Socially Safe Santa

Posted on October 27, 2020 by RocklandNYMom Posted in Christmas 2020, Photo Obsessed, RNYM's Picks, Things to Do!, Uncategorized .

You probably already saw, but our directory member photographers all just put out their Holiday Mini Sessions (See our directory for info).  What’s really new is that in addition to our usual photos, people mostly still flock to the mall or our annual Breakfast with Santa (still so sad its not happening- holding onto hope for Easter).

MACY’S has announced that for the first time in 160 years they will not have a Santa available for photos.  I am hearing that mall version may be very different (and really how socially safe can standing in line be there?)

Well, Jennifer Tesker Photography has a solution for you.  She is doing a ONE WEEKEND ONLY “Socially Safe Santa” mini session.  I know that for me, this is a breath of fresh air as I cannot take my kids to the mall, and I am going to get a professional, edited photo (which as you know I LOVE).  BOOK NOW!

Here’s the deets:

  • At Stokes Farm Greenhouse (climate controlled for warmth, large enough to be socially distant and safe)
  • 10 minute session (which is more than we get at the mall, LOL)
  • Includes 3 digital images (you can purchase more)
  • Includes up to 3 kids (more can be added for a fee)
  • NO contact with Santa
  • Separate entrance and exit
  • Disinfecting in between clients
  • Facemasks required before and after photos
  • Wait in car or outside in a warming area
  • Hand Sanitizer on Premises

Sessions are super limited, so be sure to book ASAP.  I know I already have <3  Here’s the link: https://www.jenniferteskerphotography.com/make-memories-with-santa

Take the Trip…

Posted on January 22, 2020 by RocklandNYMom Posted in Birthdays, Health and Wellness, Money Momma, Opportunities, Reviews, RNYM's Picks, Self Care, Services, Things to Do!, Thoughts.., Travel .

Disclosure:  This is a sponsored post.  All opinions expressed are my own.

A little while ago, I posted about how I am done giving gifts of “things” and am moving toward gifts of time and experience.  I am about to turn 40. I don’t only believe in time and experience for others, I do for myself too.  I’ve always dreamed of traveling, especially to Europe, but everywhere.  For one reason or another it just hasn’t happened.  Well with 40 knocking on my door I decided to do something about it.

EDIT TO ADD:  I wrote and was supposed to post this article early fall, but I am kind of glad that I didn’t.  Due to normal “Life” situations, I am more glad than ever that we got a chance to do Disney this year as well as to have taken this trip myself.  I do not know when the next time I will be able to take the family on a trip or go myself might be able to happen.  Those who know me know that I am not exaggerating, my new advice…..When you have the chance, Do it.  I intend to try to figure out how to continue to travel, and bring the family along, but its going to take a whole lot more work now.

Due to unforeseen circumstances RNYD was not available to travel (which is cool anyway cause he’s much more of a home body), so I begged my bestie Michelle to come with me.  I gave her a list of places on my bucket list and let her choose.  I also wanted to hit up a cruise if possible because I have never done one.  She was game, and she choose Greece.  Perfect for a cruise, and really one of my top two trips.

We picked a cruise and booked it, since it left and returned to Rome and neither of us knew when we would be back, we decided to take 2 days to explore there as well.

Here’s what I’ve learned.

  1.  I will never book a trip with a travel agent other than Scott Walters (sorry dudes say what you will, he’s bailed me out 2x now).
  2. Cruises are great because you don’t have to pack up your stuff every day to move, you have a home base.
  3. You can make friends on cruises, which is neat for when you are done sightseeing for the day you can meet for dinner/drinks/dancing later.
  4. Get the drink package (just saying)
  5. Try all the different foods
  6. Clarks are the best sandals ever (and yes you can find some that don’t look like your grandmothers shoes).
  7. Greece is REALLY HOT in the summer so May or September may be better.
  8. I AM OBSESSED WITH TRAVEL.

At each of the islands we went to Scott sent us 2-3 excursions that he thought we would like based on our “profiles” and we chose 1-2 for each.  The tours that we took were so complete that I actually don’t think we missed anything, BUT we didn’t have tons of time so it was more like a taste test, I may have a list of places that I’d like to get back to if I ever check off my list the other trips I want to take.

Travel Agent Extraordinaire Scott Walters helped  me out immensely on this trip, and I am so grateful.  I have just reached out to him again, about a possible trip for 2021, that I would like to start saving for.  I am so excited, and hopeful that we can make it happen despite our challenges.  He’s been super helpful in understanding and helping us with the physical needs of our family, and I am hoping that his expert advise will help us to be able to make the trip happen for our whole family.

A full service travel agent specializing in family vacations to amazing destinations. From simple weekend getaways to multi generational once in a lifetime bucket list filling journeys, Go Away Often Travel can get you there. It’s YOUR VACATION, let me do the work!  Worth noting here that I always thought I couldn’t afford a travel agent.  Turns out that you don’ t pay one, they are paid by the people they book your trip with.  The few times I have reached out to him to see if he should be consulted about a trip and he couldn’t help me with a deal, he encouraged me to book on my own to save the money.

Nickel-O Farms- Review! #RNYMBucketList

Posted on May 13, 2019 by RocklandNYMom Posted in Camps, Classes, Classes for Kids, Day Trips, Opportunities, Out and about..., Reviews, RNYM's Picks, Things to Do! .

Disclosure:  This is a sponsored post as Nickel-O Farms is a directory member.  All opinions expressed are my own.

Pleased to be checking items off of our #RNYMBucketList this early in the year, here is installment 1.  Horseback riding.  Its a great skill, one I loved as a kid at camp, and my brother even pursued.  So excited that I was able to share it with my kids, that they weren’t scared (actually LOVED it), found a great place to go, and look forward to going again.

RNYM recently had the pleasure to begin working with Nickel-O Farms. They have joined our camps directory, and became one of our spring/summer bucket list options as one thing my kiddos wanted to do was to learn how to ride a horse.  They always enjoy the “pony” rides at events we attend, but wanted something more.

Nickel-O has lessons, as well as scouting events, camp, and animals available for birthday parties. It is located right in West Nyack and Lisa (the owner) is more than sweet.

We headed over for a riding lesson with the kids and didn’t know what to expect. We had been told that long pants and boots or something with a hard sole would be best so that’s what we wore.  Safety is most important at Nickel-O so the first thing we did was get fitted for helmets.  Then we were brought over to Sara who introduced us to our horse for the day, Small Bear.

I thought that it would be a little lighter than it was but the kids were thrown right in (I’m glad) and (A) was taught how to walk Small Bear Bear right over to the stables. After a few pointers (A) was able to get right onto him.  I figured (having literally no background in riding other than the lessons we had at my sleep away camp when I was 10) that they would ride around a few times and they would get the hang of it but nope.  They did a ton!!!

After a few basic lessons on the reigns while going around the corral I was shocked that Sara started explaining to (A) how to steer Small Bear to do a zig zag through the cones. Without a lead line or anything!  It took him a few seconds to get the hang of it and he was doing it on his own!!!  I honestly would have been impressed if we stopped right there.  They had already blown my expectations away, but then Sara brought (A) and Small Bear into the adjoining corral.

There they worked on walking over obstacles, including cavaleties in the ground, and also a bridge. THEN THEY GOT TO JOG!  This was the highlight of the experience if you ask (A) or (E).  They LOVED it!!!

When ½ hour was up (A) was instructed how to get off Small Bear ‘like a cowboy’ and came out all smiles. At this time (E) was heading in for her lesson.  Being 5 I assumed it would be drastically different.  NOPE!  She did all the SAME things that (A) had done (but with a lead line held by Sara).  She too enjoyed every moment, and Sara told us at the end that for most kids her age they would have only started with 15 minutes, but that she did so well that she got to do the whole ½ hour.  When it was completed she was instructed how to walk Small Bear back to the cross ties and hook him up.

At this point Sara told them a bit about how to care for a horse, and about how riding lessons are about more than just the “riding” it’s also caring for the horse, and having a relationship with them where they trust you. You have to take care of them.  The kids got to brush him a bit, and were given a lesson on the difference between the grooming tools.

At this time I pulled the kids aside to ask them a few questions about the experience (it’s really cool that they are old enough to do that now). Both reported that they would LOVE to do it again, or go for a trail ride in the future.  They also reported that they LOVED jogging, and recommend that others try it.

Nickel-O was a fabulous experience for my guys. They wanted terribly to learn more about horseback riding, and to do more than be led around a pony area.  This was the second item we were able to cross off of our #RNYMBucketlist.  If you are interested in going for a ride, camp, lessons, a scouting event, birthday party or anything else, please contact Lisa Owens at:

Having some fun designing their own ponies

Pony Party at Sparkle Up was the recent special event, girls and boys were able to decorate their own pony. Also get their hair done, nails painted and face paint. At this event we also had a couple boys who enjoyed getting cool hair- sparkle tattoes- pony decorating and having fun!

Some very pretty and very handsome hair styles!

Painted nails and hair prep

At the end of the session we had a fun photo shoot where the kids got to show off their awesome hair styles and the pony they had decorated. Thanks to all the parents who let me capture the memories! I think these events are so fun because it is a day out and its really cool to see each Child’s personality through there hair style, and the activity that we do at the event. So for example it was really cool to see everyone’s creativity when they decorated their pony. What a fun day!

Local Theater Options

Posted on March 7, 2019 by Catherine Sheridan Posted in Out and about..., RNYM Events, RNYM's Picks, Things to Do!, Uncategorized .

Theater is a culture and art all over the world. Of course NY is the most famous all over the world known for their stunning Broadway shows. Unfortunately seeing shows in NYC comes with a big price tag. Local theater is a great way to have some fun, support the upcoming actors and actresses as well as supporting the community. What is great about local theater is well its accessibility, also you don’t have to pay a fortune to see a great show. There is tons of varieties of shows, as well as some that are kid friendly. It is a great time for families to spend time together and enjoy the art of theater. Here is a list of local theaters you can take advantage of!

WESTCHESTER BROADWAY THEATRE IS PROUD TO PRESENT – AIN’T MISBEHAVIN’

WESTCHESTER BROADWAY THEATRE IS PROUD TO PRESENT
Ain’t Misbehavin’

What can I say but WOW.  RocklandNYMom.com was invited for Press Night for this amazing show, and that’s all I can think of to say.  I took my mom, who had her very first experience with WBT a few months ago, and she was so excited to join me.   From walking into the show, being greeted at the front desk to our seats (which were amazing, not that they have a single bad seat in the house), we had a blast.

Lets start with the food.  The menu was mouth watering.  My mother and I had a hard time selecting our meals.  She has many dietary restrictions, and they were able to tweak the Broiled Fillet of Sole, leaving off the lemon butter sauce and she was super happy.  She said the fillet was moist and tasted wonderful (and didn’t think the sauce was needed).  I am a chicken eater, and the Chicken Marsala was very well done.  I was so happy with it – in fact had such a hard time finishing it with all the food they give you (a starter salad, with a roll and corn bread, our main dish followed with coffee and dessert).  But don’t you worry, I took my leftovers home for the next days lunch, and it did not disappoint then either.

You have the option to order extra appetizers, which we did not.  We did discuss the luxury desserts (which they serve during intermission), but mom was super happy with the dessert that was provided to us, and honestly I was so full – there was no room for anything else.  The couple sitting next to us had the French Onion Soup – so of course I had to ask about it, which I was told was amazing.  It will have to be added to my order during my next visit for sure.

Once we were done eating, and all settled in, the show began – promptly at 8pm, and it did not disappoint.  A great way to start off Black History Month.  The performers sang the entire show, since this is not your ordinary “show”, and engaged with the audience to make us laugh.  The chemistry amongst the performers was apparent, and the hard work that they put into the show left me breathless and wanting more.  I walked into the show knowing very little about what was going to happen, or what it was about, and left a HUGE fan.  You will want to sing along to the songs, tap your feet to the amazing beat, and jump up to dance (which is not aloud), but will have a blast.

If your looking for a show – that is not like the others.  Which takes a whole different approach – then you have a few weeks to see Ain’t Misbehavin’, and trust me when I say you will not be disappointed in anything that the WBT brings to you during your show experience.  Don’t forget to mention RocklandNYMom to get a discount – and let us know how your experience was.

Here’s a little background information. Also, stay tuned because we are trying to bring you a SPECIAL experience for their upcoming showings of Newsies which is RNYM’s favorite since she was a kid!!!

Ain’t Misbehavin’

Conceived by Richard Maltby, Jr. and Murray Horwitz
Musical Adaptations, Orchestrations & Arrangements by Luther Henderson
Directed by Richard Maltby Jr.
Music Direction by William Foster McDaniel

January 31 – February 24, 2019

Winner of the 1978 Tony Award for Best Musical. Thomas “Fats” Waller rose to international fame during the Golden Age of the Cotton Club and that jumpin’ new beat, swing music. The Harlem Renaissance of the 1920s and 1930s comes to life in the three-time Tony Award-winning musical revue, Ain’t Misbehavin’. Experience the heart and soul of Harlem where the onset of swing joined ranks with the rhythms of ragtime and the passions of jazz, creating an explosive musical movement.

Join five performers on a journey through the timeless music of Thomas “Fats” Waller. You’ll be jumpin’ and jivin’ with memorable songs such as “Honeysuckle Rose”, “Ain’t Misbehavin”, “Black and Blue”, “This Joint is Jumpin’” and “I’ve Got a Feeling I’m Falling.” One of the most popular, well-crafted revues of all time, the sometimes sassy, sometimes sultry, has moments of devastating beauty that is simply unforgettable.
Your toes will tap, your shoulders will jive, your head will bob along with some of the most infectious swing America has ever created, the music of Thomas “Fats” Waller and some others who shaped the feel of the 1920s, ’30s, and early ’40s. Halloween at Jills Ceramics!

Posted on September 16, 2018 by RocklandNYMom Posted in Classes, Crafts, Day Trips, Events, Out and about..., Party, Reviews, RNYM Events, Things to Do! .

We adore our adventures around town together.  One that we end up doing quite often is visiting Jill of Jill’s Caramics.  We’ve spent so much time there in fact that my kids hug and kiss her every time we go.  That’s Jill.  She adores kids.  She’s been celebrating birthdays and crafting with kids in Rockland County for over 30 years.

We celebrate almost every holiday there, and have been creating the handprint art I so love together since (A) was 1.  When we had two days off in the beginning of September and an event coming up for Halloween we thought it was the perfect time to pay Jill a visit. The kids were allowed to each paint one thing they chose, but then I had another little project in mind… no surprise there it was made with their handprints.

I love walking around and looking at all the items that Jill has to paint.  The possibilities are endless.  Although I knew what I wanted the handprints to be I wasn’t sure what piece I wanted to put it onto until I walked around a bit and looked around.  Then in the back I saw the perfect plates.

I brought them over to Jill and told her my idea.  She LOVED it.  She’s always willing to give a crazy idea of mine a try.  The kids got to paint the backgrounds.  I really like that we didn’t really section off the colors for them, so each is a little off, just the way the kids wanted it.

That’s when Jill got to work.  She painted their hands and helped each child place it on the plate.

Once that was complete Jill started adding the embellishments to each hand to turn them into their intended characters.

Finally we had Halloween plates with the handprints of my little monsters <3

Since we opted for the Glaze this time, we had to leave them and come back a week later; after they were baked in the kiln.  When I went to pick them up I was so excited.  They are absolutely perfect.  They fit right in my plate holder, and as always, they are beautiful.

I’m so looking forward to our next family projects.  The kids then painted a puppy and a battleship, and their Aunt Shannon made an adorable little pumpkin tea light holder.  Experiences like these are the reason why I am so excited to share with our readers, and to help organize events for everyone.

In fact, we have a family event on 10/20 with two sessions 10-12 and 1-3.  We prefer that you RSVP to these events so that we have enough space for everyone, and you don’t need to show up at the beginning of your session, people come and go throughout. You can paint anything you’d like, but we call it a Halloween event because Jill has lots of super fun themed pieces for the Holiday.  Price varies by size of piece, and fluctuates slightly if you choose to Glaze rather than craft paint. To RSVP and/or order a pumpkin please either post in the Facebook event or email Rocklandnymom@yahoo.com .

We also have a parents night out event scheduled for 10/24 from 7-9 where adults can come and paint any piece they would like.  Jill does make these super cool custom large pumpkins with light sets that we love though, so we are doing a special order for them.  They are $50 and must be ordered in advance so that she can make them (takes a week to make each one for us) in time for the event.  Due to the customized nature of the project its necessary that you pay us in advance for these pieces.  10 characters or less work best.  To RSVP and/or order a pumpkin please either post in the Facebook event or email Rocklandnymom@yahoo.com .

*As always, if you choose to go see Jill, we appreciate letting her know you heard it here. :o) *
