Climbing out of our Comfort Zone

Posted on December 11, 2023 by RocklandNYMom Posted in Birthdays, Classes, Classes for Kids, Day Trips, Day Trips, Health and Wellness, Out and about..., Party, Reviews, RNYM's Picks .

Disclaimer:  This is a sponsored post.  All opinions expressed are my own.

As a child, when we were driving somewhere and we would pass tall rock formations on the side of the road, I would daydream about climbing them.  I’ve always been a very physical person, I like to push my body’s limits, to try new things.  But I never got around to trying it.  I was super excited when we were invited to the climbzone to try it out, as was my action/adventure loving daughter.  My son, a true first child, was a bit more skeptical.

So we made an appointment to go try it out and wouldn’t you know, my daughter gets sick.  She was SOOOO bummed. Gotta love the cold and flu season.

We went on a Tuesday so that it wouldn’t be super crowded, and decided to make it a mother son date of sorts, we would grab some food afterwards and have an evening out.  It is easy to find in the food court and is slightly intimidating at first.

The staff was friendly and took the time to explain the safety measures to us first and foremost as they fit us with harnesses and went over the safety procedures.  They chatted with us about how long they had worked there, and about the ratings of the different climbing walls.  We decided that as a first time, we would stick to the 1-2’s.

BOY WERE WE NERVOUS!  Our first climbs were our lowest, as we cautiously learned the ropes.  Slowly during our time we began to challenge ourselves and then each other.  Eventually making it to the top of the tower of London, and scaling a dinosaur skeleton.  At the end one of the employees even suited up and climbed with us (it is not fair how effortlessly she was able to climb, just saying).

We had a BLAST.  Though A and I tend to be more cautious, we really got up there, and afterwards said we would definitely do it again.  Especially because E missed out, we will have to go back.

It was good though, because A is the harder sell on this one.  He loves the puzzle type places where you work to solve something, but is more skeptical of some of the adventurous ones.  When we went to dinner afterwards, I asked his honest opinion.  He said he loved it, would do it again, and wants to go when I bring E.

It’s a great activity for a fun birthday party, and I can see it being perfect for any scouts, as well as team building opportunities.  When I asked A if there was anything special that he wanted me to add to the review, he said to make sure that I mentioned multiple times how lovely the staff was.  They didn’t just do their job, they got to know him, laughed with him, challenged him to climb higher, and complemented his behavior.

It was a super good experience, I enjoyed watching A overcome some of his inhibitions and challenge himself physically and mentally.  I look forward to returning, and bringing with us the most fearless of the crew so that she can in turn challenge us to do even more.

As Always if you should choose to visit Climbzone after reading our review, please let them know you heard about them here <3

Kicking off Spring Break with a Time Mission Review!

Posted on April 2, 2023 by RocklandNYMom Posted in Birthdays, Day Trips, Party, Reviews, Things to Do! .

Disclosure:  This is a sponsored post.  All opinions expressed are my own.

My kids are now 9 adn 12.  We do a lot of different activities than we used to.  Our adventures are growing with us.  That’s one reason we were excited when Time Mission in the Palisades Mall reached out.  Admittedly we don’t spend a lot of time down at the mall, and hadn’t even heard that it had opened.  Checking out the website got us excited- even RNYD- who puts up with my antics- but is rarely excited about them.

What is Time Mission?  Geared toward kids 7+ and adults, it’s along the same lines as an escape room experience, except instead of one room to escape, there are up to 32 different rooms to solve, all like mini timed escape rooms.  They play to different strengths and different interests in each room.  You can go for an evening/afternoon of family fun, bigger kids can go to hang out, and they do birthday parties (which is awesome because its harder and harder to find places for the older kids who are FAR too mature for the same old places).

We decided it would be the perfect way to kick off Spring Break together, so we made reservations for Friday night.  Making reservations is easy, you simply go online to their Website and choose a day, time and whether you would like a 60 or 90 minute session.  The process is easy, and they had us all set when we showed up for our reservation.  There was no waiting online to choose and pay, we were right in.

After locking up your loose belongings, you are given a chipped bracelet to wear which is what unlocks each room.  Outside of each room is a graph that tells you what strengths this particular room plays on, and a brief description.  If you press the “i” there is information on how to solve the room, TRUST ME READ THE “i”.  There were a few that we had NO clue how to solve simply because we got so excited to go in we forgot to read first.  The good news is, you can go in again and try once you’ve calmed down and read the information- you just can’t stack the points. This wasn’t an issue for us, since the first time in we hadn’t scored any points.

Before we began, we walked around and read all the descriptions and scenarios.  We gravitated toward the rooms with higher mental abilities since we had two adults and two kids. They were more difficult than we anticipated.  We had greater success with the more physical rooms, the kids enjoyed them greatly, and we did as well.  We had so much fun (paired with some frustrations) that we ran out of time to do all of the rooms that we had planned to.

We were there an hour and a half, and there’s still plenty more to check out, plus the rooms that they are building.  We were glad to see on the leader board that we defeated the people who were there before us.  The staff was super friendly.  Which is a major plus, as that is not always the case.  At the end on your way out, they cut off your chips to recycle them (which is also great).

I asked the kids their thoughts at the end and they said, super fun, would go back, some was frustrating.  I like it though, if it was all too easy, you would get through all the rooms too quickly, and although you would feel like a genius, you wouldn’t have been challenged.

Time Mission is a great place for a Birthday Party, Class Trip, Team Building Outing, Family Outing, or just a Friends Afternoon.  It wasn’t crazy busy- was easy to find up near the food court and it was a different night out for us.  Especially when you are looking for something to do with the kids for a day, or on a cold, rainy day off.  My kids liked it, and I am certain that we’ll end up back here.  This is a great new addition to the local entertainment scene for kids.

The kids have asked me to add that their favorite rooms were the castle, the spy laser room, dystopian forest, paleontology discovery, and the planet ball one <3 in case you were looking for their favorites.

They also wanted me to add:

  • Wear comfortable clothing
  • Wear sneakers
  • Read the directions
  • Go out for your favorite treat afterwards <3

BASICally the Perfect INVITE!

Posted on April 25, 2021 by RocklandNYMom Posted in Birthdays, Events, Items, Party, Photo Obsessed, Reviews, RNYM Events, Rockland Babies, Services, Specialty Items, We're Having a Party .

Disclosure:  This is a sponsored post, all opinions expressed are my own.

I am a High School Teacher.  More specifically, a teacher of Senior students.  It stands to reason then that at this time of year (every year) I am very focused on Senior events.  All which culminate in the big event, graduation.

Last year the kids didn’t get much leeway in terms of celebrating.  This year, we are able to again have some gatherings, especially when outdoors, and distanced in some way.  Having just spent a year (give or take a few months) with so many restrictions, it’s no wonder that people may be doing things up a bit more than usual.

Well, it’s almost MAY and time to get planning.  I know that lots of people have made the switch to online invitation platforms, but I still LOVE a paper invitation.  In fact, if you follow me you know that I am VERY picky about my invitations.  I like them to usually be photograph invitations for that personal touch (also makes a nice memory), something you can really personalize (180 colors- and you can customize EACH element on the card).  In addition, I like the invite itself to be of sturdy card stock.  There is something about receiving a card or invitation in the mail, that is made of nice thick card stock.

So, as always I will share a favorite with you, and then explain why.  You need to check out Basic Invite.  Their invitations, announcements, photo graduation announcements etc are completely customizable. While looking around I found that they had some really cute nurse graduation announcement choices as well (quite a few of my students go into nursing)!  They are printed on sturdy card stock, attractive and fast, but there’s more.  There are 40 different color choices for envelopes (which are also peel and stick, thank goodness)- so your envelope can coordinate with your card!!

There are also these SUPER cool clear (we called them see-through) ones you can order!!!

Basic Invite has great customer service, and even a service where they ADDRESS the cards for you!  Don’t have time to upload them?  There’s also an address capturing service!!!  As a super busy working mom, this is HUGE!  This allows you  to share a link on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, or any other social media to request your friends and family’s addresses. The addresses are stored in your account and can be selected during the design process. Basic Invite offers recipient address printing at no cost on all card orders!!

Then ANY TIME you are sending cards (think parties, announcements, holidays) you can click on the people you want to send the correspondence to and BAM, Done. For me personally, this is AMAZING, it’s hard enough to find time to design all of these things let alone sit and write them all out.

My 5th grader is also “graduating” this year.  So it’s even more on my mind.  We may do a small family event to celebrate for him (think immediate family BBQ), since he is missing so much. Well, it stands to reason that I would need to look at invitations or a grad announcement.  I was able to find a few that I liked, customize them just the way that I wanted, and then order SAMPLES to see which I would like the best, yep that’s right custom samples!  Changing colors and fonts as well as the style or card was super easy, you do not have to be super computer savvy to do it.  I even let AJ customize one (can you guess which one?).  Uploading the photos was also easy as pie.  I was given an ETA of one week and they arrived as promised.  You may have watched me unveil them on our social media stories.  Excuse the cell phone photo, I couldn’t help myself… The quality is impeccable, in fact, we have decided to make my new nephews birth announcements with Basic Invite as well.  ANNNNNND, we may have fallen in love with this Birthday Invite…

Let’s get social!  If you want to see more Basic Invite check them out on their social media handles: Facebook –Pinterest –Instagram –Twitter!

I (of course) have a discount code for you too!! Right now Basic Invite is offering 15% off with coupon code: 15FF51

Communion Prep Begins! Saying “Yes” to the Dress!

Posted on March 23, 2021 by RocklandNYMom Posted in Events, Party, Reviews, Services, Shopping, Specialty Items .

Disclosure:  This is an unsponsored post.  We simply got an appointment at this amazing shop and wanted to share.

With E’s health issues at the forefront of our mind we needed to start making preparations for her First Holy Communion.  Although we are still unsure of what it will look like for her, we wanted to make it as special as possible.  E loves fashion, she chooses my clothing most days.  I knew she would want an extra special experience for her dress shopping.  I researched a few places that we could take her, and decided on Little Nikki’s in Ho Ho Kus NJ.  It’s less than a half hour away from us here in Rockland, and the shop just looked special.

Well I was right.  I emailed to make an appointment, hoping that we could do it safely and solo.  Well, that’s the only way they do it.  You book a 1 3/4 hour time slot and its just you and whomever you would like to bring.  We decided to invite the ladies in the family.  The whole making of the appointment was easy as pie.

The day of we showed up and what a CUTE SHOP!  So many beautiful dresses, I wish my wedding shopping had been this sweet!!!  You start by getting a quick tour of where to find things, and then a rolling rack that you can add any dresses you are looking to try on to.

Once we selected the options that we liked, E and I went to start the fashion show.  There are shoes you can wear while trying for effect, and of course we had to try the HEELS!

We tried so many variations of dress (there is really something for everybody) from layered, to eyelet lace, to classic, to prairie style. Our second runner up even had POCKETS!!!  It is not easy to decide (especially when you have a lot of opinions).

Here is what I LOVED.  As we modeled, the owner watched carefully, and provided some input but watched more carefully.  She waited for E to have a reaction.  She knew when E had chosen a dress before I did.  She came right in and completed the look with a veil and a tiara (how did she know E was a tiara gal?), and that was it.  I couldn’t believe my eyes, and neither could E.  We were sold.

After we made the decision we got to go over to the adorable photo-op area (now you’re speaking my language) to take “Said Yes to the Dress” pic ( I am saving the dress one because I want it to fit well when you see it).  What a great experience!!!  As always, should you decide to go to Little Nikki’s we appreciate you letting them know you heard it here.

What was even better, is that my sister is due with baby #2 in April, and so we walked next door to check out the fabulous collection of Baptism clothing as well, something tells me this is not our last trip :o)

Communion Mini-Sessions

Its COMMUNION time!!! Most local churches offer sessions with a photographer that they are affiliated with, but you can also do those outside of the church.  As you know, there are so many photographers out there, so we are offering you up some of our directory members who do Communion specific sessions (although all of our members would be happy to do them).  You might recognize the handsome guy on Jennifer Tesker’s as my (A).  He picked the location for his photos last year and they still make me cry.  Here’s the link to the review: CLICK HERE

While we are at it- don’t forget to book that hair and makeup for the big day.  Deb at Sparkle Up! books so fast, I’ve already reserved her for (E) who is still two years out.

Doll and Me Style at Sparkle Up Review

Sparkle Up in New City holds kids parties, does hair cuts and style for both boys and girls (even grown ups), and holds many events. Don’t forget to check out their Facebook page for updates!

The Doll and me Style, was the recent event at Sparkle Up. Similar to American Girl Doll in NYC (but at a fraction of the cost), the girls got to bring their dolls and they both could get their hair done.

Nails were also a dolly and me experience.  Sparkle Up uses special nail polish on both girls and dolls that is safe for them.

The girls also got to dress up in fun costumes and got to get some awesome sparkle tattoos.

There was also a fun photo shoot where the kids got to show of their make over as well as their dolls. The event was really fun, and it was really awesome to see all the smiles. So thank you to all the moms and parents for giving me permission to take photos! It was a really fun afternoon to see the girls dress up and coordinate with their dolls

.

The next event for Sparkle Up! is…

Sunday 3/10/19 from 12-1:30 pm

Decorate a pony to take home, have your hair done “pretty Pony” style, paint your nails and have your face paint done too!! Cost $25 per child call 634-0140 to register!!

Chocolatier-Matisse- More than Just Sweet Treats

Posted on February 13, 2019 by RocklandNYMom Posted in Birthdays, Classes, Crafts, Party, Reviews, Uncategorized .

Disclosure:  This is a sponsored post as we were invited over for a class.  All opinions expressed are my own.

Chocolatier-Matisse in Orangeburg has been on our radar for quite a while.  In addition to being a great resource for party favors, a sweet treat for someone you love, holiday trays, and of course chocolate covered strawberries, Danielle and her staff has so much more going on there.  They also hold craft classes (weekly) where your child can affordably make a great project, work on a chocolate component and have a great time.  These classes are drawn upon as inspiration for their super fun birthday parties, as well as scout troop events.

(A) and I were able to head over to the Dragon and Fairy Lantern Event held at the beginning of January.  Poor (E) was sick and was so so sad to be missing it.  That’s the first thing ill say about the Chocolatier Matisse Events that is really nice, they are geared toward BOTH boys AND girls. For me this is a no brainer as I have one of each to occupy, AND its incredibly difficult to find fun things to do for boys.  (A) is OBSESSED with Dragons so this was a home run for us.

Once all the kids were present and accounted for they made some chocolate dipped treats (rice krispies and pretzels).  There were extra toppings that could be added atop the chocolate and (A) had a ball playing with it.  When everyone had completed that task they moved to the other table which was all set up for the lantern craft.

There were more than enough helpers who walked around to repeat the simple directions to the kids, and they were all able to put their own spins on the project.  (A) really loved adding jewels to his dragon for a little extra sparkle when the candle was lit.  While the kids worked, other employees packaged up the chocolate delights that they had made for them to take home.  It was just about the perfect amount of time for the kids.  Enough for them to be creative and enjoy, without getting bored.  They accomplished two things the chocolate and the lanterns, and were ready to go home.

(A) has mentioned that he would love to do it again with more mystical creatures, that it would be really cool.  He has had the lantern on his nightstand since, and puts the light on each night to sleep.  He loved that he made a chocolate dessert and would love to go back and do that too.  (E) is dying to attend one as she loves arts and crafts and hasn’t let me forget that she was unable to attend.

Launch into Fun! – Review!

Posted on January 10, 2019 by RocklandNYMom Posted in Classes, Party, Reviews, Uncategorized .

Disclosure:  This is a sponsored post as we were hosted in giving Launch a try.

This past month the kids and I were invited to visit the new trampoline park Launch in West Nyack.  I have to start off by saying I love the location of this facility.  Right behind social security off of 304 it’s easy to get to from anywhere.  We recommend not getting there right when it opens as it is very popular and you will have to wait on line.  If you get there about an hour afterwards it’s much easier to get in.  I do love that you sign in on the computer before you get to the counter so your waiver is ready and they just scan it at the computer to log you in.  You don’t have to wait for people to be inputted into the system this way with kids who are looking to burn some energy.

The park is clean and lots of fun. There are no real restrictions for age at this park as there are at others with sections for younger kids and older.   Everyone has free reign.  I liked that part as it meant that my 5 and 8 year olds (of very different ability levels) could try the same obstacles.  This is particularly nice for my kids given that (E) is far more adventurous than (A) who is 3 years her senior.  She WANTS to venture where he goes and try the same things as he does, always has. Those who are worried about the bigger kids mixed with the younger can rest easy as there were lots of employees around checking for safety.

The kids bounced around for quite a while. (E) being a dancer and aspiring gymnast of sorts, really enjoyed the bouncing and then bouncing to jump into the foam pit (which was nice and clean- a big concern of mine when we go to such places because she’s asthmatic).  (A) preferred to run and bounce from trampoline to trampoline, and play dodgeball.

The kids really enjoyed the obstacle course which is really quite difficult, and they spent a long while swinging on the different parts trying to get through it. The parts that were too high, an employee jumped in and helped them up to get.  The hour time frame for bouncing was more than enough as my kids both came off red faced and ready for a break.

When break time is over there is a nice snack bar and tables you can utilize. Even though Launch itself was busy at the time, there wasn’t a wait while we were there.  Then we decided to play some video games.  This section is a great space to cool down and have a little fun before you head out.  (A) used his entire credit balance to play the Jurassic World game, and (E) chose to run around and try a bit of everything.  She even won a ball at the claw game!

The kids really enjoyed Launch and have already asked to have another play date there (every day since). It’s a great facility for getting the energy out, playdates, birthday parties, scout trips, fundraisers, really anything you can think of.  There are some fabulous deals to take advantage of right now including:

Halloween at Jills Ceramics!

Posted on September 16, 2018 by RocklandNYMom Posted in Classes, Crafts, Day Trips, Events, Out and about..., Party, Reviews, RNYM Events, Things to Do! .

Disclosure:  This is a sponsored post.  All opinions expressed are my own.

We adore our adventures around town together.  One that we end up doing quite often is visiting Jill of Jill’s Caramics.  We’ve spent so much time there in fact that my kids hug and kiss her every time we go.  That’s Jill.  She adores kids.  She’s been celebrating birthdays and crafting with kids in Rockland County for over 30 years.

We celebrate almost every holiday there, and have been creating the handprint art I so love together since (A) was 1.  When we had two days off in the beginning of September and an event coming up for Halloween we thought it was the perfect time to pay Jill a visit. The kids were allowed to each paint one thing they chose, but then I had another little project in mind… no surprise there it was made with their handprints.

I love walking around and looking at all the items that Jill has to paint.  The possibilities are endless.  Although I knew what I wanted the handprints to be I wasn’t sure what piece I wanted to put it onto until I walked around a bit and looked around.  Then in the back I saw the perfect plates.

I brought them over to Jill and told her my idea.  She LOVED it.  She’s always willing to give a crazy idea of mine a try.  The kids got to paint the backgrounds.  I really like that we didn’t really section off the colors for them, so each is a little off, just the way the kids wanted it.

That’s when Jill got to work.  She painted their hands and helped each child place it on the plate.

Once that was complete Jill started adding the embellishments to each hand to turn them into their intended characters.

Finally we had Halloween plates with the handprints of my little monsters <3

Since we opted for the Glaze this time, we had to leave them and come back a week later; after they were baked in the kiln.  When I went to pick them up I was so excited.  They are absolutely perfect.  They fit right in my plate holder, and as always, they are beautiful.

I’m so looking forward to our next family projects.  The kids then painted a puppy and a battleship, and their Aunt Shannon made an adorable little pumpkin tea light holder.  Experiences like these are the reason why I am so excited to share with our readers, and to help organize events for everyone.

In fact, we have a family event on 10/20 with two sessions 10-12 and 1-3.  We prefer that you RSVP to these events so that we have enough space for everyone, and you don’t need to show up at the beginning of your session, people come and go throughout. You can paint anything you’d like, but we call it a Halloween event because Jill has lots of super fun themed pieces for the Holiday.  Price varies by size of piece, and fluctuates slightly if you choose to Glaze rather than craft paint. To RSVP and/or order a pumpkin please either post in the Facebook event or email Rocklandnymom@yahoo.com .

https://www.facebook.com/events/234432913901908/

We also have a parents night out event scheduled for 10/24 from 7-9 where adults can come and paint any piece they would like.  Jill does make these super cool custom large pumpkins with light sets that we love though, so we are doing a special order for them.  They are $50 and must be ordered in advance so that she can make them (takes a week to make each one for us) in time for the event.  Due to the customized nature of the project its necessary that you pay us in advance for these pieces.  10 characters or less work best.  To RSVP and/or order a pumpkin please either post in the Facebook event or email Rocklandnymom@yahoo.com .

*As always, if you choose to go see Jill, we appreciate letting her know you heard it here. :o) *

Dear Dads… You’re Welcome

Posted on May 8, 2018 by RocklandNYMom Posted in Opportunities, Party, RNYM's Picks, Uncategorized .

Disclosure:  This is a sponsored post.

Ok, so, this weekend is Mother’s Day.  I know, I know, it came on so fast.  We at RocklandNYMom really value our parents (grandparents, caregivers), and know how much you put into everything that you do and so first of all, please accept our greatest PRAISE, and THANK YOU!  YOU GUYS ROCK!!!

That being said- I polled the Moms on our page to see what they really wanted for Mother’s Day, then went out and attempted to make it happen with some AMAZING giveaways that we are doing this week.  I am NOT able to provide for everyone but we do have 5 fabulous days of fun.  What do I have for you?  The list of items that were most requested by Moms, and where you can find them.  You’re welcome.

Surprise, surprise, Moms want to be PAMPERED.  I think I can speak for most parents in general, when I say that when it comes to doing something special for ourselves, we hesitate, but today we speak specifically about moms (so Dads no offense we will get to you next month).  So Moms asked for things that they should be doing for themselves (when possible) but are afraid to ask for:

  1. To have their nails done
This one I don’t actually have a recommendation for, there are SO many.  But I would love to be able to go monthly, with no GUILT to do this, especially with the warm weather coming, pedicures are a must.
  2. To get their hair highlighted (dyed) and cut.
I am actually giving one hair gift certificate away this week to Hair by Andrea www.hairbyandreanyack.com as well as an adorable tote, and a hair straightener.
Hair by andrea 2Not only can you make an appointment to go in and see Andrea- but she has a special for new clients you may want to take advantage of for your gift $85 for a full head of highlights and a cut.  She also makes house calls.

  3. For a Massage
I don’t have one to give away this time, but word on the street is that you can contact two FABULOUS places to book one:

    Facial Progress
wholeness center mothers day specials 2018
  4. A night away
Here’s something neat, Moms asked for one night away, in a hotel, even a STAYCATION.  Cool idea if you ask me, send her with a friend or leave the kids with grandparents and go together.  Some me/alone/couple time is ALWAYS a great idea.
  5. Someone to professionally clean the house
I do actually have one to give away this week.  Michelle of Dutchmen Cleaning who cleans my house has kindly offered to give a Momma a break and given us an all natural cleaning gift basket with a gift certificate to give away.

  7. Something witty
Our very first giveaway this week is from Shine Bright Co.  Its an ADORABLE gift bag with some super witty gifts inside.

  8. Professional Photos- Photos of Us
Moms are constantly taking photos, documenting EVERYTHING.  But we are TOO hesitant to jump in front of the camera. Also, it seems SO frivolous to ask for professional photos, but we would LOVE them.  We have a directory for that CLICK HERE.  Any of these talented photographers are ready and willing to document your special family moments.

In fact, two of them have donated gift certificates to pamper Mommies this week.

  10. MAD MONEY
And I don’t mean cash.  Know why?  People give me cash or a check and then I go and do something RESPONSIBLE with it.  Mad money, Mommas wanted a gift certificate to a home store, or their favorite clothing store, or jewelery store.  Somewhere NOT RESPONSIBLE, but guilt free.  Then, give her the child free time to go and use it- want to really make an impression?  Ask her to see what she got, and then pretend you ADORE it ;o)Pick her Poison and go with it.
Does she love to DECORATE? Then we suggest- Homegoods, Or Kirklands
JEWELS more her thing? Bourghol Brothers in Congers
Living with a STYLE MAVEN (that means she likes clothes)? Macys- Lord and Taylor- Nordstrom- Runway on the Hudson- or Ann Taylor (or the Loft) will do the trick!
