My Au Pair

Posted on January 23, 2015 by RocklandNYMom Posted in Reviews, Specialty Items, Thoughts.. .

Disclosure:  This is a sponsored post.  All opinions expressed are my own.

There are what seems like a million childcare options available these days.  Most of them outrageously expensive, and how do you choose between them?  One that is often overlooked but can be most affordable (especially if you need many hours and have multiple children) is an au pair.

Family

This is one of the options that I have personal experience with, and therefore it is near and dear to my heart.  As a child I grew up in a one-parent household.  My parents were divorced and my father traveled for his job.  A teacher with 3 children at home my mother needed some help.  We had some neighbors who had moved to the United States from France a few years earlier whom my family had become close with.  They had an older cousin who wanted to come to the United States.  It was arranged that she would come and live with us and help my mother to care for us in exchange for housing and some additional pay.

Enter my au pair Violin.  She was awesome.  She ate tomatoes like apples, wore heels every day and taught me conversational French.  My mother didn’t have to worry about our before and after care because she was always there to get us on and off the bus.  She helped us make meals, get homework done, work on projects, she was always there for us.  I have one very fond memory of coming home after winning an award for crazy hat day and her happiness, ohhh that big giant hug.  She was family.  Who could love your children and care for them more than family?

Many people also think of having an au pair as being for the rich.  In reality it’s one of the most cost effective childcare options.  My family was not rich by any stretch of the imagination.  In fact, if my mother had been forced to pay for before and after care for us, tutors, and also an occasional babysitter, it would have cost her much more money, especially because back then there was only half day kindergarten and my brother was 5.  It is actually one of the most cost-effective childcare options.

Au Pairs provide so much more than childcare to your family.  Au Pairs help with light household chores, laundry, meals and errands.  The cost of an au pair is PER FAMILY, not per child, as with daycares and your children are in the comfort of their home if they are sick.  No need to worry about who is going to watch them while you go to work until their fever breaks.

This weekend only, new families who register from January 23rd through January 27th will save $75 on their registration fee and $400 on their program fee. Families who select their au pair by February 23, 2015 will save an additional $500—for a total savings of $975! To qualify, families must welcome their au pair by October 2, 2015.

What would you bring on a deserted island?

Posted on January 22, 2015 by RocklandNYMom Posted in Direct Sales, Photo Obsessed, Reviews, Specialty Items .

Disclosure:  This is a sponsored post.  All opinions expressed are those of Halli Tibbals, Younique presenter extraordinaire.

Whenever anyone asks me what three things I’d bring on a deserted island with me, I always say one of them has to be mascara (and a GOOD lip balm and a HOT man).

All joking aside, it doesn’t matter what kind of night I’ve had (or even day).  I don’t leave the house without putting mascara on.  Yet, I’ve stumbled to find a really good one that actually maximizes your lashes to the point that people wonder if they’re false. For the last several months, I’ve been using Younique‘s Moodstruck 3D Lash set and I’m in love! It applies easily like a mascara yet looks like the best falsies out there. Anyone that has tried false eyelashes, knows that it’s not that easy and the chemicals are plentiful (not something I love).  SO that’s one of a few added BONUSES to the 3D fiber lash mascara…it’s naturally based (made from tea leaves!), cruelty free, paraben free, water resistant and a GREAT price at $29.00 for a set that lasts about 4 months!

Fiber Lashes 2

After using it for several months and I realized that I could never use another mascara again….I then decided to become a presenter for Younique! I love what I am doing and feel incredible about the products that I am selling because they are naturally based, USA made and REALLY incredible!

For those of you who are contemplating purchasing it, or even are interested in learning more, you can contact me at:  halliny76@aol.com place an order at youniqueproducts.com/Halli or give me a call to talk some more at: 614-595-4848.

I am so convinced that you are going to want to give it a try that I’ve included a set of tips for use.

  1. Start with an eyelash curler to get maximum effect.
  2. Now, take out both mascara tubes and hold BOTH in one hand! Go through steps 3, 4, & 5 on one eye 1st then the other!)
  3. Open the translating gel. Apply a coat of the transplanting gel – like a mascara.
  4. Start mid-way up your lash and wiggle the fibers through. Don’t forget the lashes near the outer corner of your eye! That’s where you get the real WOW factor!
  5. Seal those fibers in with another coat of the transplanting gel. This is where you will start to see the lashes re-separate into long thick beautiful lashes
  6. Be patient! This is something new and there is a slight learning curve. In a few applications you will be a master!!! AND YOU WILL BE IN LOVE!

Shining Star Tutoring!

Posted on January 9, 2015 by RocklandNYMom Posted in Reviews, Specialty Items .

Shining Star Logo

Disclosure:  This is a sponsored post.  All opinions are my own.  Todd Flesher is a certified teacher and although I have found his process to be educationally sound it is still up to the parent to interview and find a tutor that they find to be appropriate for your child’s needs.

As an educator this is a super busy time for me.  Progress reports have just come back for the semester, and some students are struggling as the material grows in difficulty.  For those of us who have midterms, these huge cumulative tests are looming just weeks away and we are at a loss for what to do for our students.  I stay after school with them but there are only so many hours in the day.   That’s where a good tutor comes in.  That is where Shining Star Tutoring come in.

Shining Star Tutoring is a RocklandNYMom.com directory member and the man behind it, Todd Flesher, is a tutor extraordinaire.  Todd is a certified teacher who tutors in all subjects.  He has 9 years’ experience as a math teacher, as well as a degree in administration.  Although Mathematics is a specialty he can help with all subjects including SAT Prep.  He is available 7 days a week and flexible on location.  I was lucky enough to sit down with this dedicated educator to speak to him about his tutoring philosophy.

Todd approaches each one of his students as individuals and focuses on their specific needs.  He uses common core aligned assessments to identify areas of need and remediates using the philosophy of teaching the whole child.  He is focused on connecting the information learned to the student, to making it meaningful and therefore creating an enduring understanding of the material.

Todd uses a variety of ways to help his students to understand a concept.  As a math person myself, I took the opportunity to pick his brain about a topic that my students have struggled with in the past, equivalent fractions.  It’s true that fractions scare most students.  I have joked with colleagues in the past about dressing as one for Halloween.  When I asked him how he would help a student who was struggling with the concept he asked me to wait for a second.  When he got up from the table I was unsure what to expect.  He returned with a bag of manipulatives, a good sign.  Todd is ready for student who have varying learning styles.  He continued to teach me as if I was a student who was struggling with finding equivalent fractions.  He first helped me to understand the terminology (the building block from which he could continue the lesson).  Todd questioned me until I was able to state that equivalent fractions were different pieces that made up the same value.

Todd Teach 2

From there he was able to have me create some using the bars.  When I created the equivalencies, he then helped me to see that there was a pattern to them, a way to determine how to make one.  I was not only learning, I was coming to the conclusions on my own through his line of questioning (which of course he related to situations that would be easy for a student to relate to).  This type of learning is what we strive for as educators.  To have the time to help students to realize that they have all of the tools necessary for success and that all they need to do is draw upon those experiences and apply them.  Todd helped me to do that easily (and believe me as a fellow educator I didn’t make it easy on him).

Todd is an experienced teacher who is has clearly joined the profession for the right reasons.   He is dedicated to helping students meet with success.  He reports back to parents on the progress that he is making with a student and helps them to work with the student at home as well.  He is happy to reach out to classroom teachers and make sure that they are on the same page.

If you are looking for a tutor and would like to speak to Todd you can call him on his personal phone (845) 461-7288, email him at TFleshe@yahoo.com or contact him through his facebook page Shining Star Tutoring.  He would be more than happy to assess your needs and work on a tutoring plan that will work for you and your child.

Story Time with Mrs. Claus

Posted on December 11, 2014 by RocklandNYMom Posted in Christmas 2014, Out and about..., Reviews, We're Having a Party .

Disclosure:  This is a sponsored post as I was invited to the Mrs. Claus Story time event.  All opinions expressed are my own.  All photos were provided by Stefanie Murphy Media.  Although I took my own, hers were just too amazing.

There are so many options out there for Christmas experiences it’s difficult to weed through them.  I am always on the hunt for something a little different, not the norm.  That’s why when I heard about the story time with Mrs. Claus I was intrigued.  It just so happens that this event was a collaboration between three of our directory participants; My Sweet Pea in New City, Glamour Girls Parties, and Stefanie Murphy Media.  Knowing the quality of each of their work, I was very excited to attend and report back my findings of their first full collaboration (of many that I overheard).

Why I loved the idea… I like that for a change we got to see the woman behind the man.  I like that it was a smaller more personal group (the event was capped at 20 children and their parents).  I really like that Stefanie Murphy Media was there, so I didn’t have to worry about running around and getting the best photo of my kids to capture the memory.  I was able to sit back and enjoy the event and know with certainty that Stefanie would capture some golden moments (uploading them to a downloadable gallery for me, which is included in the price of the event) while I watched the magic.

Some of the amazing photos taken by Stefanie Murphy Media.

I’ve been to countless Santa breakfasts at places like the mall and other areas and most of us know how they run, I am going to try to focus on what was a little different and very neat about this event.  Mrs. Claus did interact with the children walk around and chat and it was very personal because it wasn’t overcrowded.  Although there was plenty of space in the room for the children to wonder (and (E) did because at 18 months she doesn’t sit well for long periods of time).  The children were not left to simply run around while having their snack.  The event which ran from 10-12 noon on 12/7 was structured in a way where we were able to get some great holiday pictures and the kids had lots of entertainment.

Upon arrival guests were checked in and received their Santa hats.  There was the option of embroidering them for an additional fee and although I didn’t have it done I was wondering if I should have as they were adorable.  As people were arriving Mrs. Claus walked around and chatted with the parents and children.

Let’s talk about Mrs. Claus.  Mrs. Claus was a fantastic find, Glamour Girls knocked it out of the park.  The dedication to realism was great.  She was there early and in character before anyone arrived.  She also stayed until everyone was gone to change back to herself so as not to ruin the illusion.  She not only interacted with the children easily, but she read them two stories, sang Christmas carols with them (she had a lovely voice click here to see video), danced with them, and also played a few games (Mrs. Claus says and freeze dance were awesome).  The entertainment itself lasted about 45 minutes to an hour (which as you know is as long as the kids could handle anyway), at which time the kids were able to have a snack, move around a bit and then prepare to have some private pictures with Mrs. Claus.

All in all I would say they knocked this one out of the park.  It was easy and fun.  Upon leaving (A) was unable to pinpoint a favorite part, he simply told me that he had a really good time and didn’t want to leave the store.  It was organized and adorable.  The staff was super friendly and had great rapports with the children.  I am very much looking forward to their next collaborative event which might just be in January.  Keep an eye out for them so you don’t miss out!  My Sweet Pea has just introduced their new newsletter which you can sign up for by emailing MySweetPeaStore@yahoo.com .

From Geek to Glam

Posted on December 11, 2014 by RocklandNYMom Posted in Money Momma, Out and about..., Reviews, Specialty Items .

Disclosure:  This is a sponsored post.  All opinions expressed are the opinion of Jamie who authored this post.

I don’t often get the opportunity to dress like a human.  I really mean that.  Most of the time I am in my mommy clothes or so focused on whatever financial analysis I am working on that I don’t (or can’t) take the time to  accessorize my clothes or make myself look like anything more than a finance geek.  That’s why this week I was so excited to get to spend the morning with the very fashionable and talented Artistic Consultant, Elizabeth Manna.  As an Artistic Consultant, Elizabeth focuses on all areas of design, from fashion and jewelry to interior decorating. Today, she was here to focus on jewelry.

When Elizabeth arrived at my house I had to warn her that she was catching me at a vulnerable moment.  I was in the middle of a very complex family budgeting analysis and incredibly stressed out about a family photo shoot we were having later that afternoon.  In essence, I was in full on finance geek + mommy mode. If she was going to make me look and feel glamorous, well, she had her work cut out for her.

Here I am looking like my finance- mommy self….

 geek picture

Elizabeth is just one of those people who always looks effortlessly pulled together.  I am NOT one of those people.  In fact, I wear the same jewelry every day.  Luckily, no matter how little or large one’s fashion and design sense is, Elizabeth can remedy the situation.  I found her consultation services to be incredibly valuable.  I learned a lot about how to pair jewelry with all the different clothes in my closet.  In particular we focused on three areas: my outfit for the later photo shoot, my dress for an upcoming function, and my every day work clothes.

As I was carrying down the sweater I planned to wear to the photo shoot, the first thing Elizabeth said was that since the sweater has a belt we should not look at any long pieces.  I hadn’t even put the sweater down yet!  She works that quickly.  Seconds later, she had picked out my earrings and bracelet from her stash (jewelry lovers will want to dive head first into this stash and she does allow purchases), showed me how to wear it properly, and explained why these particular pieces of were cut correctly for this outfit.

Photo-shoot taken care of next step:  The little black dress for the upcoming function.  Because the dress is black, Elizabeth explained that we should pop some color.  She also explained that wearing a longer necklace will draw the attention away from my belly (an area of particular difficulty for me) and onto the necklace instead.  I had always that it would be the other way around. Go figure, I was wrong!

The little black dress and the “pop” of color needed to dress it up a bit and pull it all together.  Event Dress

We also spent time accessorizing my work clothes.  One big thing I learned was that accessories do not take away from the professionalism of an outfit.  Accessories ENHANCE the professionalism of an outfit and many accessories can work multiple ways with multiple outfits.  In fact, the same bracelet that I am wearing to the casual photo shoot will be worn with the little black dress (I love the economics behind that, a diverse piece or two is key!).

All dressed and ready to go, wearing my amazing and diverse bracelet.

Working with Elizabeth was such a fun experience. I felt comfortable the entire time and could tell she really loves making her clients feel put together.  For the remainder of this month, she will also be offering pieces from the Lia Sophia collection at 50% off.

Elizabeth can be contacted directly to make a purchase, book a consultation, or set up a design party with your friends. I also understand that these parties sometimes include wine and cake.  .

Elizabeth will be representing Lia Sophia at the Albertus Magnus High School Christmas boutique on December 13th.  Everything in the catalogue will be sold at 50% off so make sure to check in with Elizabeth to get all the savings!

Excuses…

Posted on December 10, 2014 by RocklandNYMom Posted in Reviews, Specialty Items .

Disclosure:  This is a sponsored post as I was asked to try Rodan and Fields.  All opinions expressed are my own.

Excuses…we all have them, mostly when it comes to taking care of ourselves.  It costs too much money, I don’t have time, I’m not worth it.  I have used them all and like most I was very skeptical of the Rodan and Fields skin care lines that seem to have swept through all of our worlds like a blizzard in (November??)… When independent consultant Megan Sheehan joined our Direct Sales Page, she challenged me to use it and report my findings, confident that I would love it…. Below are my thoughts…

My face and I have battled since my teen years when I was losing terribly to acne until I eventually gave in and went on the super strong Accutane.  It cleared up my face, but wreaked havoc on my skin in general.  Since then I have been super cautious using anything on my face, and at the age of 34, was still having breakout issues.  Broken and worried that my face was going to age early (because I couldn’t wear almost anything with an SPF because the result was always breakouts) I took Megan up on her offer and tried REDEFINE.

I love it.  I just ordered a refill on my daily facial mask.  I have had people ask me what foundation I switched to because they loved it.  The answer?  None, it’s my skin, I am much more confident without makeup these days.  My face is brighter and smoother.  I have even had people say that it looks like I lost weight.  Sadly no, it’s my face firming up.

It Costs Too Much Money…

Nope, I don’t buy it.  Here’s why.  I have been that woman, walking through the facial isle in Target, Shop Rite, etc.  I pick up a $14.95 bottle of face wash, and then the coordinating $20 moisturizer with sunscreen, the facemask etc… I hate it, and I am stuck.  I can’t return it, I broke out, and so the next time I am out I try again… I have spent waaaaaay more on items I don’t use than on this regimen.  R&F claims that it’s about a 60 day supply, it’s more.  I have been using mine for 4 months and I just had to order a refill on my Daily Mask, but mostly because I used too much when I first started applying.  That having been said, I am certain that I am saving money on beauty items (not to mention space in my bathroom cabinets).  Oh yeah, and there’s a 60-Day money back guarantee… so its risk free…

A glimpse at some of the items I have purchased over time and now throw away for my regimen.

Facial Graveyard

It Takes Too Long…

I thought so too, especially when I read that the mask should be on about 2 minutes (to let it dry).  With two little ones (4 y and 18 m) no way I will find the time.  Wrong!  I put it on while I am getting my 4 year old ready for bed.  He calls it my “Skeleton” face because I started in the fall when his skeleton PJ’s came out.  He thinks it’s funny.  I sometimes wear it for longer than 2 minutes.  In the am, I put it on and then make my coffee and turn on the shower.  It works great.  I have been very dedicated to using the product and I have been able to work it into my busy lifestyle no problem (yes with coaching, the site and working full time too).

A picture of me wearing my “Skeleton” face around the house.

Skeleton Face

MY SKIN, MY HOUSE!

I am always afraid that something will dry out my skin, or over moisturize, causing break outs.  This regimen has done neither.   My skin looks healthier, not dry at all and no breakouts.  I have purchased skin products in the past that have bleached my comforters (URGH) and was nervous that with Retinol in it the same would happen this time.  Happy to report, no bleaching (RNYD would not have been happy).

My Conclusions…

I am done with excuses and I am going to continue with my regimen.  When I had questions I emailed Meghan and she got right back to me.  If she didn’t know the answer right away, she called the R&F nurses, it was 24 hours or less to get an answer.  I asked if there was something I could use for my occasional pimples, and they had a perfect recommendation.  The lip renewing serum was also amazing I used it one morning and was really blown away.  The older I get the more likely I am to go for quality vs. convenience.  I splurge on the pair of jeans that makes me feel good (instead of multiple cheaper pairs that I hate and donate a month later).  My face is no exception.  I am done playing supermarket roulette, I have found the product that works and couldn’t be happier (it actually makes life easier to know and just order it when I am low!).

Feeling great about my skin I no longer need to wear makeup on our little outings.

Dreamworks North Pole Adventure

Posted on November 14, 2014 by RocklandNYMom Posted in Christmas 2014, Day Trips, Out and about..., Reviews .

Kids and Shrek Family

Disclosure: This is a sponsored post as we were invited for an adventure.  All opinions expressed are my own.

I learned a valuable lesson from my son last year when we went on a Santa Trolley ride in CT.  As a parent we sometimes have expectations that are somewhat unreasonable.  What is magical for a 4 year old differs greatly than what is considered magical to an adult.  We require much more smoke and mirrors.  I left thinking that the Trolley was cute but not quite what I had expected and chose not to BLOG it.  Well wouldn’t you know, a year later he talks about it all the time (so much so that I am going to finally write that post).  What I learned from that experience is that I need to take their lead, be more patient and just enjoy while they enjoy.  Why is this past experience relevant to today’s post?

We had the pleasure of going to the Dreamworks North Pole Adventure at Ridge Hill today 11/11/14.  We have seen it posted everywhere with questions about it, is it worth the trip? How much does it cost?  So obviously we had to check it out.

Quick Information:

  • Strollers are not allowed, but there is an area to park your stroller off to the side.
  • You cannot take your own pictures.
  • There is a special deal that you can pre-purchase online where you will save $25 off of the family package, this is by far the best deal available, and it expires soon. You can purchase the package now and use at a later date, but the date to purchase by is November 26th. So if you are photo obsessed like myself, I would purchase it ASAP.
  • As you can see on the website, weekends are already booked solid. If at all possible go during the week when it is less crowded.
  • There is a little playground right outside of the adventure for kids to play on. I waited on line while Nana watched the kids play. It made waiting much easier on me.

I made an appointment as directed on the website and we went first thing in the morning.  At 9:45 there was already a line forming for the 10:00 opening, a good sign, it’s in high demand.  When you check in a photo of your group is taken and then added to your “passport” you hand this photo to the helpers along the way and they use the barcode to keep your photos and projects connected to your group.

Passport Ready

Once inside the guides lead you through your adventure.  You get to have a little interactive play with Shrek and Donkey.  Where they set the whole thing up.  Yes (A) did speak to the screen and nod when they asked questions.

(A) talks to Shrek.

Once the stage is set you get to go in and create your sleigh.  It is fun for the kids (they are to tech savvy) and it gets saved to your passport.  You then get to go into the virtual reality experience.   It is a lot like going to the Giant theaters, I prefer to sit in the back, the kids like to sit in the front, so we settled on the middle.  The ride is cute, you feel the breeze, and move around in the sleigh.  The kids were totally captivated.

Customizing his sleigh.

Sled making

Once you “arrive” you get to go into another room where you prepare to see Santa.  There is a game that the kids play on another set of IPADs.  My kids didn’t fully understand it, but had fun trying.  Since we don’t get a lot of IPAD time at home it’s a novelty to get to play it, and in this one you are throwing snowballs so it’s neat.  At the end of the game the kids get to see a virtual trophy, and then it’s time to see the big man.

Playing the snowball game.

Santa’s library is beautiful, awe inspiring even.  The kids were super impressed (you can see in the video, which to me makes the whole trip worth it).

Here are my videos:

Santa was great with the kids (even (E) who was very unsure).  We got some funny pictures, and then one keeper (but as you know I often treasure the outtakes).  When you have finished your visit you go through one more door where there is a little gift shop, and you can view and purchase your photo package (which hopefully you did before visiting because it really is the best deal).  That is where you will get your USB with all of the pictures, and projects as well as your printouts, DVD and stuffed animal (while supplies last).

Last but not least, my short assessment, for those who like to get down to the nitty gritty.  Is it worth it?  Would I go again?  Do I recommend it?  Here’s what I’ve responded to those asking on social media.

Bottom line, they have a few kinks to work out, it’s a new attraction.  But, that having been said, I wait on line for Santa in a mall every year behind people and none of us have reservations.  It just a line usually, and nothing to distract.  This had some fun things to do while you wait, and if you bring two adults there’s a playground to play on next to the attraction.  I waited on line my mother chased the kids.  My kids (16m and 4 ½ years) enjoyed the make your own sleigh, my son keeps talking about how his had rockets.  The game in the next room he played and enjoyed, he even told Santa that he won a trophy.

My Favorite Santa Photo

10043920141111_0007

If you go, purchase the $50 package, it is well worth it.  You get pictures of them playing games, the sleigh they design, and with Santa.  Additionally, you never get a private audience with the big man; that too was cool.  The video?  Ill treasure it forever, because how often do you get to year your for year old say “Welcome to the North Pole Too Santa.”  You get to see on the video your child’s face as they first see Santa, which we never get to see.  As an aside, I usually pay $30 at regular Santa to stand in the line in just a mall, this was much cooler.

For more information please visit http://www.westchestersridgehill.com/event/dreamplace-north-pole-adventure/2145445175 to make reservations, and pre-purchase your memory package!

Ladies Night- Fall Wreath Class

Posted on November 12, 2014 by RocklandNYMom Posted in Crafts, Out and about..., Reviews, We're Having a Party .

Disclosure:  This is a sponsored post as I was invited to a class at My Sweet Pea in New City.  All opinions expressed are my own.

Last Thursday I attended the Fall Wreath Making Class at My Sweet Pea in New City.  The class was the first of a series of seasonal Wreaths that will be held for adults at the store on Thursday evenings.  I was excited to attend as I love decorating for the seasons, love crafting, and love a night out with other adults.

We got together to begin the class and we brought a few bottles of wine.  All of the supplies (included in the price of the class) were ready and waiting for us as we got there, including different options for the ribbon, paint, and adornments.  I found this was one of the best parts of the class, because although we all learned the same skills we were able to modify to better fit our design style and personalities.

The smaller craft room at My Sweet Pea ready for class.

Wreath Set up

The group of ladies that we were with were great.  Doreen (our teacher) helped us to get started and even offered other ways of beginning the design if we were having difficulty.  She was very helpful and offered to show us time and time again.  In fact, I had to start over when I wasn’t loving the way it was coming out. Doreen said that its totally normal, happens often and offered suggestions as to how to start again and make it look more like I had envisioned.  The first thing she had us do was paint our monogram letters so that they would be dry by the time we needed to add them at the end of the class.  After that we created the basic shape of our wreaths.

Beginning the burlap process.

Once we got that completed for the wreath (the burlap was really the longest part), Doreen showed us how to make the nice large bows you see all of the time.  She showed us how to do it first free hand and then showed us using a special little gadget called the “bowdabra”.  Each student liked a different look to their bow, some larger and more round, others flatter and smaller.  Doreen patiently walked each one of us through the process until we loved our own bows.

J thinks about what she wants her bow to look like.

Making a perfect Bow

The last part of the wreath making had us adding our embellishments.  We had the monogram letters from earlier on in the project as well as choices in flowers (either burlap or silk).  The finished products are shown below.

They all came out amazingly and I am so proud to display it on my front door.  I cannot wait to make my Christmas Wreath on 11/20.

To register for a class email: MySweetPeaStore@yahooo.com.  I am hooked, I’ll see you there.

Wreaths aren’t your thing?  My Sweet Pea offers other classes for adults and children.  There are adult and children’s cake/cupcake decorating classes as well as some other craft classes for kids.  Have a crafty child who would love a birthday party that follows these lines, My Sweet Holds those too!  The monthly schedule is below.  If a group wants to get together and do a certain craft that you don’t see, give Sheri at My Sweet Pea a call and she can arrange it for you.

Santa Sacs- A Christmas Giveback

Posted on November 7, 2014 by RocklandNYMom Posted in Christmas 2014, Crafts, Reviews, Specialty Items, Thoughts.. .

Disclosure: This is an unsponsored post, all opinions expressed are my own.

One give back mission that we are beginning this year will be centered around these custom “Santa Sacs”. I ordered beautiful classic sacs from Doodlebells, if you are interested order fast.  Malorie has amazing turn around time (especially for such customized and well made items), but orders will fill up quickly and you won’t want to miss out.

The idea behind the sacs is that “Marvin” will bring them early with a letter from Santa which will provide us with directions. The directions are to fill their sac with older toys that they no longer play with or have outgrown.  This will help to make room for the new toys that they will receive and give the kids the opportunity to decide what they can give up.  They will then leave the filled Sacs out for “Marvin” to return to Santa.  Santa will repair and clean up all of the toys to give to boys and girls who would like to have them this year.  This way, removing toys from their collections has a purpose.  I will schedule a “pick up please” appointment to have the toys taken away as a donation to those who would like and enjoy them (of course these toys are still in good shape and hopefully will bring joy to other little boys and girls).

I was looking for sacs that looked like they would belong to the man himself. I wanted them to be classic red and white, with “fur” trim, and to be personalized for each of my children.  I used their monograms to make it more timeless.  Malorie took my request and ran with it.  She also had some pretty awesome ideas for other bags if you are looking for something more customized.  Her abilities like her imagination knows no bounds.  The results are shown below.

The quality of these bags is beyond compare. Much nicer than their mass produced counterparts.  Having them made in a classic design means that they will be able to be used as the kids grow up and they won’t be too childish for quite some time.

I am so excited to debut them this year there is no doubt in my mind that these bags will be another magical reminder of the true spirit of Christmas.

Give “Hope” this Holiday Season

Posted on November 4, 2014 by RocklandNYMom Posted in Good Cause, Photo Obsessed, Reviews .

Disclosure: This is an unsponsored post.  All opinions expressed are my own.

Last week I posted a press release from Studio 3 Photography which announced that their Holiday Mini Sessions this year would be a little different (click here). A quarter of the price for each session booked is being donated to the “Hope for Brian” fund, which benefits Brian a 3 year old with a rare and terrible genetic disease called Atazia-Telangiectasia.

As you know, I am a planner. I like to have advance notice to get things done.  I calculate, I coordinate, I prepare.  This time of year, especially this week, I am crazy nuts.  So, although I planned to take my kids over to Studio 3, I didn’t get around to making an appointment.  Enter Caitlin, who knows me so well that she knows I need to be nagged.  So I received a text from her asking what day and time I would be in this weekend.  I was so swamped I happened to have one time slot on Sunday that worked, I was not prepared in the least which at first freaked me out and then I decided to “let it go” and just go with the flow.  I was lucky enough to have purchased the casual Christmas outfits for my children (told you I was a planner) so I went with those and left the rest to Caitlin.

Before we went I explained to (A) that we were doing a good thing because of the donation. It is a reoccurring theme in our house, all of the time, but we really try to emphasize it during the holiday season.  Almost everything that we do has some sort of give back attached to it so it was perfect.

Here’s how it went. We walked in, and I sat on a couch.  Caitlin took over, making my children laugh, and just be their natural selves :o).  The backdrops for the photos (of which there are three) are just as promised, simple, leaving the opportunity for your family to be the star of the show.  The result is adorable, silly, classic.  Caitlin captured some really amazing shots.  The kids had so much fun, making faces, standing on a box (E’s favorite game was climbing up and down), and trying out the different props.

A rare photo of the process, Caitlin entertains (A) and (E). Disclaimer: These were my cell phone… doesn’t do any of the process justice…

The pictures are my kids, pure kid, and pure gold.  How is Caitlin able to get my squiggly little monkeys to stop and look right at the camera?  Ask her to do her fantastic elephant impression.

What I cannot stop looking at is their eyes. Looking into their eyes in the photographs is like looking into their souls.  Which reminds me of Brian.  As I see my children holding a picture of this beautiful little man, I couldn’t be more positive that finding the time to book my session was the right thing.  Brian’s parents deserve a chance to see those beautiful eyes grow, and to help them to show joy, not pain.  Now I have these amazing pictures for my walls, my Christmas cards, my photobooks, my heart.  I was also able to help their families fight, to continue to find hope.

If you are interested in booking your session with the amazingly talented ladies at Studio 3 contact them at 845-680-8888 and register on  their website www.studio3photographers.com/hope-for-brian/.

Due to Studio 3’s high demand for all events photographic (newborn, wedding, professional, birth story, portraiture, and more) mini-sessions are only available this week 11/3-11/8/14 (all day). If you are on the fence allow me to give you that final push.  Take some time to make a memory and help Brian in the process.

Here is a picture of my babies looking at someone else’s baby- one who needs some “Hope”.
