Posted on November 18, 2016 by Ashley Carmichael Posted in Contests, Uncategorized .

sparkle-logo

Last year we were invited to visit SPARKLE! for the first time, (read our full review here) and we loved it! A great way to get into the Christmas Spirit and spend time with family.

Boscobel is located on scenic Route 9D in Garrison New York just one mile south of Cold Spring and directly across the river from West Point. Each December they host SPARKLE! A Dazzling Celebration of the season.

Guests roam the grounds gazing at Christmas lights, enjoying time with family while getting into the Christmas Spirit.  Mr. & Mrs. Santa Claus will be in the Sparkle Garden, the beautiful Sparkle Queen Stilt Walker will roam the grounds, Ice Carving Demonstrations, Magician Margaret Steele, and The Libby Richman Jazz Trio and “Puppet Power!” with internationally renowned ventriloquist Jonathan Geffner will be returning again this year. However, each evening’s attractions differ, so be sure to plan your visit by checking the complete schedule at Boscobel.org.

At the very heart of Sparkle is the 1804 mansion itself. Awash in the glow of candlelight and elegantly decorated for receiving visitors, indoor Twilight Tours are ongoing every evening during Sparkle from 4:30pm through 7:30pm.

Boscobel sparkle

To add to this year’s Sparkle festivities, on Saturday, December 10, from 6-8pm, WHUD’s Morning Show cohost Kacey will be on site along with the WHUD Family Fun Crew and Hudson the Bear. There will be photo opportunities, prizes and raffles. Don’t miss the fun!

Boscobel’s Executive Director Steve Miller says, “Boscobel’s board, staff and volunteers are delighted to welcome visitors from near and far to its 4th annual Sparkle event. These festive, family-focused evenings celebrate the season of goodwill, plus all that is special about one of America’s great historic mansions. From our breathtaking exterior views to our lavish 1800’s interiors – there is nothing quite as magical as Boscobel during the holidays.”

Good news for those who want to visit Sparkle via MetroNorth, as well as patrons and residents of Cold Spring and Beacon: the Cold Spring Trolley (sponsored by Putnam County Tourism) will run a shuttle every half hour between 5pm and 9:30pm with stops at the Cold Spring Station, Main Street Cold Spring, Boscobel and Main Street Beacon on all Sparkle dates. One-way fare is $2/Adult and $1/Senior.

Sparkle couldn’t shine as brightly without the support of its major sponsors:
NewYork-Presbyterian/Hudson Valley Hospital, Hudson Valley Federal Credit Union, Offit Capital, Entergy, Central Hudson and Putnam County Tourism, as well as The Greenwich Tent Company, Garrison Tree, SK Electric, Chronogram.com, ExploreTheHudsonValley.com and LocalPutnam.com.
Sparkle will again offer a selection of food for purchase on site from Hudson Hil’s Café & Market of Cold Spring who will prepare fresh sandwiches, chili, soup and more to help warm guests as they enjoy this outdoor, all-weather, illumination event.

Sparkle takes place the first three Fridays and Saturdays in December:
2nd & 3rd, 9th &10th and 16th & 17th
5pm-9pm

There are two ticket levels available: Grounds Only and Grounds Plus. The Grounds Plus ticket includes a Twilight Tour. (Twilight Tours are by advance reservation only. Space is limited and they do sell out quickly!) Tickets are on sale now at Boscobel.org.

Learning to Swim Like A Fish!

swim-like-a-fish

This past summer W and S really began to enjoy swimming. The summer started off with S wearing his puddle jumper, and W scared to go under water. But the summer ended with both boys jumping off the diving board, and swimming underwater. I decided to look into swim lessons for the fall and winter to make sure they continued to be comfortable in the water, but also learn proper swim techniques.

Swim like a fish has class options for Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Saturday and Sundays, with several amazing instructors. They hold lessons at the Hilton Double Tree in Nanuet from September through May, with options to do private, semi private and group lessons. The boys are currently taking a semi-private class with Stephanie, and I couldn’t be happier.

We chose to do a semi-private lesson for 2 reasons – 1. The boys are able to swim together and learn from each other 2. It saves me from having to fit 2 days of swim class into our already jam packed schedules. The lessons are 30 minutes long, which seems to be the perfect amount of time to keep their focus, even after a long day at school. The boys take turns working one on one with Stephanie. Another part I love is that the pool is typically quiet with only one other instructor teaching lessons at the same time.

S was very nervous the first day of class and refused to swim. Stephanie did not pressure him to get in the pool, or force him in. She let S watch W and made a deal with S to try to get in the pool the following week, and he did!

Stephanie is very patient. Taking the time to explain arm/leg motions and breathing techniques in ways the boys can understand. (Frog Kicks, Ice cream scoops, clap and push) She even takes a second to explain to me why she is using certain swimming aides (flippers, kickboard, noodle etc) and how they are helping them with to learn correct form and timing.

The boys have had 5 lessons so far and I can already see their technique improving and their confidence building. Stephanie even suggested that they start coming for individual private lesson because they are progressing so well! I’m excited to see how their skills will develop over the next few weeks! Stay tuned for an update 🙂

The Great Jack O’Lantern Blaze is one of my most favorite fall traditions! Last year, tickets sold out quickly and we missed our chance, we were so disappointed.  So, I was ecstatic when we were able to visit this year!  The Blaze was bigger and better than I remembered, and the boys were amazed! When we finished the walk, W and S were begging to go through again!

The Great Jack O’Lantern Blaze®, is the Hudson Valley’s biggest all-ages Halloween extravaganza!
The walk-through experience lights up the wooded pathways, orchards, and gardens of historic Van Cortlandt Manor in Croton-on-Hudson, N.Y., where a small team of artists hand-carves more than 7,000 jacks and elaborate pumpkin sculptures.

img_8108

This year visitors will delight in Blaze favorites, such as eight-foot-tall working jack-o’lanterns-in-the-box and life-size dinosaurs, and be dazzled by more pumpkin power than ever before! New additions include a plus-sized color-changing star show at the Pumpkin Planetarium, a Pumpkin Promenade, and an 80-foot-long Pumpkin Zee Bridge — complete with a sea serpent swimming in the Croton River.

img_8106

Tickets are selling out fast, and new dates have been added through Thanksgiving weekend! Be sure to act fast! Adults, $20; Children 3-17, $16  (Saturdays $25, $20) FREE for children under 3 + members.
