Forced to Shop not Adopt.

Posted on February 23, 2016 by RocklandNYMom Posted in Thoughts.. .

Disclosure:  This is an unsponsored post.  All opinions expressed are my own.

I usually refrain from posting anything semi-controversial on this site.  I try to keep it very sunshiny and smiley.  I have recently been experiencing something that I felt the need to write about despite the fact that people may not agree with me.

I am a lucky woman.  I have a supportive and loving husband, two beautiful children, a job I love and a fabulous pup.  I am surrounded by family and truly feel a part of a fabulous community in Rockland County.

As a family, we recently made the decision to add another pup to the equation.  Duncan is getting older (he’s a 9.5 year old 110 lb chocolate lab), and we would like another.  Duncan is by far the best dog I have ever known.  His temperament is classic lab, love and hugs all the time.  Nothing but tolerance.  He has ALWAYS been the sweetest boy I have ever known.  Through two homes and two kids he has always been constant and loving.  He checks in on the kids before he goes to bed.   I cannot say enough about him.

My Three Kids

We would like to add a new pup so that it can learn from Duncan.  As a teacher I am off for the summer and can dedicate a lot of time to acclimating the new guy or girl to the family.

Here is where the complications come in.  (E) who is 2 has had a few health bumps along the way and we recently found out that she has asthma and is allergic to dogs.  Given that Duncan is a member of the family he wasn’t going anywhere.  Instead we made changes to the household.  Stronger filters, more frequent vacuuming etc.  We KNOW that (E) can tolerate a Lab, and are also interested in a Labradoodle which might even be better.

I WANTED to adopt and did lots of research in order to do so.  I know that even these high demand breeds are often surrendered just like everyone else.  I am NOT opposed to a 2-3 year old pup who can acclimate to our family with a calm and cool demeanor.  I sought out rescues that were committed to the lab/doodle breeds.

I have applied to adopt 4 dogs over the past 4 months and have been turned down for a “busy” household, or because they didn’t think that I was a good “fit”.  One said that I couldn’t adopt because I had small kids, another because my yard isn’t fenced in.  When I said I had a lab and my yard wasn’t fenced they asked if he ran, I said no, they asked how I accomplished that.  I plainly answered that he has been trained.  Still no luck.

I was even turned away from a local shelter (who will remain nameless) because kids and puppies don’t mix (seriously a friend and my auntie were there).

Let me state now that I understand that not every household with kids and dogs where parents work can handle a puppy.  I KNOW that they have to be careful where they place dogs because there are bad situations.  I APPRECIATE how difficult it must be to feel like dogs are placed well or to make the decision.

HOWEVER, I find it impossible to believe that because my application had ONE or TWO small indicators that my house may not work it should be turned away WITHOUT calls made to my references or vet.

Come and do a HOME VISIT and see how my dog is loved and included in our daily routine.  Speak to me on the phone and ask questions about how I think I am going to make it work out.

We have taken great pride in the training of Duncan.  He sleeps on the couch, and my bed more often than I would like from time to time, but he is a darling.  He will eat right from your mouth without touching you.  He will provide you with a pillow when you need one.  He snuggles better than anyone I know.  He sits, stays, comes when you call, walks great on a leash, and that’s not JUST his temperament.  It was hours of work with positive reinforcement, love and determination.

Emma Duncan

The same care was taken when we taught our kids how to handle and play with dogs.  They don’t hit, tease, or scream at them.  They know how to get dogs to sit, shake and feed them appropriately.  They can tell when a pup has had enough.Aidan Duncan

You could NOT find a more loving and ready household for a dog and by denying us a placement they are denying a dog their perfect match.  What could be better for a dog than to be included in a loving, warm, and dog friendly environment?

Instead of adopting a pet and giving them a second chance at life, I am now forced to seek out breeders and pay thousands of dollars to find the next member of my family.  NO matter how many times I ask in a parenting group if anyone knows of an excellent lab/doodle breeder there are at least 5 people who attack me and say “DON’T SHOP ADOPT”.  Yeah well I tried that…

I am currently speaking to a Doodle Breeder and will most likely have our new addition transported up to NY in 7-8 weeks.  I am not completely unhappy with this decision.  I am disgruntled with a  system that perpetuates a cycle, and wish there had been a different outcome…

Where to Shop Local this Holiday Season

Posted on November 27, 2015 by Ashley Carmichael Posted in Ashley's Lists, Christmas 2015, Day Trips, Out and about..., Thoughts.. .

Disclosure:  This is an unsponsored post.  RNYM believes that you should #shopsmall #shoplocal when possible.  All opinions expressed are our own.

As you begin shopping for the holiday season, consider shopping locally and supporting our community! There are many great local options where you can find items tailored toward your specific needs.  Money spent locally helps keep our small businesses open, and creates a strong community.

One of the things we love here at RNYM is that the smaller businesses tend to have specialty items you can’t find anywhere else.  These items are often of better quality and become very special to those you give them to.  We asked the community for input and here is a great list of places to support this holiday season.  We decided that because of the overwhelming response that we would include local restaurants etc. in another post.

Accountability, Poise, and Pride

Posted on October 14, 2015 by RocklandNYMom Posted in Classes, Reviews, Thoughts.. .

Disclosure:  This is an unsponsored post.  I had to share what happens after the review with you all.  All opinions expressed are my own.

I have been meaning to write this piece for what seems like forever… I have put it on my list about a million times and something keeps on coming up. I wanted to update everyone on (A)’s progress with Tae Kwon Do (mostly because I am more than pleased with his progress and the program itself). As you may recall we went for a trial back in April and he loved the class. He kept asking to go back so I signed him up. He did well and learned the value of hard work when it didn’t come super easily to him (he actually had to come home and practice forms with ME so that he could go back and earn his first stripe!).

Well, it’s been 5 months now and I wanted to show you all that he has learned.

When I first reviewed the class there was so much I wanted to say, but there is only so much I can write (mostly because you all don’t want to read a BOOK). One of the things that blows me away about Sensei Arnie is how he holds the kids accountable for themselves and their actions. I love it. He isn’t just teaching the kids “Martial Arts”. He is teaching them how to be good citizens and leading them towards self-realization. Much, much more important lessons.

My little man.

A TKD Yellow Test

So does Sensei Arnie. If (A) should forget his belt, it wasn’t mommies fault, it was his. He is responsible for his own actions and his own gear.  If he should have his feet in the wrong position Sensei often says that “someone” has the wrong foot forward and it is (A)’s job to figure out that it is him, and self-correct. Seems like a lot for a 4 or 5 year old doesn’t it? But it isn’t and I have seen the difference at home as well. He is moving on to Kindergarten this year and he needs to be held more responsible for himself and for his actions.   (A) is also careful to pack his Tae Kwon Do bag in advance, and his swim bag too, knowing that if something is missing, it is his responsibility.

A TKD Yellow Test 3(A) has also learned the value of hard work and dedication. He practices on his own, and is so proud to earn stripes. He loves to be asked to demonstrate in front of the class (and he gets so serious its adorable when he does it).  Sensei is helping him to learn to take a leadership role, and to use his eagerness to please in a positive manner.  Through this, (A) is starting to realize his potential.

(A) breaks a board.

A TKD Board Breaking

One of the most exciting times in class is when students are allowed to “test” for the next belt. Having worked hard and earning his high white belt and required stripes, (A) needed to test in front of the Grandmaster to earn his yellow belt. When the evening of the test came he was very nervous, and had been having difficulty remembering which direction to turn, so RNYD and I were too. When it was his turn to perform for Grandmaster we were on the edge of our seats. I was blown away to see how he stepped it up.   He did a fabulous job. He got through his forms without mistakes, and the sparring too (I had to hold my breath). He received some constructive criticism from Grandmaster about his kicks (higher and a little sharper) that he now works on at home.

THIS is the face of a proud boy who has accomplished a goal.

A TKD Yellow Test 2

Since earning his Yellow belt the real transformation has begun. He offers to count during class at least once a day. He remembers how to turn all of the time and he demonstrates his forms on his own with ease (in fact he is on a three strip streak these past two weeks). I am so proud of my little man. I adore the little serious guy face he makes and of how he feels when he has accomplished something. I love to watch him glow.

Since I wrote this post, he has earned his high YELLOW belt and is not eligible for his green… WOW

A TKD High Yellow

Back to School Photos Craft

Posted on August 22, 2015 by RocklandNYMom Posted in Crafts, Photo Obsessed, Thoughts.. .

Disclosure:  This is an unsponsored post.  All opinions expressed are my own.

I started taking those first and last day photos of (A) last year and love it.  I was making my Shutterfly album and was staring at the page of him that shows them next to each other.  The only part of the photos that I hated was finding printables on the internet that had the correct year and or grade each time.  I decided I needed to take matters into my own hands.  I am a big fan of using the same props over and over again to show how the kids grow and change so I created something that was more permanent and could be reused.

The Shutterfly page that started it all.

Shutterfly Page

After searching different ideas, I went to AC Moore where I browsed around and finally picked up the supplies I needed.  The boards run about $14.00 but it’s much less if you bring your 40% coupon.  I store paint pens in a plastic bag (up high) all the time, I simply had to add a few colors to my collection.  I prefer the Sharpie brand, but they all work.

Sign Supplies

Blank Board 1

I painted each of the boards on the front and back using the black chalk paint.

Board Painted 1

Once dry I played around on my computer looking for fonts and graphics that I wanted to add to the project.  I made them different according to their likes ((A) prefers math and reasoning while (E) really loves books).  For those of you with a cricket machine etc, this project would be really cute and super fast.

I then cut out the pieces and arranged them on the boards to see how I liked them.

Taking Shape 2

For the more difficult fonts, I traced them with a pen (which made marks in the board you can follow).  I used the paint pens in different colors to make it permanent.

I did the same on the back for the Last Day of School using for both children a sun and water (they both really love swimming).

Heart Strings…

Posted on August 5, 2015 by RocklandNYMom Posted in Reviews, Services, Specialty Items, Thoughts.., Uncategorized .

Disclosure: This is an unsponsored post. Sometimes good people do amazing things and just need to be recognized.   All opinions expressed are my own.

Last fall little (E) need to have back surgery. It was a really hard time for us (and one we don’t speak of often). During the whole thing we were very honest with big brother (A). Right before she went into the hospital, (A) and I were shopping and he saw a cross at Piercing Pagoda that was (E) size and asked to buy it for her for good luck (swoon).   Of course the answer was yes. She had to remove it for the procedure, but since that day, she has worn it every other day. Never takes it off.

One of our Christmas photos from last year where you can see her cross.

Cuties

Through the year she had lost one of the little stones, but it was no worry, we still wore it. I just figured it wasn’t worth fixing.

Imagine the scene in my house when she woke up one morning and it wasn’t around her neck. Luckily, the broken chain and the cross were both in her bed and easily found. After a bit of deliberation, I decided to take the kids and the broken necklace up to our family Jeweler Bourghol Brothers. I was certain I was going to be told that it wasn’t worth it to fix anything, and I was going to have to purchase a new, REAL cross. I was totally prepared to do so. I love their quality, and I knew someday she would need one….

I was tentative as I walked up to the counter where Ms. Bourghol stood waiting for me. I explained the story and she completely understood. Together we made the decision to replace the chain (it was actually more cost effective). When we got to the cross itself I braced myself. She didn’t even bring up replacing it. She never even missed a beat when she told me that she would fill in the missing stone with a cz (that’s what is there anyway). Nervous about cost, I asked and was shocked at the result. Not only did she not tell me for a second that it wasn’t worth fixing, she didn’t even consider NOT fixing it, and then the price was so ridiculously reasonable!!!

Reunited less than 24 hours later!!!

BB Cross Back

Today, (A) and (E) were so excited to get her cross back (and looking so lovely), and my heart is melting. (A) reassured his little ‘sis that if she ever needs another one he will get it for her. That’s when I knew I just had to share. This is so special to me. The Bourghol’s have made me birthday gifts, made my wedding bands, made my birthstone eternity bands for my children, and have replaced something of little monetary value, but great sentimental value reasonably. They get it. That’s what you need in a jeweler, good quality, fabulous ethics, skill, and a real family.

(E) still holding on to her cross after we got in the car.

BB Holding Cross

For anyone who has never been Bourghol Brothers but is interested in checking them out, they are located at 73 Lake Road, Congers, NY 10920. They are closed on Sundays and Mondays though if you want to go check them out. Their website is www.bourgholbrosjewelers.com and their phone is 845-268-9752.

#Superheroesforeveryone

Posted on August 3, 2015 by RocklandNYMom Posted in Good Cause, RNYM's Picks, Thoughts.., Uncategorized .

Disclosure: This is an unsponsored post, but awesome is awesome and you needed to know. All opinions expressed are my own.

We are a superhero family… If you follow my posts that’s no surprise. We have had hero birthday parties, attended comic book day, made superhero mugs for father’s day, and so much more. One thing that constantly tugs at me is that there is a GIANT lack of strong female characters that (E) can relate and look up to.

As if he read my mind, a friend and comic book aficionado, Gary Bloom, has started a campaign to release the perfect comic book series. There are strong female LEADS, no SEXY outfits, and zero gender LIMITATIONS. Heroes are heroes, female and male as equal counterparts, as it should be!

REd Lance Photo

We adore Natasha Romanov (Black Widow) and can’t believe this campaign hasn’t already raised the money that it needs to get going. Who wouldn’t want that for their daughter? Who wouldn’t want their little girl learning to DEFEND herself, feeling STRONG, PROUD, SMART, and RESOURCEFUL?! I look forward to the opportunity to explain to my daughter that you don’t need a man to save you; you are capable! Men & women are partners in crime (or heroism); no gender superiority.

Cinderhawk_Shield

When Frozen was released, the parental boards overflowed with love for sisters who saved themselves. Anna wasn’t saved by a kiss; it was true love of a sibling! Here’s a chance to take that idea and magnify it tenfold! I’m a HUGE Disney fan (as are my children). I’d love to see them behind this, from the GROUND up! I mean, who better than the company who now owns both the MARVEL and STAR WARS franchises? Girls don’t have to be princesses… they have options, why not show them some?

Oh, right: they’re the ones who left Black Widow toys out of the plan.

While I’m not an aficionado of obscure comics, we do watch some offbeat titles, and I still can’t find many strong females. Sadly, the popular heroines are regularly scantily clad. While I like Wonder Woman, I’d never let my daughter walk out of the house like that. I can think of few that are strong AND dressed conservatively.

StonefishShield

Gary (the man behind the comic) intends to change. He wrote HEROES and then chose genders. They won’t be named “-girl” or “-woman”, much like Black Widow and Firestar; they became Cinderhawk and Stonefish. Bricker and Raceway have no gender identifiers, why should the women?

Why is Gary so intent on doing this? He’s a good guy, but more so, he’s a dedicated, loving husband and dad. An avid reader of comics, and follower of heroes, he was bothered at the consistent portrayal of the females in such works. He’s creating characters that he would want his daughter to emulate… that I want my daughter to emulate….

To get this endeavor off of the ground Gary has a Kickstarter campaign and is SO close to his goal. He has 11 more days to achieve it so that the first comic can be printed and released. I’ve already made a donation, and put in my request for t-shirts for the whole family. That’s how certain I am that this will be AMAZING.

For more information you can check out his Facebook Page (click Here) where he posts information including other interviews and articles about him and his amazing fight for GENDER EQUALITY in the SUPERHERO world. There are also some descriptions and exclusive pictures of the characters themselves. To contribute to his kickstarter campaign ( every donation of even a dollar is helpful, and receives an incentive) please click here. I will of course keep you updated, I hope to someday be purchasing tickets to the Red Lance Movie, and a Halloween costume for (E) to be Cinderhawk.

Finding me Again…

Posted on July 21, 2015 by RocklandNYMom Posted in Classes, Reviews, RNYM's Picks, Specialty Items, Thoughts.. .

I do a lot of writing, and a lot of reviewing… I find that the most difficult things to write about are those that concern me. Of course, I am human, I am self-conscious, I am not perfect. I do however feel it necessary to share my most recent journey.

A while back I reviewed Fitness Kickboxing NY. I attended 3 classes and wrote about my experience. That was supposed to be it. After the classes were over I found myself upset that I would no longer be going to Fitness Kickboxing. But, I didn’t have the time, I felt guilty being away from the kids… I had all of the usual excuses…. Little did I know that I would enjoy the class so much that I would keep going. At first 2 times a week, and since then it has steadily increased. I am currently attending 5 days a week and missing it when I am not going on weekends.

Situp Smile July

I love it. I love the challenge, I love the camaraderie, I love the next day soreness, and of course I love the results. In 3 months I have lost 10 lbs (that was before I started behaving myself with my food), and have made VISABLE progress in problem areas. I have had TONS of comments. Friends and family have noticed so often that several of them have started coming with me. My clothing is fitting better, some not so much as I get too small and have to replace it ;0)

As a former athlete, I had basically given in and decided that my new role was as a mom, that I had a “new” body that was softer and rounder. I knew I could lose weight, but being limited as to what I can do as a result of my three knee surgeries, I didn’t think that I would ever return to my former shape. I was very wrong, I needed to find the right exercise. I am strong again. I stand up straighter, I have more confidence.

I have been so happy with my results that I have upped the ante. As a part of my training Amir is now sending me meal plans to follow. These meal plans (lessons on healthy eating that I now use for the whole family) paired with my training will really kick my results into high gear. I am so looking forward to that.

Classes are hard. I sweat (and love every minute). I am usually sore the following day, but I can now hold a plank for 45 seconds+. My muffin top is disappearing, and I am no longer ashamed to swim with my kids. There is also a room full of classmates who push you to make it through, and cheer you on.

megan kickbox

Amir listens to his students. When we have a problem area that we would like to work on, he finds a way to build it into that day’s class, or the following day’s class. In fact, today Ashley and I stayed afterwards and completed a portion of a squat challenge together.

Crunches

I attend the 6 am class. It’s the perfect way to start my day. I end up invigorated and ready to face the world. At the risk of sounding cliché I have to add that the energy built from exercising then carries me through the day. It gives me the necessary release to be happier with everything I do. RNYD is so pleased with my happiness that when I feel like I can’t attend or I have no time, he encourages me to go and happily takes the reigns with the kids. I no longer feel guilty, I now feel as though I am a good role model for my children, it’s important to take care of me too. They are learning through my actions that it’s important to be happy, it’s important to be healthy, it’s important to be active.

Here’s the really hard part…. my results… Here they are (remember I am still working)… while you look, take the time to notice not only how my body is becoming toned, tighter and smaller, but also my face.  In April I am exhausted, and red in the face, looking like I am going to drop dead.  NOW… sweaty, working hard, but smiling, and enjoying every moment.

Megan July Mix Results

Obviously I know that all things don’t work for everyone, for example, I get ridiculously bored riding the bike for long periods of time. I thrive on the dynamic nature of kickboxing. If you are intruigued and would like to give it a try, contact Amir at Fitness Kickboxing and give it a try, 3 trial classes is a mere $20, and it’s a fantastic investment in the most important asset you have, yourself.

Building a Foundation- Condors Swimming Month 2

Posted on July 2, 2015 by RocklandNYMom Posted in Classes, Classes for Kids, Reviews, Thoughts.. .

Disclosure:  This is a sponsored post.  All opinions expressed are my own.

I promised you a monthly update on (A)’s progress so here we go…

I have to admit, I thought when the parents at the Condors Swim lessons warned me that we would become addicted they were joking.  We had signed on for one month of lessons.  At the end of that month (A) was doing so well and enjoyed it so much that we had to sign up again (read our review here).  Here we are now at the end of month two, just having signed up for the first summer session, and here’s why.

(A) adores his teachers.  I actually get in trouble if we are running late.  At the conclusion of his classes, he always tries to talk me into purchasing another session for him.  Finally, on days when he doesn’t have class, he asks if he can go.

Aside from that is what he is accomplishing during these lessons.  At the end of month one he was looking good, starting to gain confidence in the water, even submerging his head.  At the end of month two I can happily add that he is “swimming”.  That is, he can put his head under water and kick at the same time.  He is moving.  I am actually so mad because the one lesson that I had to miss because of another engagement, RNYD took him, and it was the first time that (A) achieved this feat.  I remember them coming home running in the door saying “I can swim!”  RNYD came in right behind asking why I hadn’t told him that he could do that… The answer, he hadn’t done it yet.

So fresh off of his success he is excited to start intense training (4x a week for 2 weeks) in summer session 1.  All I can think is, if he has done this well only attending twice a week, how much will he gain at the end of this session?

How can I tell he really loves it and wanted to do it again?  He asked for the additional lessons for his birthday, in lieu of toys.  That is HUGE for a 5 year old.

We are really excited too.  Ashley mentioned to me during one of our first talks that once he was “swimming” the fine tuning would begin, and that is where we are.  I cannot wait to see him continue to develop.  He LOVES every moment of class and so do we (he even tells me I don’t have to walk him into the pool area anymore, he knows the drill).

091

The best part?  I am glad that he is swimming and will continue to become a good swimmer. It’s a huge part of our lives (both grandmothers have pools).  RNYD and I both swim well.  More than that, he will be safer.  Confidence and a good foundation in the water will give us piece of mind to know that we can spend time at the pools and the beach.

I am over the moon with his progress in the Condors Swimming program and cannot wait to post again in 2 weeks and show you more!

Father’s Day Project 2015

Posted on June 15, 2015 by RocklandNYMom Posted in Crafts, Specialty Items, Thoughts.. .

I love home made gifts, but sometimes when it comes to making things for dads it becomes difficult to think of something that you can make and he will be able to use.  I also like to incorporate hand or foot prints as often as possible as I think it helps to cement their stage and age well.  Sometimes when you are creating something for dad its difficult to think of ideas that are sentimental yet “manly”.  This year I think I was able to hit the nail on the head.

To get some inspiration I went to AC Moore and walked around.  It didn’t take long before I saw a display with paintable mugs and knew that’s what I would do.  I know what you are thinking, not so original, but its what we ended up putting on them that I think made it really special.

Mug Blank

As you may know (given our previous posts), our family really enjoys super heroes.  Especially the Avengers.  It is something that we all watch and have fun with together.  I wanted to find a way to do that on the mug.  I searched and found some inspiration for creating super heroes out of handprints on the internet and my mind was made up.  All that was left was to decide which heroes to depict.

For (A) the choice was simple, Captain America.  For (E) it was a little more difficult.  At her age (almost 2) I couldn’t be painting too many colors (she curls up her hand or pulls away) it had to be quick.  All of the options I saw were of wonder woman, and batgirl, neither of whom she knows.  Then we had an idea, the Black Widow.  She is an avenger, requires only one color and is a family favorite.  (E) even named her bitty baby Natasha Romanov.

(A) started by writing “Super _(DAD/POP/GRANDPA)____” on each mug in a different color to match each personality.

Mug Super

Then we added the handprints for the heroes.

Once dry I was able to add on the details and finishing touches.

I then wrote the year on the bottom.
