Chris Kissik Painting and Construction to The Rescue!

Posted on February 8, 2016 by RocklandNYMom Posted in Reviews, RNYM Savings!, RNYM's Picks, Services, Uncategorized .

Disclosure:  This is a sponsored post.  All opinions expressed are my own.

What do you do when your friend calls you with a Home Improvement DIY emergency?  A friend who you have known for your whole life, one that you want to be happy?  One who happens to be just as anal retentive as you are?  You have to recommend someone that you can trust.  Someone that you know will show up when called (that’s one of the biggest hurdles is it not?), who will treat their home like their very own.  For me that person was Chris Kissik of Chris Kissik Painting and Construction.

Chris Kissek

Well, that is exactly what happened.  One of my very best friends for years gave me a call in a panic.  She had FINALLY been able to update her bathroom, things were coming along well, and then the shelf in the shower happened.  It was crooked and spaced strangely and she was heartbroken.

Chris Kissik Tile ACK 2

Chris Kissik TIle ACK

Chris was part of the crew who worked on my bathroom a year and a half ago, and our paths have crossed multiple times.  So when my friend called me with a tile emergency I knew just who to call.

I explained to Chris that we had a DIY 911 he was happy to go over and take a look, and ultimately fix the mistake.

He went over and calmed my friend down immediately.  They made an appointment and she went to go and get the items that he needed.  Here’s what I love… Some contractors would have walked in and then walked away.  It wasn’t a large job, it was fixing a home DIY.  There wasn’t a lot of money in it, and not a ton of glory in it.  He didn’t give her a ridiculous quote because he didn’t “feel like” doing it, not once did he think, “this isn’t worth my time.’  He was her hero.

Chris Kissik Tile Fixed 2

CHris Kissik Tile Fixed 1He fixed the shelf.  Its perfect.  I will tell you what, she will call him again and so will I.  Chris is licensed in Rockland and isn’t afraid of a job no matter how large or how small.  I have a laundry list of things he will be working on for me this summer ( I am sure he can’t wait).

I may kick myself for letting you all in on this great secret because he may end up being so busy that he can’t work for me anymore but you should know.

As an added bonus if you visit out Savings for RNYM Readers page you will see that mentioning our site also earns you a discount on his services.

Meet Sacred Skin Wellness

Posted on December 21, 2015 by RocklandNYMom Posted in Reviews, Services, Uncategorized .

Disclosure:  This is a sponsored post.  All opinions expressed are my own.

As you may have seen, this past small business Saturday I went back to Sacred Skin Wellness for my second Hydra-Facial.  Yep, I was so relaxed and had such a nice time that I returned for a second treatment, and have since made an appointment for a third.  It was when making the third appointment that I realized that I had told you all about my great experience before introducing you to the women behind the experience.

Sacred Skin 1

Meet Ariana, Meri, Michelle, and Carrie.  Three amazing women on a mission to help others.  Yes, Sacred Skin Wellness is MUCH, MUCH more than just a ¨Facial, or a massage¨.  If you come to Sacred Skin Wellness, expect to become a family member, because that’s how they treat you.  You are never just another ¨client¨.

These ladies pride themselves on the connections that they make with their clients.  They don simply perform a treatment, or providing a service, they address you as a person, a whole person.  When they ask you how you are doing, they really want to know, but not only because it may play a part in your breakout, or muscle spasm, because they care.  They form REAL relationships, remember your children’s names, ask how that big meeting went.  They become and important part of your support system.  In fact, they care so much, that if they can address your needs, they use their network to help you to connect with someone who can.  They accomplish this seamlessly and without being overpowering or pushy.

At a basic level, Sacred Skin Wellness believes that self-care is the most beautiful gift of love.  Truer words have never been spoken.  How can we care for others if we are not properly caring for ourselves?  As mothers, fathers, siblings, friends, we all provide care for one another in some way.  Therefore, their services are not only for mothers or parents.  They ¨service¨ both males and females, from the teen years through mature adulthood.  The lessons of self-care are consequently modeled by their older clients, and taught early on for their younger clients.

Ariana, Michele, Meri, and Carrie work as a team, they create and provide a safe place to go for various treatments.  In fact, being a bit off the beaten path is very nice as far as the calm and quiet atmosphere they have created.  There are no busy streets filled with shoppers or onlookers who see you walking in for a facial, color therapy session, chakkra balancing, Massage or any other service they provide.  I resist the urge to continue naming their unending list of services, because they do not seem to come to an end.  They even create custom treatments for you depending on your needs.  For a greater more detailed list of services visit their website at: http://www.sacredskinwellness.com/

Sacred Skin 2

Each of the women at Sacred Skin Wellness brings something special to the table, I would love to go into more detail on each, but this article would never end, so I will break this post down into a series of articles.  I will introduce you to each one at a different time, highlighting their strengths, and backgrounds.

Sacred Skin Wellness has a whole website full of great services, but here are some we recommend for the holidays (well all year really).

Christmas Lights and Family Time at Boscobel Sparkle- REVIEW!

Posted on December 9, 2015 by Ashley Carmichael Posted in Christmas 2015, Day Trips, Events, Out and about..., Reviews, Uncategorized .

Disclosure:  This is a sponsored post as Ashley was invited to attend this event with her family.  All opinions expressed are her own.

 IMG_1932_2

I love Christmas lights. If I could leave mine up all year round without getting the side eye from my neighbors, I totally would. Growing up, every Christmas eve driving home from my Grandma and Grandpa’s house, my Dad would take the ‘long way home’ so we could see all the Christmas lights, we would drive for hours!

Disclaimer – I am not a photographer…please excuse the quality of the pictures.

This past Friday night we bundled up and headed out to Boscobel for the opening night of Sparkle. Getting there was super easy, up the palisades and right over the Bear Mountain Bridge into Garrison.

As we drove up to the entrance the boys were squealing in delight seeing all the Christmas lights in the distance. Parking was fast and free. As you enter the gardens there us a tent your left, where you can purchase tickets if you need.  There are restrooms to the right of the ticket tent. There is also a cute gift shop full of books, children’s toys, home decor, jewelry and lots more.

Each night boasts different activities be sure to check the website before you go. http://www.boscobel.org/events-and-exhibitions/calendar-of-events/december/

As we made our way past the ticket booth, we met the Sparkle Queen Stilt Walker. Wow!
Absolutely stunning.  The kids were mesmerized.  Aside from how beautiful, all I could think was “How on earth does she walk on those stilts so gracefully?”

IMG_1898

We started our stroll down a path lined by trees decorated with white Christmas lights.

IMG_1900_2

Half way down the path was Santa’s Sparkle Garden. Inside the Garden house we met Santa and Mrs. Clause! The boys were speechless. Santa was really good! Perfect beard, and personality. Mrs. Claus was a delight as well. We weren’t rushed out, we we able to take our time. Plenty of time to have a chat with Santa and Mrs. Claus and take a few photos. You can take plenty of photos with your camera/phone, there is no photographer.
Except for on December 11, 12, 18 & 19th from 5:30-8:30pm
you will get a free 4×6 Photos with Santa!
(While supplies last.)

IMG_1922_2

IMG_1913

We continued down the path to the colored light ‘maze.’  The kids loved this spot!  The bushes were lined with brightly colored lights and glass jars. W and S walked up and down the paths at least 100 times, chasing each other and giggling each time they found one another in the dark.

IMG_1924_2

Around the path and behind the house there is a heated food tent with yummy options for purchase from Hudson Hil’s Café and Market. A few items included popcorn, brownies, chili, soup, hot chocolate and hot cider. See menu here http://www.boscobel.org/wpcontent/uploads/2015/11/menu.pdf. We decided to take a few minutes and warm up with some hot apple cider while listening to live acoustic holiday tunes.

After, we stopped into the Magic Show in the Gallery. The boys were interested, but I think it would be better suited for kids a little bit older. (W is 4 and S is just about 3).

 IMG_1940_2

As we walked out of the Magic Show the boys could hear a saw, (They are currently obsessed with all things construction) so we had to go check it out. In front of the House we found the Ice Sculptor. I have never seen this in person before,  It was amazing to watch him work. Cutting meticulously to create such an intricate masterpiece.

IMG_1974

IMG_1970_2

There was also a Ventriloquist Puppet Show that looked really fun, but the boys were exhausted by this time, so we decided to head home.

Sparkle is the perfect place to get into the holiday spirit and to enjoy being with family. Wander the beautiful grounds listing to Christmas music and gazing at the lights. A perfect winters night.

We will definitely be adding Boscobel Sparkle to our yearly Christmas traditions.

IMG_1984

Join BOSCOBEL for a series of brilliant evening events featuring thousands of lights, luminous displays and festive holiday happenings around the gardens and grounds of Boscobel. Walk the candlelit paths with a hot cup of cocoa and celebrate the season with family and friends.

First Day T-shirt Craft

Posted on September 17, 2015 by RocklandNYMom Posted in Crafts, Specialty Items, Uncategorized .

Disclosure:  This is an unsponsored post.   All opinions expressed are my own.

Like all other parents, the first day of school holds special significance for me.  It’s a sign of growth, of the passing of time, and like with everything else I try to make it very memorable.  You may have seen the chalkboard signs I created… but I just HAD to do one more thing.  That’s when the t-shirt idea became real.  I have a great friend (Christine Hennessey) who has a machine that will cut iron-ons for you.  I asked and she came through like a champ.

Firstly, before I continue, you can contact Christina and she will make you some for a reasonable fee (she has to cover her material costs).  Her email is angelwings1276@verizon.net.  Just let her know what year your child(ren) will graduate and which years you need for the handprints.

So I got the letters from Christina, and my t-shirts from Michaels with coupons.

Letters before ironing

I peeled back the cover from the iron-ons and then cut them into their individual parts.

I then placed them on the shirts to see where I wanted them.  I re-spaced them a few times, while trying to imagine how big their hands would get.

Then I ironed with a pillow-case between the iron and the transfer.  The silver needed 6 more seconds than the black to stay put.  I decided to put the smallest and largest handprints on the front so you can really see the difference.

I purchased fabric paint at Michaels when I was there so I just used that to make their marks.

Here is the end result!  I love them.

Not Your Typical Birthday Photos-IC You Photography Review

Posted on September 17, 2015 by RocklandNYMom Posted in Photo Obsessed, Photography, Reviews, Uncategorized .

Disclosure:  This is a sponsored post. All opinions expressed are my own.

Here at RNYM we have a FANTASTIC Photographers Directory.  Every single one of them is super talented.  Even better is that they are all so very different.  They all offer specials for different types of photos, and each one specializes in specific types or styles of photography- no two are the same.  When IC You Photography joined our offerings I was beyond thrilled.

I spoke with Isabella and together we decided on the timing for our session.  We would do some special photos for the kids birthdays’ (7 days apart).  We were delayed once due to weather and she as quick to reschedule. In between our scheduling and the actual session Isabella asked what the themes for their parties were and we discussed outfits.  She also then informed me that she would have some surprises for me and the kids and that we should bring anything else that the kids wanted to include.

I was directed to the location that Isabella and Claudia had chosen.  It was easy to find and I had her cell number to reach her in case I found myself lost.  True to her word there were many really cool surprises.  Not only had they purchased banners that coordinated with their respective themes, they had found other fabulous props, and even MADE some special ones for each child.  Isabella and Claudia took turns photographing and worked together well.  When the kids were less than cooperative (come on they are 2 and 5) they helped each other out by making the kids smile.  They even took the time to sword fight with them.

A few behind the scenes shots of Isabella and Claudia with the kids.

ICU Laugh

ICU Laugh 3

In real life, the atmosphere was beautiful and fun.  In the photos, its breathtaking, magical, and still so fun.  The series of photos for the kids really reflects who they are.

(E) is so silly, and so adorable even playing a game of “peek-a-boo”,  as well as showing off her favorite stuffed animal Skye.

(A) is pretending to be a Jedi, completely in his element.

When presented with their home-made props you can see how excited and proud they are to have them.

They were even able to get an amazing photo of the two of them together (so, so, so difficult to do).

wmEmmaBirthday-8

I really enjoy these photos.  I am glad to have documented this stage in their lives, and I love that these pictures aren’t the same photos everyone else has that mark milestones.  They are unique, because the photographers are unique.

For example, do you see this photo of (A)?  He is so proud, having so much fun… Then, they made it glow for him.

5starwars-12wm

Things to keep in mind.  If you have a specific idea or something you want to incorporate into your photos, speak up.  This time I didn’t have anything specific but for my next photo-shoot I have something awesome that I would like to do (a little surprise for RNYD).  Also, keep in mind that photographers need time to comb through images and edit, so if they say 4 weeks until you get images, they mean 4 weeks.  You will be glad that they spent the extra time on your photos in the end, BUT plan accordingly.  If you need images for a certain date, book well in advance.

Stay tuned for Christmas Minis and other specials.  At this time they are booking fall  and Halloween minis!

Heart Strings…

Posted on August 5, 2015 by RocklandNYMom Posted in Reviews, Services, Specialty Items, Thoughts.., Uncategorized .

Disclosure: This is an unsponsored post. Sometimes good people do amazing things and just need to be recognized.   All opinions expressed are my own.

Last fall little (E) need to have back surgery. It was a really hard time for us (and one we don’t speak of often). During the whole thing we were very honest with big brother (A). Right before she went into the hospital, (A) and I were shopping and he saw a cross at Piercing Pagoda that was (E) size and asked to buy it for her for good luck (swoon).   Of course the answer was yes. She had to remove it for the procedure, but since that day, she has worn it every other day. Never takes it off.

One of our Christmas photos from last year where you can see her cross.

Cuties

Through the year she had lost one of the little stones, but it was no worry, we still wore it. I just figured it wasn’t worth fixing.

Imagine the scene in my house when she woke up one morning and it wasn’t around her neck. Luckily, the broken chain and the cross were both in her bed and easily found. After a bit of deliberation, I decided to take the kids and the broken necklace up to our family Jeweler Bourghol Brothers. I was certain I was going to be told that it wasn’t worth it to fix anything, and I was going to have to purchase a new, REAL cross. I was totally prepared to do so. I love their quality, and I knew someday she would need one….

I was tentative as I walked up to the counter where Ms. Bourghol stood waiting for me. I explained the story and she completely understood. Together we made the decision to replace the chain (it was actually more cost effective). When we got to the cross itself I braced myself. She didn’t even bring up replacing it. She never even missed a beat when she told me that she would fill in the missing stone with a cz (that’s what is there anyway). Nervous about cost, I asked and was shocked at the result. Not only did she not tell me for a second that it wasn’t worth fixing, she didn’t even consider NOT fixing it, and then the price was so ridiculously reasonable!!!

Reunited less than 24 hours later!!!

BB Cross Back

Today, (A) and (E) were so excited to get her cross back (and looking so lovely), and my heart is melting. (A) reassured his little ‘sis that if she ever needs another one he will get it for her. That’s when I knew I just had to share. This is so special to me. The Bourghol’s have made me birthday gifts, made my wedding bands, made my birthstone eternity bands for my children, and have replaced something of little monetary value, but great sentimental value reasonably. They get it. That’s what you need in a jeweler, good quality, fabulous ethics, skill, and a real family.

(E) still holding on to her cross after we got in the car.

BB Holding Cross

For anyone who has never been Bourghol Brothers but is interested in checking them out, they are located at 73 Lake Road, Congers, NY 10920. They are closed on Sundays and Mondays though if you want to go check them out. Their website is www.bourgholbrosjewelers.com and their phone is 845-268-9752.
