Long before the underground tunnels of the subway opened, elevated railway lines rose above the busy streets of New York City, offering commuters a swift travel alternative to the traffic below. Though many of the elevated railways are gone, the construction of these lines in the 1870s established the business and residential neighborhoods that define the City today.
