Where to Shop Local this Holiday Season

Posted on November 27, 2015 by Ashley Carmichael Posted in Ashley's Lists, Christmas 2015, Day Trips, Out and about..., Thoughts.. .

Disclosure:  This is an unsponsored post.  RNYM believes that you should #shopsmall #shoplocal when possible.  All opinions expressed are our own.

As you begin shopping for the holiday season, consider shopping locally and supporting our community! There are many great local options where you can find items tailored toward your specific needs.  Money spent locally helps keep our small businesses open, and creates a strong community.

One of the things we love here at RNYM is that the smaller businesses tend to have specialty items you can’t find anywhere else.  These items are often of better quality and become very special to those you give them to.  We asked the community for input and here is a great list of places to support this holiday season.  We decided that because of the overwhelming response that we would include local restaurants etc. in another post.

RNYM 2015 Holiday Photos!

Posted on November 24, 2015 by RocklandNYMom Posted in Christmas 2015, Photography, Reviews, RNYM's Picks .

Disclosure:  This is a sponsored post.  All opinions expressed are my own.  WE HAD TO SHARE OUR #ROCKLANDNYMOMTREETIME2015 PHOTOS WITH YOU!!!

ONCE a year I ask that RNYD take a family photo with me and the kids.  Its tough for me too, I don’t really like the focus to be on me.  This year we decided to do it at Christmas.  Kate Garland of Kennedy Grace Photography was holding sessions at Emerich Tree Farm in Warwick and it was a perfect time.  We also wanted to make sure our pup (Duncan) could be there, so the outdoor session was PERFECTION!

One of the things I love about Kate is that she always has great ideas for places to take photos.  This tree farm was so perfect, I couldn’t have asked for anything better.  The kids got to fun around and be themselves, and so did Duncan.  It was beautiful and relaxing for the whole family.

I will let these do the talking:

Due to the popular demand of her sessions at the tree farm, she was forced to add 5 sessions last weekend.  Now that those are over and people have seen them, they have asked for more.  Here she goes.  Kate has added new sessions Called “Holidays at Home“.  These sessions will focus on how your family prepares.  She will come and take photos of your family decorating the tree, making cookies, wrapping presents, putting up lights, dining around the table.. whatever you would like.  These #lifestyle sessions promise to be special, memorable and really document your family dynamic.  Check out her Webpage for more info http://www.kennedygracephotography.com/

Holiday Giving with St. Jude 2015

Posted on November 12, 2015 by RocklandNYMom Posted in Christmas 2015, Good Cause .

Disclosure:  This is an unsponsored post.  We love kids, and kids charities… This is a great way to get some lovely gifts, as well as make a difference this holiday season.

St Jude Logo

Did you know that every holiday season more than 70 of America’s best-known and most-loved companies and brands implement holiday fundraising campaigns featuring exciting new online engagement programs, in-store giving opportunities and specialty merchandise to help raise funds and awareness for St. Jude, the global leader in finding cures and saving children with cancer and other deadly diseases?

What a great way to celebrate the season, by giving gifts that also give more than meets the eye.  These gifts include hope, care, love, and stress relief.

The items available can be found on the St. Jude Giftshop – http://giftshopmedia.sig-ad.com/#.  The site features St. Jude branded products which 100% of the proceeds go to St. Jude Children’s Hospital, a collection of items by St. Jude celebrity friend items like Daisy Fuentes, and items from St. Jude Thanks and Giving campaign partners like Kmart, Ann Taylor, Kay Jewelers, Williams-Sonoma, HomeGoods, New York & Company (the Limited), Brooks Brothers, TUMI, HSN, Pottery Barn, West Elm, DVF and more.

All proceeds from the merchandise sales support St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, where families never receive a bill from St. Jude for treatment, travel, housing or food – because all a family should worry about is helping their child live. 2015 marks the 11th annual St. Jude Thanks and Giving campaign.  It’s an unprecedented union of celebrities, media and more than 70 of the nation’s leading brands and companies that ask consumers to donate while they shop during the holiday season to help St. Jude provide cutting-edge treatment and pursue visionary research. Created by Marlo, Terre, and Tony Thomas – the children of St. Jude founder Danny Thomas – the campaign has grown into an annual holiday tradition that has raised more than $587 million thanks to tremendous public support. Throughout the months of November and December, consumers shopping where the St. Jude logo is displayed can also make a donation at checkout or purchase specialty items, like those featured in the Holiday Preview, that benefit St. Jude.

Some great suggestions include (but are not limited to, check the site for full details):

Hot Chocolate Tube Mix– Perfect for a stocking stuffer, or add on for a teacher gift.  Also, makes an adorable add on for those “Night before Christmas” boxes I have seen.

Coa Coa Tube
Key Holder – adorned with a space for a photo (who can get enough of those), space for several keys (so they don’t get lost on the counter anymore), and a timeless quote.

Key Holder
Caterpillar Tunnel– Something every child loves, crawling through a tunnel.  Adorable and so developmentally helpful.  I have used these in my living room during the winter months, and adapted them to several different birthday party ideas through the years. I can’t get enough of mine.

Caterpillar tubeStacking Train– (A) and (E) have had hours of fun with a train just like this one.  I wish I had known at the time that I could have purchased one that would also benefit St. Jude.

Cut your own Christmas Trees 2015

Posted on November 10, 2015 by Ashley Carmichael Posted in Christmas 2015, Day Trips, Out and about..., RNYM's Picks .

Christmas Tree Guide 2015

My husband and I started the tradition of cutting our own tree the year we were married. I grew up having a fake Christmas tree, and I put up a big fight when my husband first suggested we cut our own. It is now one of my favorite Christmas traditions. Getting all bundled up, trekking out to find the PERFECT tree, all while sipping on hot cider/cocoa. Each year feels like we are creating a new ‘masterpiece’ of a tree, not just decorating the same old tree, the same old way. And nothing beats the smell of a fresh Christmas tree!

Most farms open up for Christmas Tree cutting the Friday or Saturday after Thanksgiving.
Call the farm or double check their website for opening day and hours.

There are several types of trees to choose from, so be sure to call ahead to ask about the trees available!

Holiday Mini-sessions are in!!!

Posted on October 19, 2015 by RocklandNYMom Posted in Christmas 2015, Photo Obsessed, RNYM's Picks .

Disclosure: This is a sponsored post.

Holiday Mini-sessions are a great way to have professional photos done  of the family. They are shorter and more affordable than regular sessions….BUT they go fast. Here are the offerings of our directory members for this holiday season (stay tuned to see our session)! Book them while they last!!!

If you are a first-timer and are unsure how to navigate your session please feel free to reach out.  Additionally, if you visit our directory page, there are reviews for almost every photographer (one is in the works) with more samples of their work.

The most important things to consider are:

  1.  Type of photos- do you want outdoor/lifestyle photos or do you prefer studio/portrait type photos?
  2. Budget- what is the total budget you are working with?  Some sessions are all inclusive, while others are a-la carte.
  3. Purpose- are these photos just for holiday cards? Is this the photo you will be putting above your fireplace for years to come?  Will they be gifts for family members?

As always, if you would like to add a makeup application with our favorite artist- Denise Ruis- you are able to take advantage of great savings.  Make sure that you mention RocklandNYMom to do so.
