly as possible. To accomplish this feat I planned to try to DIY, and recycle as much as I could.

Paint the room.

While my husband and I were debating on colors to paint the walls of the baby room, I stumbled upon posts from Sabrina’s Murals on Facebook. WOW. I was instantly in love with her work! So naturally, I jumped on Pinterest for ideas. I sent Sabrina a message and set up a time for her to come see the room and talk out ideas.

Sabrina is the sweetest, a total breeze to work with, she is always smiling! I explained loosely with some ideas I found online that I was looking to do trees, stars, and a moon – like a forest scene. She was very honest about design concepts, color schemes and how to make it work in the room.   Since the room is small, and the design I wanted was complicated, we decided only to do a small portion of the room to not over do it.

Her ideas were so spot on, I couldn’t resist booking her!

A few weeks later, she emailed me a sketch of the mural and I melted! It was exactly what we had discussed.  She arrived the next morning at 9am. Sabrina told me to come in through out the day to see the progress, but I wanted to wait for the big reveal! She finished around 4:30pm – seems like a long day to have someone in your house – but I honestly didn’t even know she was there!

The mural is PERFECT! I am so in love with the colors – exactly what I wanted. And the peaceful ambiance it brings to the room – is also exactly what I wanted. She even offered to come back after we had the baby and paint the babies name on the wall.

I find myself just sitting in the nursery when I need a few minutes of peace from the crazy chaos. I just love it.

Alphabet Frame

RNYM has this adorable alphabet on the wall in her playroom that I just love! (http://rocklandnymom.com/category/playroom-project/) So again I found myself on Pinterest working off this idea and found an idea for an alphabet that I thought would work. I ordered the wooden letters off of Etsy (https://www.etsy.com/shop/TheMonogramCompanySE?ref=l2-shopheader-name – letters arrived quickly!) and Sabrina left me the paint samples of the teal colors from the mural so I was able to match the color of the letters to the trees in the mural.

IMG_5468

It was important to me to include the boys in the projects for the baby’s room to
help them feel included.  They loved picking the letters to paint – and we worked on letter recognition in the process.

I happened to have a large framed mirror lying around that was intended for a different project, but it was the perfect size to frame the letters. I matched the grey colors to the trees of the mural and painted the frame. I relaxed in the rocking chair and let hubby do the hanging – using small poster size command strips to hang the wooden letters.

Blanket Ladder
I love blanket ladders. So much easier than folding the hundreds of baby blankets you have, plus it doubles as decoration.

RNYM again to the rescue with a ladder she found on the side of the road. We (and by we I mean my wonderful Husband) sawed it in half, power washed, and sanded it down. I had left over paint from the walls and mural – easy! And it looks perfect in the room. Just by coincidence, the majority of my gender neutral blankets from my boys are teal and grey – perfect match.

Closet Organization
Since the room is a bit small, we decided not to buy a dresser/armoire. I had hanging shoe organizers, and found baskets at the dollar store that fit perfectly in the slots. Great for holding onesies, burp clothes, tiny baby socks.  The baskets even fit great on the changing table.

Sonogram Photos
Photobarn.com was having a special promotion on free wooden photo prints (they do this often so if you are a photo junkie go sign up), and I was looking for some more wall decor…I couldn’t resist!  I ordered 2, used my sonogram photos, and they look adorable!

The perfect gift from an amazing friend!
I knew she was up to something, she always is 😉 She had been asking me for a pair of jammies from when each of the boys were infants. I found a pair for each, that reminded me of when they were tiny and cuddly.

A few weeks later she surprised me with these amazing ELEPHANTS (which I happen to love)! This wonderful Etsy Shop – (https://www.etsy.com/listing/291624967/memory-elephant-handmade-elephant) took the boys jammies and sewed them into stuffed elephants!  Even embroidered their names on the feet. This gift could not be more perfect! Looking forward to having a matching one made for #3 as a keepsake.

Introducing- Kiddie Academy Northvale- Review

Posted on July 30, 2016 by RocklandNYMom Posted in Childcare/Pre-School, Out and about..., Reviews, Things to Do! .

As you may have seen last week Kiddie Academy Northvale joined our Daycare/Preschool directory.  We wanted to know more about this new school so little (E) and I headed right over to check it out.  Little (E) and I were given a tour and (E) got to spend the morning with the current campers.

Kiddie Academy Entrance

Right off the bat I was impressed with their security measures.  You can’t get in without being welcomed by an adult. Something that is so very necessary in this day and age.  Kiddie Academy is a top notch facility with large VERY CLEAN rooms that include child appropriate bathrooms,   an indoor play area for inclimate weather (too hot OR too cold) and an impressive outdoor play area (that I had no idea even existed).

Indoor Play Area

Kiddie Academy Indoor Play Area

IMG_0013

Kiddie Academy takes children ages 6 weeks  to 12 years.  It is considered an “educational daycare” as it follows curriculum for their students that covers all of the main educational areas (literacy, math, science, art, etc). As a teacher myself I am aware of all of the high risk testing these children are approaching and it is becoming more and more important that children are in an educational environment from a young age.  DESPITE the educational function, the children are still playing, they still get to be children.  There are lots of play centers, and much of the teaching that occurs is embedded in play, so the kids aren’t even aware that they are learning.

A snapshot of the curriculum books.

IMG_9979

IMG_0005

Kiddie Academy is well aware of the different abilities and levels of children in their age groups that they have a curriculum that they follow for EACH student individually- its completely differentiated to each learners needs.  In fact, if a child does not enjoy a particular subject or is not interested, they will often bring that skill or learning to an area where the child IS comfortable to help them through it.

On the day that we attended, the campers were learning how to make their own Pizza Dough.  This is a fabulous hands on activity that the kids really enjoyed.  The importance of following directions was discussed as well as proper cooking hygiene within the group.  Each ingredient was names as well as the measurements needed.  Then a student was able to help measure and poor each of the ingredients.  Once all the parts were added they had to mix them and each child had a turn to knead the dough with their clean hand.  As they touched it they described it. The kids were then cleaned up and got ready to go outside after learning that the dough needed time to rise.  So many learning standards were hit with this one activity- I was impressed.

It was a very hot day so the kids were having some wet play outside in their beautiful play area.  As the class waited for everyone to be ready to go, a teacher led them in some music and movement songs on the rug.

(E) did not get to participate in wet play as she is asthmatic and had just had an episode.  As per doctors orders she was not supposed to run around too much outdoors.  The staff of Kiddie academy took it in stride, assigning someone to play with her first outside for a few minutes in the shaded area with no running and then taking her inside to use play dough.

(E) hangs out in the play area- lots to do and see even if you aren’t allowed to run that day.

IMG_0015

When we were heading out the class was coming back in and changing to complete their pizzas and have their lunch.  (E) had a great time and was asking for when we would come back.  Everyone we met that day was told about Kiddie Academy.

Kiddie Academy has many opportunities for parents to take advantage of.  It runs school programs throughout the year and “camps” all summer long.  These camps change their theme weekly and special demonstrations or activities are planned within that theme.

kiddie academy camp august 2016

In addition to their school, and camps Kiddie Academy also has programs on weekends that are free to community members.  This coming Sunday the are having a special “Storytime Live” event with Curious George!

Storytime LIVE Kiddie Academy

Kiddie Academy is a great new option for parents when choosing childcare.  This place really has it all.  Children are happy, learning, having fun and safe in a state of the art facility.  For more information on their programs you can visit their website : http://educationaldaycare.kiddieacademy.com/academies/northvale Email: northvale@kiddieacademy.net or call: (201) 767-1120.

Duluc Auto Center- Review!

Posted on July 25, 2016 by RocklandNYMom Posted in Reviews, RNYM Savings!, Services .

Disclosure:  This is an usponsored post, sometimes you just gotta write.  All opinions expressed are my own.

I should start by saying I love my husband.  That being said, sometimes he puts things off until the very last moment, and then he is out of time.  The car maintenance is no exception.  He desperately needed an inspection but kept putting it off because he knew that he was going to need some other work as well.  Then there is the part where you have to juggle because we both work full time and need our vehicles.  The time for the car to be inspected was approaching rapidly.  I didn’t know where to go for quick and honest service, and was afraid that knowing the car needed some work that if I couldn’t trust the shop they would try to sell me services I didn’t need (yes this has happened before, luckily my husband knew better).

DULUC Auto LOGO

That’s when someone told me about Duluc Auto Center on 303.  I decided to give them a try and called Jeff to make an appointment. He was very accomodating as far as timing was concerned, completely understanding that we needed both cars for work.  RNYD went in the next day to have the car inspected and to find out what else Jeff determined to be necessary for the upkeep of the car.

Duluc Auto Center on Route 303 is one of 3 family owned shops in Rockland, they have been in business over 40 years.

IMG_9583

He called RNYD back  and let him know that we needed some break work done (apparently RNYD knew this prior to the appointment).  I was super nervous that it was going to be really expensive and that we wouldn’t be able to get the car back quickly enough for our insane lifestyle.  The car was completed by the end of the day.  We were able to pick it up immediately and it didn’t cost us an arm and a leg (his pricing was very reasonable).  It turns out that because we had just replaced the battery in the car, it actually failed inspection and we had to go back a few days later to have it re-run (you apparentley have to clock a few miles on a new battery before it will pass).  When Jeff was explaining that it failed he must have been able to see the terror on my face as he explained that we needed to drive it (legally with an inspection extension) for a few days and bring it back to be re-run.

Jeff was a pleasure to deal with throughout the entire transaction.  He was honest, curteous and timely.  Any questions I had he was able to answer with ease and compassion.  I was so impressed with his services that I HAD to write about him for everyone else to know about.  When I asked his permission to recount our interaction for the site he was happy to oblige.

Meet Jeff.

IMG_9582

Not only did Jeff agree to let me tell my story, he also offered all readers of RNYM a coupon to use if you need work done on your car and might be putting it off.  I enjoyed our encounter so much that when RNYD told me I needed new tires I knew just who I was going to call.  It turns out that he also just became an exclusive dealer for Hercules tires too.  He can still get you any kind of tire (if you have a preference), but I have no loyalty to a tire company- I just want safe, reliable, and a good value. Jeff understood my stance, and was happy to help me out.  He showed me the tires, and did have great pricing.  My appointment for tires is next week, and I look forward to it.

IMG_9587

To make an appointment with Jeff call 834-398-2009.  As always we appreciate it if you mention you heard about them here!  Oh yeah, you have to print the coupon and bring it in to redeem it.

Make it Personal- Selling your Home

Posted on July 18, 2016 by RocklandNYMom Posted in Reviews, Services .

Disclosure:  This s a sponsored post.  All opinions expressed are my own.

Selling your home is personal.  No matter what the reason you are leaving your special place (upgrade, downgrade, relocation, etc) you are allowing someone to speak for and sell your home.  THIS IS A BIG DECISION.  And let’s face it, there are so many choices that you can go with.  Many of the names you have seen for years, and seen EVERYWHERE!  Does that make them better?

SOHN Real Estate Banner

Another option is to go with a smaller, local, boutique agency.  Sohn Real Estate is one such agency.

Sheri (the owner) has been a SUCCESSFUL real estate broker in both New York and Florida for OVER 25 years.  While Sheri’s office can offer all of the bonuses of any larger real estate agency, she also offers one thing that others sometimes do not.  That personal touch.  Personal attention.  A smooth transaction that feels more like fun and family than a  transaction, it would be nice to have someone there that you can trust is working in your best interest.

Sohn Photo

Aside from the personal attention that you receive at Sheri’s Agency, here are a few more reasons it is important to look into a boutique agency like SOHN.

Benefits of smaller agency include (but are not limited to):

  • Flexibility in making a deal work
  • One on one personal support
  • Family atmosphere
  • Flexibility in method of Advertising (video, social media, print, fliers, and more)

Sheri recently helped me with my home as well.  My husband and I were trying to figure out what to do with our home since we had “outgrown” it.  Our family has grown and we are in need of another bedroom and bath.  She counseled me on what our house would be worth (these quotes are free of charge).  From there we took a look at other homes that might meet our criteria.

Unfortunately, we were not super impressed with what we had seen, and so we decided to look into making our current house work for us.  When we were worried that the changes we wanted to make might not be wise investments, she was able to help us to see what would and wouldn’t have a good ROI (return on investment).  It was great to have that perspective.

Sheri brings this same professionalism and vision to each home you look at– always with a critical eye making suggestions as to how to make it your dream home.  This same talent and vision helps her to sell your home.  As she shows your home to potential buyers she assesses their individualized needs and helps them to see how your home can be their dream home.

These are some of the reasons that Sheri has been so successful over the past 25 years.  A glance at her Facebook page https://www.facebook.com/SOHN-Real-Estate-302602943262111/ shows you some of her most current listings and sales.

To contact Sheri to list your home, receive a free valuation, or have her find your perfect home, you can message her through her facebook page, email: getitsoldwithsohn@aol.com or Phone: 845-639-HOME (4663).

Condors Launches Upgrade to Learn to Swim!

Posted on July 14, 2016 by RocklandNYMom Posted in Classes, Reviews .

Disclosure:  This is a sponsored post.  All opinions expressed are my own.

IMG_9590

As most of you know- little (A) has been swimming with the Condors for over a year now.  When he started he had a decent doggy paddle- and he has grown within the program to a place where I never worry about him in the water.  We go to friends’ houses to swim and he swims in the deep end like a champ (I should mention that thanks to the Condors he has been able to do this with ease since he turned 5).  I have received many compliments on his swimming abilities- and he really, truly loves the water (just ask anyone who has seen me tell him its time to get out).

IMG_9602

The learn to swim program has always been fabulous in my eyes- especially since I have watched (A) grow while attending.  This season Laurie and Ashley have brought to the table some more great tools to add to their arsenal.

The changes:

  • The swimming groups now have new names.  This may seem to be a small change but it has big effect.  The names are catchy, and easily understood by the kids.  The former “beginner 1” group is now named the “green guppies”. With these new names the swimmers know where they belong, they relate to their group.
  • The new names help the kids to see the hierarchy- I don’t know many 3 year olds that really know the difference between beginner and intermediate, but somehow they all know that they want to be a “Gold Great White Shark”.  It helps them to be self aware, and much like other systems (say the belt system in martial arts) they have something to strive for.  They can make goals like “move into the Blue Barracudas” and then feel accomplished when they reach that goal.
  • Parents also know where their children stand.  At the end of the session, if the instructors feel that your child can move on, a new bracelet is presented to them.  It makes registering easier (you don’t have to email and say is he intermediate 1 or 2?) you know based on their bracelet color.
  • Each swimmer gets a rubber bracelet with their group name and color- again much like the belt system, it gives them a sense of pride to wear it- collect them all as they become proficient and then excellent swimmers.

IMG_9591

  • The bleachers are also color coded with their group- and include a photo of their “Mascot”.  This helps them to know where to sit and wait for their lesson to begin.  That also helps Ashley to more efficiently get swimmers to their instructors since she doesn’t have to reference a list- she can go by color.

This new grouping system provides parents and swimmers with necessary feedback that is essential to development, while helping to make swim classes more efficient.  When paired with their award winning curriculum it leads to more and more success for the children enrolled in the classes.

I have been nothing but pleased with the program and cannot wait for (E) to start in the fall.  Laurie and Ashley also gave us the heads up that there are more great changes on the horizon and to keep an eye out!!!

The learn to swim program has gained great momentum and is VERY popular especially this time of year.  Sessions fill up quickly (remember they have a nice small instructor to swimmer ratio) so if you are interested hit up the website (click here) and register ASAP.  Remember there is a referral discount AND you get a discount if you are a Clarkstown Resident.

Attention to Detail- Jennifer Tesker Photography Review

Posted on July 5, 2016 by RocklandNYMom Posted in Photo Obsessed, Photography, Reviews, Uncategorized .

Disclosure:  This is a sponsored post.  All opinions expressed are my own.

RNYM really prides itself in having the BEST photographers directory available.  We have the most talented photographers, and here’s why.

From the moment I saw Jennifer Tesker’s “spring mini” setup I knew I was in love.  It was so fresh and breezy.  So soft and innocent.

I see lots of great photos of my kids… I take a lot of photos… not all of them affect me the way that these did.  I cried during my viewing session.  This video was precious.  It really captured the essence of my children- individually- and with each other.

Here have a look…

I love to shoot with Jennifer because of her attention to detail and super professionalism (she is also a sweetheart).  She is METICULOUS, not only in her unbelievable photographs but in her business dealings as well.  Jennifer is a FULL-SERVICE photographer.

Jen loves her work, its evident when you enter her studio how proud she is of her images and the happiness she creates.

JTP Studio

Her booking process is streamlined, quick and easy.  She sends reminder emails to make sure you have the date, time and place all set.  She is happy to work with you on your clothing options (which always makes me so anxious, yep we went back and forth figuring out the right look).

When we came for the mini-session (mini sessions are 20 minutes in contrast to a full session which is longer) she was all set up with the most beautiful spring display.  The kids respond so well to her, always have.  I literally am able to walk away and not watch the process.  She asks them to re situate, and they comply, they want to please her (and then stay and play with her girls).  It took her only 15 minutes to snag the most amazing photos of my kids.

Within 24 hours she posted a “teaser” on Facebook for me to swoon over.  I was so impressed I changed my profile picture right then and there.

Bogart-Web-1

What follows is part of the process that the general public doesn’t get to see.  Lots of time I see people complain that photos are “too expensive”, or that “anyone can take these kinds of pictures with a good camera.”  I’d like to take this opportunity to DEBUNK that.

When your photographer is finished taking the photographs they go home and weed through them.  Jennifer took over 125 photos during our session.  The result of her hard work was the best 15 images.  Not only are they the best images, but Jen also had to edit them to perfect them.  She does this in PAINSTAKING DETAIL.  For instance, little (E) has great hair, with layered wisps and fabulous curls- but they end up in her face OFTEN.  In our perfect photos too.  Jen spends HOURS editing to  remove fly-aways so you can focus on the beauty that is the photo.

JTP- Emmie before and afterOnce she is done obsessing over these images, she gives options, she turns them into black and white so that you can see how it would look the other way.  Once she has completed all of this to HER SATISFACTION.  You get another email.

This email invites you to attend a viewing session where you will see a personalized video of your images, and then discuss options as far as purchasing digital images, prints, and some other truly fabulous photo gifts.  I am slightly obsessed with the personalized photo box that holds your images.  The box is great quality and the photos inside are mounted and safe to handle, they are meant to be looked at OFTEN.

Jen offers these products both as Packages or “a la carte” where you can pick and choose the images/products that you would like.   This allows her to work with  any available budget.  When you purchase all the images you get a thumb drive with not only the images- but also the copy of your video.  She takes all types of payments, and can even do a payment plan where you receive your purchase when it is paid in full.  Since people often change their minds and come back to purchase more, Jen also holds on to your purchased images for 1 year and unpurchased for 3 months so you have time to come back.

Jen wants you to print your pictures and display them, not keep them locked on a thumb drive or cd.  This is one reason that she is a full service photographer.  In fact, so many of her clients are worried about getting the photos placed correctly that for a FULL session she will also help you to design your gallery wall (you have to see how she does that- but I can’t tell- its a secret).

The turn around for all of this is really very quick, especially when you take into consideration the amount of time it takes to edit and prepare your presentation.  Jennifer is a true professional who loves her job.  She adores each and every client that she works with. She beams while showing you your images, and is even more excited when you return for your next session, so that she can document your families growth year to year.

JENNIFER HAS JUST ANNOUNCED HER AMAZING SUMMER SESSIONS!!! HOW CUE ARE THESE???

My boys LOVE books. Since they were babies we have encouraged reading and we make story time a priority each day.  Most of the parents I know do….

Originally I thought of these as great additions to our routine, but after having them I thought about all of the other possibilities, gifts, commemorations.. the possibilities are endless!!

It took me forever to decide which books I wanted to get for the boys. There are many options that they would love!  Naming just a few – dinosaurs, fire trucks, race cars… oh my!  (see here for more options).  In fact, you can choose from picture books or board books (which fare a bit better in my house).

W is very excited for the upcoming arrival his new sibling, so I thought a perfect book for him would be “On the Day You Were Born.” And for my boat captain in training “Pirate Adventure”.

For each personalized book iSeeMe asks for information about your child. Name, Birthday, hair color, etc.  This information differs from book to book.  You can also choose a special dedication, and include a picture to place in the front.

W and S were so excited when they opened the box and saw their names on the cover of the books. “Mommy! Those are my letters!”  As they began to flip through the pages they both broke out into the silliest giggles as they saw their picture on the dedication page.

“On the Day You were Born” is a very sweet book about the excitement and joy around the world when a baby is born. It talks about the wonders of the earth, with a detailed glossary at the end explaining gravity, tides, and migration. Perfect for my little scientist who needs to know how everything works.

“Pirate Adventure” was super cute.  All about a pirates daily chores (yes they have chores too, a great family conversation), and their constant quest to find treasure, of course! Within the book they placed his name, our town, and our last name.
S laughed every time he heard the pirate being called the same name.

As we read through the book they would get excited as I turned each page waiting to hear their names again, and to find their “letters.”

In no time at all, both books have become a nightly addition to our bedtime routine. The boys request them nightly and  refer to them as “My Book”.  When I can’t find W or S, and things get quiet (usually time for panic)  I have now found them reading their books quietly in their rooms.

iSeeMe books has titles that would be great for pretty much any occasion including: new babies, baptisms, birthdays, back to school, adoption, you name it! I will definitely be purchasing one when Baby #3 arrives!
