Musicianship- A Lesson well Learned

Posted on July 8, 2021 by RocklandNYMom Posted in Classes, Classes for Kids, Opportunities, Out and about..., Photography, Reviews, RNYM's Picks, Things to Do!, Thoughts.. .

As you well know, (A) has been taking drum lessons with the New City School of Music for 4 years now.  He has blossomed into a great, versatile drummer.  He has been a full remote student since COVID hit, and we were so excited to report last month that in person performances are back.  Despite being able to learn online, and participate in virtual performances as well as performing for NYSSMA this spring, he has really missed having opportunities to showcase his talents live.  As mentioned in my previous article he has two opportunities upcoming to do so.

The first was an outdoor recital this past weekend.  These organized performances (which happen twice a year) are free of charge to parents, family members and friends to attend.  Sam and the music school staff were able to book Zukor Park, and get the mobile bandstand stage for the students to perform on.  The usual performance space is indoors, and although it’s awesome, this was a really nice opportunity.  He hasn’t played live outdoors yet.  As a musician it can pose a whole new set of obstacles to overcome.

Having been away from the scene for a year and a half, he was understandably nervous.  He was in the last group of the day (NCSM breaks performers into groups so you don’t have to be there all day, although you could if you wanted to) and when we arrived we learned that he was closing out the whole performance!  Super cool, especially since he always chooses something fun and upbeat.  I brought my good camera to snap some pics, intended for this article.

When it was his turn, (A) got settled on stage and arranged the kit the way he likes it and the music started.  He had difficulty hearing the music and missed his entrance.  For most kids, especially those with little experience it would have totally thrown them off.  For a moment I didn’t dare breathe, afraid that he might become embarrassed, stop, I am not even sure what I was afraid of.  I underestimated him. He simply listened, counted and jumped in.  You would never know.

At the end is where he really shocked me.  He was feeling it, and proud, he knew he overcame a huge moment.  He finished the song and threw his hands and sticks up in celebration.  All in attendance cheered and I snapped a quick (mediocre) photo.

He then came off stage and his sister so proud of him, threw herself around him in congratulations.  I missed it.  Know who didn’t miss it?  The professional photographer that NCSM hired to take photos of the day, (Latham Photography) at no charge to us students.  He captured all of it, and super well.  Two days after the performance we received our complimentary link to download the edited photos and I was floored.  Below are HIS photos of this awesome event.

Did I mention they even went around and took family photos? Here’s our group <3

Needless to say, I am one happy momma.  (A) has shown so much growth even in adversity, overcame a little blip in his first live performance in a year and a half, entertained the crowd and has set a new standard for his next performance.  Which will be at the ROCK AND ROLL HALL OF FAME in Cleveland Ohio in August, another amazing opportunity afforded us by The New City School of Music.  I look forward to reporting back and updating you all on that experience as well. <3

If you are interested in hearing more about The New City School of Music and what they have to offer, give them a call.  We as always appreciate you mentioning you heard it here.  Their current promotion is as follows:

It’s not too late to sign up for music lessons! *** July Music Special *** Get Free Registration and your 1st thirty minute lesson FREE if you enroll by July 6th!
Fight the Summer boredom and let’s make some music! Enroll by 8/1 and get Free Registration and your 1st thirty minute lesson FREE!

Take the Trip…

Posted on January 22, 2020 by RocklandNYMom Posted in Birthdays, Health and Wellness, Money Momma, Opportunities, Reviews, RNYM's Picks, Self Care, Services, Things to Do!, Thoughts.., Travel .

Disclosure:  This is a sponsored post.  All opinions expressed are my own.

A little while ago, I posted about how I am done giving gifts of “things” and am moving toward gifts of time and experience.  I am about to turn 40. I don’t only believe in time and experience for others, I do for myself too.  I’ve always dreamed of traveling, especially to Europe, but everywhere.  For one reason or another it just hasn’t happened.  Well with 40 knocking on my door I decided to do something about it.

EDIT TO ADD:  I wrote and was supposed to post this article early fall, but I am kind of glad that I didn’t.  Due to normal “Life” situations, I am more glad than ever that we got a chance to do Disney this year as well as to have taken this trip myself.  I do not know when the next time I will be able to take the family on a trip or go myself might be able to happen.  Those who know me know that I am not exaggerating, my new advice…..When you have the chance, Do it.  I intend to try to figure out how to continue to travel, and bring the family along, but its going to take a whole lot more work now.

Due to unforeseen circumstances RNYD was not available to travel (which is cool anyway cause he’s much more of a home body), so I begged my bestie Michelle to come with me.  I gave her a list of places on my bucket list and let her choose.  I also wanted to hit up a cruise if possible because I have never done one.  She was game, and she choose Greece.  Perfect for a cruise, and really one of my top two trips.

We picked a cruise and booked it, since it left and returned to Rome and neither of us knew when we would be back, we decided to take 2 days to explore there as well.

Here’s what I’ve learned.

  1.  I will never book a trip with a travel agent other than Scott Walters (sorry dudes say what you will, he’s bailed me out 2x now).
  2. Cruises are great because you don’t have to pack up your stuff every day to move, you have a home base.
  3. You can make friends on cruises, which is neat for when you are done sightseeing for the day you can meet for dinner/drinks/dancing later.
  4. Get the drink package (just saying)
  5. Try all the different foods
  6. Clarks are the best sandals ever (and yes you can find some that don’t look like your grandmothers shoes).
  7. Greece is REALLY HOT in the summer so May or September may be better.
  8. I AM OBSESSED WITH TRAVEL.

At each of the islands we went to Scott sent us 2-3 excursions that he thought we would like based on our “profiles” and we chose 1-2 for each.  The tours that we took were so complete that I actually don’t think we missed anything, BUT we didn’t have tons of time so it was more like a taste test, I may have a list of places that I’d like to get back to if I ever check off my list the other trips I want to take.

Travel Agent Extraordinaire Scott Walters helped  me out immensely on this trip, and I am so grateful.  I have just reached out to him again, about a possible trip for 2021, that I would like to start saving for.  I am so excited, and hopeful that we can make it happen despite our challenges.  He’s been super helpful in understanding and helping us with the physical needs of our family, and I am hoping that his expert advise will help us to be able to make the trip happen for our whole family.

A full service travel agent specializing in family vacations to amazing destinations. From simple weekend getaways to multi generational once in a lifetime bucket list filling journeys, Go Away Often Travel can get you there. It’s YOUR VACATION, let me do the work!  Worth noting here that I always thought I couldn’t afford a travel agent.  Turns out that you don’ t pay one, they are paid by the people they book your trip with.  The few times I have reached out to him to see if he should be consulted about a trip and he couldn’t help me with a deal, he encouraged me to book on my own to save the money.

Nickel-O Farms- Review! #RNYMBucketList

Posted on May 13, 2019 by RocklandNYMom Posted in Camps, Classes, Classes for Kids, Day Trips, Opportunities, Out and about..., Reviews, RNYM's Picks, Things to Do! .

Disclosure:  This is a sponsored post as Nickel-O Farms is a directory member.  All opinions expressed are my own.

Pleased to be checking items off of our #RNYMBucketList this early in the year, here is installment 1.  Horseback riding.  Its a great skill, one I loved as a kid at camp, and my brother even pursued.  So excited that I was able to share it with my kids, that they weren’t scared (actually LOVED it), found a great place to go, and look forward to going again.

RNYM recently had the pleasure to begin working with Nickel-O Farms. They have joined our camps directory, and became one of our spring/summer bucket list options as one thing my kiddos wanted to do was to learn how to ride a horse.  They always enjoy the “pony” rides at events we attend, but wanted something more.

Nickel-O has lessons, as well as scouting events, camp, and animals available for birthday parties. It is located right in West Nyack and Lisa (the owner) is more than sweet.

We headed over for a riding lesson with the kids and didn’t know what to expect. We had been told that long pants and boots or something with a hard sole would be best so that’s what we wore.  Safety is most important at Nickel-O so the first thing we did was get fitted for helmets.  Then we were brought over to Sara who introduced us to our horse for the day, Small Bear.

I thought that it would be a little lighter than it was but the kids were thrown right in (I’m glad) and (A) was taught how to walk Small Bear Bear right over to the stables. After a few pointers (A) was able to get right onto him.  I figured (having literally no background in riding other than the lessons we had at my sleep away camp when I was 10) that they would ride around a few times and they would get the hang of it but nope.  They did a ton!!!

After a few basic lessons on the reigns while going around the corral I was shocked that Sara started explaining to (A) how to steer Small Bear to do a zig zag through the cones. Without a lead line or anything!  It took him a few seconds to get the hang of it and he was doing it on his own!!!  I honestly would have been impressed if we stopped right there.  They had already blown my expectations away, but then Sara brought (A) and Small Bear into the adjoining corral.

There they worked on walking over obstacles, including cavaleties in the ground, and also a bridge. THEN THEY GOT TO JOG!  This was the highlight of the experience if you ask (A) or (E).  They LOVED it!!!

When ½ hour was up (A) was instructed how to get off Small Bear ‘like a cowboy’ and came out all smiles. At this time (E) was heading in for her lesson.  Being 5 I assumed it would be drastically different.  NOPE!  She did all the SAME things that (A) had done (but with a lead line held by Sara).  She too enjoyed every moment, and Sara told us at the end that for most kids her age they would have only started with 15 minutes, but that she did so well that she got to do the whole ½ hour.  When it was completed she was instructed how to walk Small Bear back to the cross ties and hook him up.

At this point Sara told them a bit about how to care for a horse, and about how riding lessons are about more than just the “riding” it’s also caring for the horse, and having a relationship with them where they trust you. You have to take care of them.  The kids got to brush him a bit, and were given a lesson on the difference between the grooming tools.

At this time I pulled the kids aside to ask them a few questions about the experience (it’s really cool that they are old enough to do that now). Both reported that they would LOVE to do it again, or go for a trail ride in the future.  They also reported that they LOVED jogging, and recommend that others try it.

Nickel-O was a fabulous experience for my guys. They wanted terribly to learn more about horseback riding, and to do more than be led around a pony area.  This was the second item we were able to cross off of our #RNYMBucketlist.  If you are interested in going for a ride, camp, lessons, a scouting event, birthday party or anything else, please contact Lisa Owens at:

Dear Dads… You’re Welcome

Posted on May 8, 2018 by RocklandNYMom Posted in Opportunities, Party, RNYM's Picks, Uncategorized .

Disclosure:  This is a sponsored post.

Ok, so, this weekend is Mother’s Day.  I know, I know, it came on so fast.  We at RocklandNYMom really value our parents (grandparents, caregivers), and know how much you put into everything that you do and so first of all, please accept our greatest PRAISE, and THANK YOU!  YOU GUYS ROCK!!!

That being said- I polled the Moms on our page to see what they really wanted for Mother’s Day, then went out and attempted to make it happen with some AMAZING giveaways that we are doing this week.  I am NOT able to provide for everyone but we do have 5 fabulous days of fun.  What do I have for you?  The list of items that were most requested by Moms, and where you can find them.  You’re welcome.

Surprise, surprise, Moms want to be PAMPERED.  I think I can speak for most parents in general, when I say that when it comes to doing something special for ourselves, we hesitate, but today we speak specifically about moms (so Dads no offense we will get to you next month).  So Moms asked for things that they should be doing for themselves (when possible) but are afraid to ask for:

  1. To have their nails done
This one I don’t actually have a recommendation for, there are SO many.  But I would love to be able to go monthly, with no GUILT to do this, especially with the warm weather coming, pedicures are a must.
  2. To get their hair highlighted (dyed) and cut.
I am actually giving one hair gift certificate away this week to Hair by Andrea www.hairbyandreanyack.com as well as an adorable tote, and a hair straightener.
Hair by andrea 2Not only can you make an appointment to go in and see Andrea- but she has a special for new clients you may want to take advantage of for your gift $85 for a full head of highlights and a cut.  She also makes house calls.

  3. For a Massage
I don’t have one to give away this time, but word on the street is that you can contact two FABULOUS places to book one:
Nellie Grossenbacher- Who can be reached on Facebook or text (201) 523-3907The Wholeness Center- https://www.wholenesscenterny.com/ who also has some other fantastic pampering services like facials with Carrie ElAmir (my favorite)
    Facial Progress
wholeness center mothers day specials 2018
  4. A night away
Here’s something neat, Moms asked for one night away, in a hotel, even a STAYCATION.  Cool idea if you ask me, send her with a friend or leave the kids with grandparents and go together.  Some me/alone/couple time is ALWAYS a great idea.
  5. Someone to professionally clean the house
I do actually have one to give away this week.  Michelle of Dutchmen Cleaning who cleans my house has kindly offered to give a Momma a break and given us an all natural cleaning gift basket with a gift certificate to give away.
    dutchmen-cleaning-card
Not our lucky winner?  That’s ok, you can call and give Mom some time off by calling (845) 742- 9592 and mention us, Michelle will give you $10 of your cleaning.
  6. A night off of cooking
Luigi O’Gradys has just what you need to pamper mom and give her some time off, be it breakfast, brunch, lunch, or dinner Michelle and her staff can make anything happen (if you give them some lead time).  Give them a Call: (845) 735-9110 **MUST CALL BY FRIDAY**
    Luigis Logo
  7. Something witty
Our very first giveaway this week is from Shine Bright Co.  Its an ADORABLE gift bag with some super witty gifts inside.
Have a Mom or Grandma with a FABULOUS sense of humor?  Take a look and see what they’ve got!  https://shinebritecompany.com/Shine bright basket
  8. Professional Photos- Photos of Us
Moms are constantly taking photos, documenting EVERYTHING.  But we are TOO hesitant to jump in front of the camera. Also, it seems SO frivolous to ask for professional photos, but we would LOVE them.  We have a directory for that CLICK HERE.  Any of these talented photographers are ready and willing to document your special family moments.

In fact, two of them have donated gift certificates to pamper Mommies this week.

  9. Something Home Made
Jill’s Ceramics has a wide variety or fabulous thing you can make for mom.  We made hand print Vases.
Vase 2Vase 1We also happen to have an event on 5/18 for parents to go and be creating (there will be wine) and one on 6/9 to make Father’s Day Gifts (told you we were including you guys!)  YOu can RSVP to these events by emailing Rocklandnymom@yahoo.com or checking out the Facebook events.

  10. MAD MONEY
And I don’t mean cash.  Know why?  People give me cash or a check and then I go and do something RESPONSIBLE with it.  Mad money, Mommas wanted a gift certificate to a home store, or their favorite clothing store, or jewelery store.  Somewhere NOT RESPONSIBLE, but guilt free.  Then, give her the child free time to go and use it- want to really make an impression?  Ask her to see what she got, and then pretend you ADORE it ;o)Pick her Poison and go with it.
Does she love to DECORATE? Then we suggest- Homegoods, Or Kirklands
JEWELS more her thing? Bourghol Brothers in Congers
Living with a STYLE MAVEN (that means she likes clothes)? Macys- Lord and Taylor- Nordstrom- Runway on the Hudson- or Ann Taylor (or the Loft) will do the trick!

Little Drummer Boy

Posted on September 18, 2017 by RocklandNYMom Posted in Classes, Opportunities, Reviews, RNYM Savings! .

Disclosure:  This is a sponsored post, all opinions expressed are my own.

My son just started drum lessons.  He had such a blast while at The New City School of Music with Andrew (READ HERE), that he asked and asked to go back, and here we are!!!  I love this because not only is (A) getting into something that he loves, but I can also show all of you sneak peeks into what being a student at The New City School of Music is like.  I will periodically update you on his progress with Andrew and the fabulous staff here.

WCFF2016_Winner

Today for his first (real) lesson I must say that again I am impressed at how organized they are.  There was a sign welcoming (A) to his first lesson, paperwork all set, and his very own binder for his music papers.  There was also a little questionnaire for him to complete about why he is here.  He LOVED all that individualized attention.

Drum Lesson 1

(A) remembered much of what he had already learned, and Andrew jumped right in with the same beat that they had been working on when (A) had come to the trial lesson.  I adore the way Andrew explains things to (A).  He is patient and makes sure that he understands before moving on.   This is soooo important for a child of (A)’s age who is so impressionable, and inquisitive.  Andrew was able to correct many of the minor body movements that (A) needed to be more “economical” with his movements.  Then they got into a new beat.

Drum Lesson 3

When (A) started getting a little mixed up between his hands- he even found a fun and engaging way to help him practice at home.  He got his first homework assignment and is SOOOO looking forward to showing Andrew next week what he can do.

Drum Lesson 5

Now the weekend after his first lesson- (A) has successfully practiced for 10 minutes every night and can’t wait to show Andrew what he can do on Monday <3 I can’t wait either.

Don’t forget that for the rest of the month we have a special deal for those who would like to register for lessons–
