Family Photos

Posted on September 24, 2018 by RocklandNYMom Posted in Photo Obsessed, Photography, Reviews, RNYM Savings!, Uncategorized .

Disclosure:  This is a sponsored post.  All opinions are my own.

I’ve long preached the importance of taking photos with your family.  You don’t HAVE to take professional photos, you can use your timer and take your own (I do that too).  I like to have professional pics done because I don’t take photos as well as they do, I don’t know how to edit, and lets face it, it’s also less stressful for me.  I don’t have to worry that I got the perfect shot, or that I can’t get everyone to smile at the same time (especially if I am trying to get into the photo), and then there’s the problem of cutting back the number of photos.  Photographers are hard on their work and aren’t emotionally attached to your child’s face.  They choose the best photos of the set (even outtakes) and present only those to you, making your life easier.  I have enough trouble bringing together outfits for the family that “coordinate” and  don’t “match”.  This stresses me out in a way only a few understand.

Recently I’ve come to realize another layer of these photos which I want to bring light to.  When you have those professional photos taken, or take your own.  Please find a way to include your pets.  I’ve taken snapshots of our family pups here and there for years but it wasn’t until 3 years ago that we thought to bring our pup to our family holiday photo shoot.  The photos were amazing and it quickly became our tradition.

Boy am I glad it did.  This past summer we suffered immense loss when our 12 year old chocolate lab left us, followed almost a month to the day by our 15.5 year old mini-dachshund.  Although we knew it was coming, it was still one of the hardest thing we have ever had to go through as a family.  The kids now old enough to understand were also heart broken.  Its those photos that we look at fondly and remember them while we talk about the silly things that they did.

Which brings me to my point.  Take photos WITH your pet. Not just of your pet.  I know that when people DO take professional photos, they are reluctant to bring them, because the photos may not come out “perfect”.  It’s just another variable.  Here’s something to help ease your mind.  OUR (RNYM) photographers are all great at capturing your furry loves- so here’s our directory PHOTOGRAPHERS DIRECTORY.  In fact, they also love to be challenged, have a less traditional pet?  They have experience there too, give it a try.

I believe in this so deeply right now that after a month of a pup-less home we decided to foster (quickly followed by adoption) two black lab sisters.  A side note for those who may be interested, we worked with Animal Rescue R Us, out of Northern Jersey.  When we first got them they were 9 weeks old.  With our kids the ages that they are right now (5 and 8) these are likely the pups they will remember.  They get to grow up together.  I vowed to take photos of them as just pups and with us, the kids, the family, and to continue to as they grow.

We weren’t ready to share the news with everyone yet, just sent some pics to a few, one of whom was IC You Photography‘s Isabella.  She is an AVID animal lover and DEMANDED that we bring them in for a shoot, before they were too big.  To commemorate the first milestone, oh and bring the kids too.  So not knowing I went.

I watched in amazement as she was able to get 10 week old pups to sit, sleep, stay, and so much more.  I cried as I knew we were making memories of the pets my family will cherish for the next 10-20 years.  I reveled in the happiness that Isabella showed on her face as she worked with both kids and dogs, snuggling all of them. Listened to her ideas and chuckled thinking it was the cutest thing I had ever seen.

Meet Sasha

Meet Camy

We spoke throughout about how it was very good for the puppies to be handled, and socialized not only to Isabella, but her pups in the other room. Gambet even came in to say hi :o).  We discussed that No she could not have one of our dogs, and the rescue that we worked with to adopt them.  She snapped away and I didn’t even catch everything that she was doing.

Isabella even took the time to take a pic or two of my monkeys alone.  Love this one especially cause Little Miss just learned how to snap, and won’t stop. Check out her fingers <3

I’m so very glad that we did it, and look forward to bringing them to many shoots to come.  It also spurred the new promotion that Isabella is doing where she will offer discounted “Pet Portraits” for those rescuing pups.

It’s important, in my opinion, when you choose a photographer that you try to bring your “whole” family along.  I know that ALL of our directory members are happy to work with family pets.  If you are looking for a way to incorporate them but aren’t looking for a full photo shoot- the Palisades Mall does have pet days with Santa which we did take advantage of a few times and loved.  I am so super thankful for these photos being in my life.  I look forward to documenting their milestones to come together.

Fall Wall Clock Update

Posted on September 24, 2018 by RocklandNYMom Posted in Crafts, Items, Photo Obsessed, Reviews, Specialty Items, Uncategorized .

Disclousre:  This is an unsponsored post.  All opinions expressed are my own.

If you’ve been following RNYM for a while you know all about my wall clock.  I am always looking for fun and interesting ways to display my photos (of which my husband says I have 2 million annually).  That’s how the clock came about.  It wasn’t long before that was simply not enough and I needed to change it seasonally.  I began by painting red frames for Christmas time, then was unsure about what color to do for spring and put it out there for you all to choose.  You went with purple.

This past fall I decided that just doing another color was too tame.

Instead I went looking for a fall shaped frame.  Easier said than done.  I ended up on ETSY after extensive searching and found a few people who made pumpkin frames.  I messaged each one and finally found someone who could do what I was looking for.  https://www.etsy.com/listing/557182219/pumpkin-halloween-picture-frame-4-inch-x

The frames were complete in no time and I was able to easily use the inserts on the back to cut my 5×7 photos to fit.

Here is my finished product.

The frames are custom to my liking, and can be for yours too.  One of the most attractive parts is they were also cheaper than going to the local craft store and purchasing a regular frame.

*RNYM was not compensated for writing this post we just wanted to share our idea.  Regardless, if you should choose to use our link please make sure to mention that you read about them here.*

Halloween at Jills Ceramics!

Posted on September 16, 2018 by RocklandNYMom Posted in Classes, Crafts, Day Trips, Events, Out and about..., Party, Reviews, RNYM Events, Things to Do! .

Disclosure:  This is a sponsored post.  All opinions expressed are my own.

We adore our adventures around town together.  One that we end up doing quite often is visiting Jill of Jill’s Caramics.  We’ve spent so much time there in fact that my kids hug and kiss her every time we go.  That’s Jill.  She adores kids.  She’s been celebrating birthdays and crafting with kids in Rockland County for over 30 years.

We celebrate almost every holiday there, and have been creating the handprint art I so love together since (A) was 1.  When we had two days off in the beginning of September and an event coming up for Halloween we thought it was the perfect time to pay Jill a visit. The kids were allowed to each paint one thing they chose, but then I had another little project in mind… no surprise there it was made with their handprints.

I love walking around and looking at all the items that Jill has to paint.  The possibilities are endless.  Although I knew what I wanted the handprints to be I wasn’t sure what piece I wanted to put it onto until I walked around a bit and looked around.  Then in the back I saw the perfect plates.

I brought them over to Jill and told her my idea.  She LOVED it.  She’s always willing to give a crazy idea of mine a try.  The kids got to paint the backgrounds.  I really like that we didn’t really section off the colors for them, so each is a little off, just the way the kids wanted it.

That’s when Jill got to work.  She painted their hands and helped each child place it on the plate.

Once that was complete Jill started adding the embellishments to each hand to turn them into their intended characters.

Finally we had Halloween plates with the handprints of my little monsters <3

Since we opted for the Glaze this time, we had to leave them and come back a week later; after they were baked in the kiln.  When I went to pick them up I was so excited.  They are absolutely perfect.  They fit right in my plate holder, and as always, they are beautiful.

I’m so looking forward to our next family projects.  The kids then painted a puppy and a battleship, and their Aunt Shannon made an adorable little pumpkin tea light holder.  Experiences like these are the reason why I am so excited to share with our readers, and to help organize events for everyone.

In fact, we have a family event on 10/20 with two sessions 10-12 and 1-3.  We prefer that you RSVP to these events so that we have enough space for everyone, and you don’t need to show up at the beginning of your session, people come and go throughout. You can paint anything you’d like, but we call it a Halloween event because Jill has lots of super fun themed pieces for the Holiday.  Price varies by size of piece, and fluctuates slightly if you choose to Glaze rather than craft paint. To RSVP and/or order a pumpkin please either post in the Facebook event or email Rocklandnymom@yahoo.com .

https://www.facebook.com/events/234432913901908/

We also have a parents night out event scheduled for 10/24 from 7-9 where adults can come and paint any piece they would like.  Jill does make these super cool custom large pumpkins with light sets that we love though, so we are doing a special order for them.  They are $50 and must be ordered in advance so that she can make them (takes a week to make each one for us) in time for the event.  Due to the customized nature of the project its necessary that you pay us in advance for these pieces.  10 characters or less work best.  To RSVP and/or order a pumpkin please either post in the Facebook event or email Rocklandnymom@yahoo.com .

*As always, if you choose to go see Jill, we appreciate letting her know you heard it here. :o) *

Raising the Standards- New City School of Music

Posted on September 9, 2018 by RocklandNYMom Posted in Classes, Classes for Kids, Reviews, Uncategorized .

Disclosure:  This is a sponsored post.  All opinions expressed are my own.

You have heard me RAVE about (A)’s drum instructor Andrew time and time again. Andrew has blown us away with what he has already been able to impart upon our 8 year old boy.  One of the things that I really LOVE about him as an instructor is that he’s still performing, he’s a professional musician.  This means that there are times that he is away, even when we have lessons.  At first, this sounds intimidating, or may be upsetting to some people to think that “Their teacher” wouldn’t be there, or that a lesson would be cancelled.

Nope, not at New City School of Music.  I’ve mentioned before how very organized they are and this occurrence is no exception to that practice.  They have thought of everything.  If Andrew is called away to play with his band instead of cancelling and rescheduling another drum instructor fills in.  Now, I know what you are saying- “would you want another teacher?” and absolutely that’s nerve wracking to think about especially when your child has done so well with one.  Andrew let us know about this plan in advance and then explained to us that its actually a wonderful experience to switch things up, and learn from another qualified professional.  That perspective is important and to learn from another’s is actually a BONUS, not a determent.

As I’ve met a good number of the instructors at the Music School, I must say I’ve been impressed with them all, and was totally ready when we had a lesson that Andrew would miss, to meet and experience a lesson with another teacher.

I could tell that (A) was a little nervous.  Michael was very welcoming and made him feel at home immediately.  He sat and got ready to begin and was BLOWN AWAY.  Not only was his lesson great, he was able to learn new things, and jam a little.  In fact, he was going to see Michael the following week he gave (A) homework that included making up his own routine using the elements that they had gone over.  This ownership and excitement of being able to “write” his own music was a great incentive to practice and come in the next week ready to play.

This was a fabulous experience.  So many of the teachers at New City School of Music have SO much to share!  This actually spurred a great conversation between (A), Andrew and I about how great it is to learn things from different people.  Each teacher, coach etc. has a different specialty, and teaches things differently.  The more people you learn from, the better and more well rounded you actually become.  Its a fabulous thing to be able to do at a school.  A real benefit that isn’t available at some places.  Unique to NCSM. <3

The New City School of Music is running a special right now for new students that ENDS 9/20!!!  They also offer trial lessons so you can check it out.

** As always if you give them a call we appreciate you mentioning that you read it here first.**

Back to School Shopping at Macy’s Backstage!

Posted on August 31, 2018 by RocklandNYMom Posted in Items, Out and about..., Reviews, RNYM Savings!, RNYM's Picks, Uncategorized .

Disclosure:  This is a sponsored post.  All opinions expressed are my own.

Like many other locals I was wondering what the new Macy’s Backstage was.  We’ve all shopped Macy’s for years as its been an anchor store in the Nanuet mall FOREVER, and also at the Palisades mall since it was built.  The great options, service, and availability of products at Macy’s is well known, but what is this new store within a store?

“The thrill of the hunt takes center stage as you discover your favorite fashion & home brands at show-stopping prices!”

Its the same great Macy’s that we all know in love, but with higher discounts on the same famous maker brands you’ve become accustomed to from Macy’s, as well as some new ones.  Knowing that it was a discount retail space, we were excited to hunt for some awesome finds.

The shoe section is right near the entrance so naturally little miss (E) had to hit that spot.  They had a nice selection in her size, so she tried a few, settling on two pairs.

The kids section at the Palisades Macys Backstage is over by a little toy section as well, that’s where we found (E)’s favorite item.  Little (E) needed earphones for school and they had these adorable little my little pony ones that she snatched right up.

Then we went through the racks to see what they had for back to school clothing.  This can always be an interesting afternoon with (E) who has her own sense of style.  At 8 (A) is also developing more of his own style, it was nice to watch him choose some staple pieces.

We found some cute stuff and headed into the dressing rooms.  The kids had fun trying on their items, and then they saw the signs on the wall.  They loved them!  We had to run from room to room to see what they said!!

At checkout we were given a scratch off coupon and saved $5!  We got 2 pairs of shoes, headphones, and 5 shirts for less than $90!!! What a bargain!!

Macy’s Backstage also has backpacks, home items, adult clothing, accessories, all the great items that the regular Macy’s carries, but at super low prices.  We are also lucky enough to have two locally to check out (Nanuet and Palisades- we went to Palisades).

GIVEAWAY

** As a special introduction to our readers Macy’s Backstage Palisades is giving away a $100 gift card to one lucky winner.  To enter- comment on this page or our social media post before Saturday 9/1 at 8 pm and tell us what you would use the card on (we’d also love a share and a like). Winner will be chosen at random via 3rd party website. **

The Land of Make Believe- Hope NJ

Posted on August 30, 2018 by RocklandNYMom Posted in Day Trips, Day Trips, Reviews, Uncategorized .

Disclosure:  This is an unsponsored post.  All opinions expressed are my own.

Since the kids were at camp all summer, I am working my hardest to have some quick and enduring fun with them.  Some time to really enjoy ourselves.  A friend suggested The Land of Make Believe for the day.  So we made plans to go with a few friends and headed down.

Takes about 1 hour and 15 minutes to get there, but its a relatively straight shot.  I didn’t know what to expect but we knew that there were water attractions as well as regular rides etc.  Knowing that I live with some little fish (thanks Condors Swimming) we dressed for water and brought dry clothes.

**RNYM Tips**

  • They only take cash so go to the ATM in advance.
  • Pack a lunch and snacks to save some cash and eat healthily.
  • If you aren’t a lunch packer, food is relatively inexpensive for such places.
  • The Kids Stuff Coupon Books have a coupon for buy one adult get one free, so if you bring 2 adults, or go with a friend your admission is cut in half.
  • The large locker held my good size soft cooler, my family bag as well as my friends bag.

The water slides are fun and if you get there early I would hit them first as the lines can get lengthy.  The lazy river is AWESOME (always a fan) and the kids adored the splash pool (seriously would have stayed there all day).  The water jungle gym over by the lazy river also super fun, the kids and adults learn quickly that the ringing of the bell means the HUGE bucket is about to SPILL!!  I forgot my darn water proof case for my phone so I have no photos of this area- but luckily Jen did :o).

We were there from 11 to about 2 when we broke for lunch, went back and were waterlogged by about 4.  At this time we changed and decided to head over to rides.  I wish we had gotten there a little earlier because we didn’t get to all the rides we wanted to before the park started to close.  They close at 6 sharp, which means that around 5:45 they stop giving rides.  Even though we didn’t get a chance to go on all of them, the ones we did they loved.  The roller coaster, the dragon ride, the cars.. so so many they adored.

This is a GREAT- AFFORDABLE day trip for families.  It gets somewhat crowded mid-day but early and later on it was super manageable.  https://lomb.com/

WARNING– like all fun day trips you exit through the store, its just a good business plan for them.  My kids are getting really good at knowing that we don’t buy stuff at each place, but I have a secret.  I’ve been purchasing Christmas Ornaments at each of our excursions this summer to give to them this winter.  I want to decorate our tree with our memories.  Its going to be super cool and an awesome surprise.

Summary: Had a blast, good for most ages- the water area is better for the older kids than the rides area as (A) was starting to get tall for some of the rides at this point.  Plan to spend the day, try to get there when it opens and head out when they cut off rides.  Oh and bring lots of sunscreen, there isn’t much shade.  Have an awesome time and as always, we appreciate if you let them know you heard about them here <3

Moms Gone Wild- An Unlikely Girls Day Out

Posted on August 29, 2018 by RocklandNYMom Posted in Health and Wellness, Items, Out and about..., Reviews, Self Care, Services, Shopping .

Disclosure:  This is an unsponsored post.  We had a noteworthy experience, and sometimes that means you just have to share.

**WARNING- NO NUDITY- BUT WE TALK ABOUT BREASTS AND BRAS HERE**

We went shopping… but not just any shopping. We went BRA shopping.  Yep that’s right, C, K and I went shopping FOR THE GIRLS.  Three of us friends were bitching about ill fitting undergarments and finally decided to do something about it.  Determining that there was safety in numbers we made a date and went.

Not only did we go, we went for the gusto.  SO three frugal (large chested) mommies who hate spending money on themselves, went to Nordstrom at the Garden State Mall to tackle over the shoulder boulder holders.  Yes this is worth mentioning because we usually shop at wherever has a sale on bras just like everyone else.

So a crazy unlikely girls day out ended up being one of my favorite mom dates ever.

We found the lingerie section (in the basement) and were at once greeted (perhaps we looked lost?).  The three of us aren’t skiddish- so we took a dressing room together.  Kathy went right to work asking who wanted to go first.  She measured all three of us and left.  Upon her return she had several different bras for each of us to try on.

Here’s what I love- she made note of some super interesting info about each of us that I am not sure everyone would pick up on right away- my love of earthtones, Chelsea’s love of the dramatic, and Katy’s sensibility- and brought bras that appealed to each.  There were of course bras that were sensible- but I gotta be honest, I haven’t bought a PRETTY bra in quite some time, and even my “sensible” purchase was pretty.

Some of them weren’t right, it was trying on and required some work.  But those that did.  Dude- I am a 34 DD and I don’t feel like I am wearing a BRA.  Also, the girls don’t look pointy, aren’t hanging out, nor do they cut into my shoulders or sides.

Yeah yeah yeah lets get down to the nitty gritty for those of you who don’t really wanna hear the romantic parts.  Like how I took dressing room selfies to compare how they looked in my shirt :o)

Facts:

  • Despite my greatest fears the bras were not that much more than ones I’ve purchased at Kohls.  I was certain they would be $200 a piece and they were not- more like $60-70 for mine the most expensive I considered being $84.
  • No tax it’s Jersey so “whew”.
  • The larger band sizes (40 and above) have less options, and although the overall fit is much better, they do still feel like a bra is on.
  • Didn’t love their panty selection- so even though I really wanted new ones to coordinate and go for the whole shebang, I am heading elsewhere to find some.
  • Splurged on a lingerie bag to wash them in so that I can keep them in good shape.
  • I learned valuable fitting and care information (shared below).  Guys- I’m 38 and I didn’t know any of this stuff.
    • You should have a minimum of 4 bras that you alternate, not including your strapless or special occasion one.
    • Bras should be replaced every year (whoops).
    • When you are purchasing you should be on the last hook as over time they will stretch and you will have to move it in.
    • They need a day to rest in between wears.
    • They should be washed every 2 wears on a normal day, more often in Summer and more like 3 in the Winter if you aren’t sweating.
    • Bras should be laundered in a lingerie bag, clipped together, on the gentle cycle and hung dry (yeah I’ve never done ANY of that).

We wore new bras out of the store (yep chucked the one I wore in right then and there) then finished our outing with a nice lunch at the mall.  Being super proud of ourselves we even shared photos of our new organization, and disposing of our old ones.

I can’t speak for everyone- but overall everyone is happy.  It was a nice afternoon with ADULTS, and we did something for OURSELVES.  I feel comfortable and pretty.  I constantly try to remind myself to do something for me every now and again and this fit the bill.  We DID promise to go again in a years time to be measured and purchase new as we should- focusing on the fun and scheduling more girls time.

I don’t care where you go- but go and get fitted.  Spend some time on you.  If you are anything like me you have extreme guilt when doing so.  RNYD constantly tells me to go ahead, to get what I need, to do something for myself.  I hold myself back from doing so most often.  This felt good.

**Dads if you’re reading this, you can help them by purchasing a gift card and taking the kids for an afternoon.  Heck, call her friends and arrange it.  Once RNYD scheduled a date for me and my BFF to go to a show and it was awesome, anther time he surprised me with a GC to my favorite salon.  I never would have done it for myself.**

Moms with larger band sizes- where would you suggest a momma who need a 40+ go for a GREAT fitting and nice look?  Also- Favorite place to get some cute (but functional) undies to coordinate with my new bras??? Love to hear your thoughts.

Whoa oo oo oo stomp!  This is the greatest show! This is how the annual Day Camp in the Park play begins this year.  The opening number… excitement is in the air as fellow campers, counselors, and parents all gather to watch the kids put on the performance they have worked on since the beginning of camp.  It’s another one of those wonderfully tailored, yet low maintenance ways that DCITP pulls the kids in, showcases their talents, provides a safe comfortable environment for them to try new things, and gives us parents another glimpse into the adventure that is camp.

From actors to dancers, from singers to stage crew and let’s not forget the props, the annual play is a big deal for all of the participants and this year was one of particular excitement. The play is directed by Day Camp in the Park’s Improv Specialist who works alongside the Art Director, as well as the Dance Director on choreography.  All campers have a chance to participate in this amazing bonding experience should they choose and even the set crew is campers.

This year the theme takes after one of Day Camp in the Park’s core values- making kids feel super special.  As many know, (R) is a member of the Rockland All Star Dance Team, directed by Vicki’s Dance Studio.  She was so excited to be part of the camp play and use her dance talents that we had to move our vacation up a week!!!  She did not want to be away the week of the play and she insisted on bringing her script and practicing every night.  Her dance was adorable during the play and she was smiling bright the entire time.

While (R) was given a dance part to match her interests, singers were given singing parts, artists helped create the props, and the main characters were a mix of all genders and ages.  Getting ready for the play is the bonding part.  It’s an experience the kids will never forget.  The storyline itself spotlighted super heroes who are eventually outshined by “regular” kids who decide that there are “super” powers inside us all.

But the true essence of Day Camp in the Park comes through during the performance, with all the campers cheering on the play participants, counselors singing along with their campers on stage, and the entire audience clapping and laughing at all the right times.  It’s not about the story.  It’s about being together, supporting each other and having a blast while doing it.  The camp play involves everyone and everyone feels involved.

Afterwards, there was a cast party back at the drama cabin where they got to celebrate their hard work with their team, families and the camp directors.    This was a super special experience and we cannot wait for next year to see what this team pulls off with their super heroes, super people.

DCITP is currently running an early bird special for next year’s campers.  If you are interested in checking it out don’t hesitate you can’t beat THESE DEALS.

Friendship- the Unexpected Bonus at Condors Swimming

Posted on August 19, 2018 by RocklandNYMom Posted in Classes, Classes for Kids, Health and Wellness, Reviews .

Disclosure:  This is a sponsored post.  All opinions expressed are my own.

Special thanks to Jennifer Tesker-Photography for the photos used in this post.

Well- she’s actually an even bigger part than that.  You see a good portion of the post is about Jennifer and her girls.  They swim at Condors with us.  Her daughter (S) swims with (E) and her other daughter (L) is on pre-team with (A).  For the 2017-2018 swim seasons they have been in the same groups.  Throughout all their swim time together, they have not only learned to be better swimmers, they have also become friends.

But not just- “Hey Good to see you” friends, like when are we having a play date- can they come swimming at Gran’s house, i’m ditching you at our photo viewing and playing outside all afternoon friends.  This is possible because of the retention rate at Condors.  People who come to see the program love it so much that they stay- so our kids have been swimming together a LONG time.

When we walk into Felix Festa Middle School on our scheduled days the first order of business is ALWAYS to find out buddies.  (A) won’t even walk over without (L), and Little Miss likes to sit in the bleachers and chat with (S) before their lesson.

Lots of learning and fun happen in our half hour lessons- but aside from the benefits of fitness and safety that I often discuss- there is also a TON of laughter and fun happening.  The kids chat, make plans, and encourage one another to do better.  (A) and (L) even have some friendly races from time to time.

In fact, we have a little group of parents that hang out in the stands now (very inclusive if you see us come on over) with a total of 10 kids in the program- and we’ve really gotten to know one another because of the kids swim schedules.

We’ve had the summer off and the kids are asking about lessons once again.  I am so happy that this is the case because the school months are my absolute favorite times for them to swim.  They continue to hone their skills in the off season, stay in shape and get to have some great fun.  Ashley is ALWAYS amazing at helping us find the perfect session to fit into our super busy schedules- and we get to hang with our buddies again!!!

For information on pricing- and schedules or just to ask some questions hit up Ashley at lessons@condorsswimming.com

*As always we appreciate you letting Condors know we sent you- that’s how we continue to bring you the best information and programs in and around Rockland County.**
