Cut your own Christmas Trees 2015

Posted on November 10, 2015 by Ashley Carmichael Posted in Christmas 2015, Day Trips, Out and about..., RNYM's Picks .

Christmas Tree Guide 2015

My husband and I started the tradition of cutting our own tree the year we were married. I grew up having a fake Christmas tree, and I put up a big fight when my husband first suggested we cut our own. It is now one of my favorite Christmas traditions. Getting all bundled up, trekking out to find the PERFECT tree, all while sipping on hot cider/cocoa. Each year feels like we are creating a new ‘masterpiece’ of a tree, not just decorating the same old tree, the same old way. And nothing beats the smell of a fresh Christmas tree!

Most farms open up for Christmas Tree cutting the Friday or Saturday after Thanksgiving.
Call the farm or double check their website for opening day and hours.

There are several types of trees to choose from, so be sure to call ahead to ask about the trees available!

The Great Jack O’Lantern Blaze- REVIEW!

Posted on October 16, 2015 by RocklandNYMom Posted in Day Trips, Events, Out and about..., Reviews .

Disclosure:  This is a sponsored post as we were invited to the BLAZE. All opinions expressed are my own. Photos courtesy of Kennedy Grace Photography.

I was so excited to be invited back to The Great Jack O’Lantern Blaze.  We went two years ago (see post) and had a great time, but the kids are bigger and more mature now so I was excited to see their takes on it.

I adore the fall and everything that comes with it.  I also love to do anything as a family that has us outdoors enjoying a nice evening together.  The Great Jack O’Lantern Blaze really fits that bill.View More: http://kennedygracephotography.pass.us/blaze

This time also I took along with me friend and photographer Kate Garland of Kennedy Grace Photography, so that you can REALLY see some of the wonders (my pictures can’t hold a candle to these).

View More: http://kennedygracephotography.pass.us/blaze

We had a blast the last time we attended, but I was so very happy to see that they have made some great improvements as well.

  • Although the terrain is still a little rough in areas and a bit narrow, I was happy to see that in some of the more difficult areas there were rugs laid out which made a stroller much more manageable.  I still suggest either baby-wearing or an easily navigable stroller like a jogger.

  • My children enjoyed the displays last time we were there, but they have added a few VERY child friendly areas that they really loved (dinosaurs, trains and the like).

The kids are OBSESSED with dinosaurs right now.  They loved this!

View More: http://kennedygracephotography.pass.us/blaze

  • They have added TWO more books about the BLAZE that you can purchase at the gift shop that are great. We purchased the one about the Headless Horseman.

The kids with the book we purchased two years ago… They are so adorable.

Reading the Blaze Book

Headless Horseman Book

  • There are some pumpkin stand ups where you can take some silly photos  with your heads through the holes that are eyes, ears, etc.  Our group really liked sticking their heads through the MOUTH of one.

View More: http://kennedygracephotography.pass.us/blaze

The kids being a bit more grown up this year also appreciated the hot apple cider and donuts more, as well as the pumpkin carving area where you can see and learn how they create the BLAZE. Two years ago when we went, (A) wasn’t interested in this process, this year I couldn’t get him away (looking forward to making our own pumpkins this time around).

Although the sessions are sold out, I didn’t feel crowded (even while trying to keep an eye on three young children) which is a nice thing.  Additionally, everyone that was going through when we did had a great sense of humor and helped you to get a chance to see everything, which made it a very nice experience.

Helpful Hints:

  • Bring Jammies to change into.  We went at 7 and didn’t head back home until 9:15.
  • We stopped at a local dollar store on the way and got some “Glow-in-the-Dark” accessories.  These were great because the kiddos enjoyed them, and I knew which children were mine at ALL times.

The kids with their glow sword and wands.

View More: http://kennedygracephotography.pass.us/blaze

  • Use the bathroom before you enter, its the only one at the event, if your kids have to go while you walk, you have to go all the way back .

I just love it when we leave an attraction or event and my children want to talk about it at the end.  In this case, (A) kept thanking me for such a lovely evening, and (E) passed right out in the car with a huge smile on her face.

The Great Jack O’Lantern BLAZE is doing so well and is in such high demand that they have just opened some more times in the evenings.  There is also some availability in early November that would be great to take advantage of as it may be a little less crowded.

Corn Maze Train

Play the game where getting lost is half the fun!!!

  • Bring a picnic lunch to eat in the shaded picnic grove, visit the Susquehanna Mining Company (for an added fee) (we did this when we visited) and play the Corn Maze Game!!
  • Corn Maze Game:  Make it through each maze and find each of the 12 check points.
  • Then visit the 30 foot bouncy pumpkin!

More info:

Restrooms: There are portable restrooms with hand sanitizers for your use.

Pets: Please leave your own pets at home. Of course, service animals are allowed.

Attire: The Corn Mazes are located in an open field. Conditions can be windy or hot. It is always wise to dress in layers for warmth and changeable conditions. Most importantly, we strongly advise sturdy, closed-toe shoes or sneakers. The field is made of DIRT! its best to have old sneakers or boots!

The Mazes are only open weather permitting. Muddy ground conditions after rain storms could force them to stay closed even after the rain has stopped. Please call if you question the weather in our area. If we need to close for the day, a message will be left on the answering machine.

Accessibility: Our Corn Maze is in a real corn field on a real farm. Unfortunately, it is not possible to make them handicapped accessible. – ADDITIONALLY it is better suited for child-wearing than strollers.

For tickets, purchase a ride on the steam train and choose the “Corn Maze” add on.  www.877trainride.com

Money Momma Dining Tip #6

Posted on September 29, 2015 by RocklandNYMom Posted in Food, Money Momma, Out and about..., Reviews .

Disclosure:  This is a sponsored post as we were invited for a meal with Bailey’s North.  All opinions expressed are my own.

Tip #6- Take Advantage of Family Dinner Take-out Specials

Baileys North

Usually Jamie (Money Momma) does these posts but she knows how passionate we are about BBQ, and so we got to review :o)  The tip however, is hers.

Sometimes you just don’t feel like cooking for one reason or another.  At the same time you don’t want to have to get “dressed” and pray that your kids make it through a night out in a restaurant either.  For these exact reasons there are restaurants who have family “dine-out” options that are delicious and affordable (we might just be making you a list of restaurants and which day to look for them).

One such restaurant is Bailey’s North.  Located in Haverstraw, Bailey’s North is an extension of the Baileys restaurant in Orangeburg.  They are a take our only establishment at this time (there are a few small bar tables if you wanted a cute little lunch and the conversation is great so you could do that too).  They offer meal deals almost every day of the week which Chef Dude posts on their Facebook page.

(E) and RNYD check out the menu for next time…

Baileys North Checking the Menu

Once a week (on Wednesdays) Baileys North Features a family dinner special for $24.99 that knocked our socks off.  On the night that we tried it, the special was pulled pork, coleslaw, mac & cheese, salad, and corn soufflé.  When we went to pick it up it was ready for us (no waiting) and we even got to meet Chef Dude!  He is so proud of his product and wants to make everyone so happy that he asked that we be brutally honest and let him know if his recipes needed tweaking.

The fabulous staff at Bailey’s North (minus Chef Dude who declined the paparazzi).

Baileys North Staff

While we were there we picked up a new BBK rub and sauce to try (RNYD loves his BBQ).  We could barely wait to get home to eat.  The car was filled with a mouth watering aroma.

 Our new condiments..Baileys North Purchases

Once unpacked we were ready to dig in.  The pork was perfect.  Not super saucy (read yummy AND not too messy for (E)), or too spicy for (A) who claims to not like “too much spice”.  At the same time, it was flavorful enough to earn praise from RNYD and RNYP (Pop).  The corn soufflé was fabulous (more like a desert than a side), and the coleslaw? WOW! I don’t like coleslaw and I practically ate it all by myself.

Ohhh…. the corn soufflé.

Baileys NorthCorn Souffle

Baileys NOrth coleslaw

The whole family smiled from ear to ear through dinner and not much was said unless it was a compliment or someone asking for more.  Not only was everyone full and happy, but with 5 of us eating, we still had food enough for two days of leftovers.  As soon as dinner was over I “Liked” their Facebook page so that I can keep up with the current specials.  Then, I invited my friends to do the same.

Baileys North Emmie Eat

We loved the food so much that I have already looked into their catering menu for RNYD’s 40th Birthday (in March).

A small side-not that we found interesting (some Rockland History), Bailey’s North is in an old butcher shop.  Due to its history not only can you have them make you some fabulous meat, if you want to BBQ on your own you can purchase the meat from them.  They sell the same cuts that they cook if you prefer to do it yourself.

The Great Jack O’Lantern BLAZE

Posted on September 21, 2015 by RocklandNYMom Posted in Day Trips, Out and about..., Reviews .

Disclosure:  This is a sponsored post as we were invited to come see the BLAZE.  All opinions expressed are my own.

Two years ago (October 2013) I took the kiddies to the Great Jack O’Lantern BLAZE (see review).  Little (E) was months old and in a stroller.  (A) was 3 at the time and had a blast.  I have always had it in the back of my mind to return when the kids were a bit older and this year we were given the opportunity.  I AM PSYCHED!!!

If you are interested in attending you can check out their official website to read more about it or purchase tickets.  It sells out fast, so purchase as soon as you decide to go.  Questions?  Our previous review has some helpful hints for you. READ about it here!

I have already started reading them the great little book that we purchased two years ago when we visited.  I love adding a  little literacy to an event or attraction.  Then when we get back I plan to use this as an opportunity to lead into our PUMPKIN CARVING!!!  Last time we went, we had to carve 3 pumpkins (A) was so excited about the BLAZE.

Reading the Blaze Book

Would you like to visit the BLAZE?? We have a set of 4  tickets to giveaway!!!! Like, comment and share on Facebook to enter, or just comment here.  Drawing will be held on 9/26/15.

Take the Time…

Posted on August 2, 2015 by RocklandNYMom Posted in Day Trips, Out and about..., RNYM Savings!, Travel .

Disclosure: This is a sponsored post. All opinions expressed are my own.

As the kids grow (so very quickly) I begin to realize how very important it is to take vacations. It’s important to stop and unwind (which is almost impossible for me), it’s important to make memories, it’s important to build family relationships by spending quality time together. Last year we did a week of day trips, super fun, but not so relaxing… This year, I figured (E) would still be too young, and didn’t plan anything. I am regretting that. Next year, I am planning something no matter what.

That’s one reason that I am so glad to have met Scott Walters. He is a local advisor who knows and understands family travel (he travels extensively with his own wife and three children). He is a Disney EXPERT and knows about so much more. Scott’s skills are free to his clients and this month he is doing one better for RNYM readers. He understands how important it is to take your family vacation so he is offering an incentive for booking your dream vacation today. For the month of August, you can not only plan and make the vacation of your dreams a reality, you can earn money back too!!!

Making memories is often better than buying “stuff”. Having experiences with your children can foster endless possibilities. This is where I come in.

As a travel advisor, I help families get out and see the world. From cruises to resorts to a weekend getaway, my ability to find the offerings that your family will enjoy is my passion. I bring people and places together.

My website is www.goawayoftentravel.com and my email is scott@goawayoftentravel.com. I am reachable by phone at 845-558-1225. My Facebook page is at Scott at Go Away Often Travel.

Use the code RNYM to receive up to 4% back on your booking.

*Airfare is not included in this offer. Gift card will be sent after final payment is received. In the case of cruise or resort, you may receive an on board or resort credit. Booking must be made by August 31, 2015 and travel begin by June 30, 2016. Other restrictions may apply and offer may be withdrawn at any time.

I look forward to working with you as I treat your vacation like my vacation.
