One of the things I love about small local businesses is the way they all come together to help the community. Of course they do, they live here. So many of the RNYM businesses give back it would be impossible to list them all (if you are ever in need of one, contact me).

When I met Gilda Burke of Jolirose Cake Shop we were working together on Gabi’s “Party of a Lifetime”. her creation blew me away. So much so that when I needed a smash cake for (E)’s first birthday photo-shoot I went straight to her.

So, after almost a year of our professional relationship (and tons of well deserved accolades later), I find out that she also participates in Icing Smiles, a program that brings amazing cakes to very sick children. Not just ANY cake, their dream cake, and if you’ve ever seen her work, you know that’s just what it will be.

To request a “smile” is easy. You just go to their website and click on the button. You fill out a request and viola, one less thing for a family to worry about. Sometimes the best thing for a sick kiddo is to feel a little “normal”, but its one of the hardest things for the parents to do with so much on their plate. You do not have to be the parent of a sick child to request one. If you know someone in need you can nominate them to receive one. Talented cake artists like Gilda will create a beautiful masterpiece that may help everyone to forget their worries and enjoy a moment of time.

Every Mom Needs… A Good Bag

I am a super busy mom (yeah aren’t we all) always on the go. I need supplies that can keep up with me. Everything needs to be dual action. For instance, I often use my camera bag as my diaper bag! I need compartments, durability and of course it needs to be attractive.

I also have a million bags. As a soccer coach I have been given a million freebies at conventions, camps, clinics, etc. One of my favorites has been cinch sacs. They aren’t big and bulky like many other bags, they are really lite and east to grab when you need to. I have one for (A)’s soccer gear, one for my training bibs, one for my gym gear and now one for my RocklandNYMom papers.

Of all of these bags that I have of this type I have to say that this one is my favorite.

It’s attractive (especially because it has the fancy personalization), and has all the convenience of my other bags, BUT it also has a few more features that I adore. It’s sturdy. This is the first time I have felt comfortable putting important papers in this type of bag. There is also a separate front zipper pouch that I can put things in so that they don’t get lost and can be easily accessed. I can now find my business cards and a pen when I am out working.

The price point is great too. It doesn’t break the bank, and has several design options. It will make a great teacher gift too. Now that I enjoy the Thirty one bags, I am going to purchase one of the Zip Top Organizing Utility Totes to carry my teaching items in, it will be super handy for bringing home documents to write and papers to grade!!!

Yummy Cookies, and Chocolate Oh My!

I like chocolate A LOT! We could probably make that sweets in general. I would say I like them more than the average person. I can polish off a large bag of M&M’s or a bag of cookies in 5 minutes flat (not that I am particularly proud of that). I usually don’t keep sweets in the house, once I start I just can’t stop. I feel badly about it later because I know it is not good for me. Imagine my excitement (and fear) when I was asked to review some specialty chocolates and cookies from German Grocery!

I do not consider myself a connoisseur of any kind, but I have eaten quite a bit of chocolate and cookies in my time. I was determined to approach these with a critical eye and be able to give the most detail possible. Let me start by saying, these are not just any cookies, or any chocolates. Even with my track record I was not able to sit and gobble them down. Their richness and the interest in the flavoring forced me to slow down, take my time and enjoy each taste.

Let’s start with the cookies. The first were chocolate covered and super rich. I was able to eat one at a time only because of the richness, and believe me I am not complaining. The mix of flavors had my mouth on overload, and instead of mindlessly chomping through the entire package, they lasted, and I was able to reward myself with a treat every now and again.

The second bag of cookies were a shortbread sort of cookie. Very sweet, but so delicious. These were the family favorite. Especially for (A) who took a bite and then finished the cookie with an enthusiastic “yummmm!” After the first he said “Mom may I please have another one?” Endorsements don’t really come better than that. They are a great little treat with a cup of coffee or tea, really nice and again, I don’t want to gobble the whole bag. I want to enjoy them slowly.

Now the chocolates. The kids didn’t get to try these as they contained liquor. These were left up to the adults. The chocolate on the outside is delicious. I really enjoyed it. Although I usually don’t like too much added to my chocolate (I am a purist) the first chocolates “Laroshell” were more mild and a little more my style. You could barely taste the alcohol. The second chocolate “Brandy Beans” had more of a kick. Still super delish chocolate on the outside I was able to taste the alcohol a bit more. They were yummy and I was able to have a few before my Father in Law confiscated them (they were his clear favorites).

I would without a doubt recommend these treats and the other like it on the German Grocery site. They are not your “everyday” treats. They are a little different and different is nice. I really enjoyed having one or two a day and not gobbling them down mindlessly. My family too. It’s a real treat to have a cookie after dinner with a nice hot drink.

‘Let it Snow’ Day Project!

I love preserving handprints and footprints. I use them for almost everything. Something about how fleeting they are. You blink and they are grown. I feel that way when I look at my little (A). I just had to sign him up for (GULP) kindergarten!!! I also, love salt dough. It’s true, I have used it a million times, and it’s a great cheap medium for preserving those little miracles. Why else? When little (E) puts it in her mouth (and of course she did) I don’t have to freak out because of something being in it. It’s just flour, salt and water…

Last year I made Valentines out of their feet in the shape of a heart. Then for St. Pats I made Clovers out of their hands. This year of course had to be a little different.

Let’s review how I do it.

1 cup of fine grain salt
2 cups of flour
1 cup of lukewarm water
Cookie Sheets
Stepping stone imprint letters, numbers and shapes
Oven at 250 for about 4 hours.

We chose an appropriate shape for this month’s design (I say month because let’s face it, I will probably do this again soon). As we were SUPPOSED to get the storm of the century we decided to do mittens, with their hands inside of them.

I let the kids mix as long as they can. Once they are sufficiently bored with that part I mix it completely.

I then give each of them a piece for them to play with until I need their hand print.

I free hand the design for the ornament. Last year I cut them out with shapes, but I didn’t love the sharp edges.

They are both pros at making impressions with their hands and feet at this point so it is quick and easy. I help (A) push in the numbers for the year, and then make little holes for the ribbon to go through when we are done.

Bake them for roughly 4 hours on 250 (I make mine thick, and want them completely dry).

Once cool, we paint them. You don’t have to, but that’s fun for them, and fun to look at as decorations for me.

I let the kids choose their own colors. It’s nice for them to participate so much now that they are older.

Let them dry and then put around the edges in sharpie the things that they love right now. This was a nice exercise in brainstorming, as (A) came up with things that each of them really liked.

Then surprise a loved one with a little cute present. I always make one for us and one or two to pass on to grandparents, aunts etc. I used to try to make for everyone, but that was SOOO much work. Now we make two extra and the kids get to decide who gets them. Here are the finished products!!

Sensory-Friendly Shows at AMC Palisades

As a special education teacher, friend and parent something that really hits home for me is the need for more understanding for children with differences. All of them. That’s why when a fellow blogger Haute Happenings posted about this I had to share (with permission of course). I think that this is an awesome opportunity, and gives parents a chance to do something that they might otherwise be very timid about trying.

My Au Pair

There are what seems like a million childcare options available these days. Most of them outrageously expensive, and how do you choose between them? One that is often overlooked but can be most affordable (especially if you need many hours and have multiple children) is an au pair.

This is one of the options that I have personal experience with, and therefore it is near and dear to my heart. As a child I grew up in a one-parent household. My parents were divorced and my father traveled for his job. A teacher with 3 children at home my mother needed some help. We had some neighbors who had moved to the United States from France a few years earlier whom my family had become close with. They had an older cousin who wanted to come to the United States. It was arranged that she would come and live with us and help my mother to care for us in exchange for housing and some additional pay.

Enter my au pair Violin. She was awesome. She ate tomatoes like apples, wore heels every day and taught me conversational French. My mother didn’t have to worry about our before and after care because she was always there to get us on and off the bus. She helped us make meals, get homework done, work on projects, she was always there for us. I have one very fond memory of coming home after winning an award for crazy hat day and her happiness, ohhh that big giant hug. She was family. Who could love your children and care for them more than family?

Many people also think of having an au pair as being for the rich. In reality it’s one of the most cost effective childcare options. My family was not rich by any stretch of the imagination. In fact, if my mother had been forced to pay for before and after care for us, tutors, and also an occasional babysitter, it would have cost her much more money, especially because back then there was only half day kindergarten and my brother was 5. It is actually one of the most cost-effective childcare options.

Au Pairs provide so much more than childcare to your family. Au Pairs help with light household chores, laundry, meals and errands. The cost of an au pair is PER FAMILY, not per child, as with daycares and your children are in the comfort of their home if they are sick. No need to worry about who is going to watch them while you go to work until their fever breaks.

What would you bring on a deserted island?

Start with an eyelash curler to get maximum effect.
Now, take out both mascara tubes and hold BOTH in one hand! Go through steps 3, 4, & 5 on one eye 1st then the other!)

Start mid-way up your lash and wiggle the fibers through. Don’t forget the lashes near the outer corner of your eye! That’s where you get the real WOW factor!

Shining Star Tutoring!

As an educator this is a super busy time for me. Progress reports have just come back for the semester, and some students are struggling as the material grows in difficulty. For those of us who have midterms, these huge cumulative tests are looming just weeks away and we are at a loss for what to do for our students. I have joked with colleagues in the past about dressing as one for Halloween. When I asked him how he would help a student who was struggling with the concept he asked me to wait for a second. When he got up from the table I was unsure what to expect. He returned with a bag of manipulatives, a good sign. Todd is ready for student who have varying learning styles. He continued to teach me as if I was a student who was struggling with finding equivalent fractions. He first helped me to understand the terminology (the building block from which he could continue the lesson). Todd questioned me until I was able to state that equivalent fractions were different pieces that made up the same value.

From there he was able to have me create some using the bars. When I created the equivalencies, he then helped me to see that there was a pattern to them, a way to determine how to make one. I was not only learning, I was coming to the conclusions on my own through his line of questioning (which of course he related to situations that would be easy for a student to relate to). This type of learning is what we strive for as educators. To have the time to help students to realize that they have all of the tools necessary for success and that all they need to do is draw upon those experiences and apply them. Todd helped me to do that easily (and believe me as a fellow educator I didn’t make it easy on him).

Todd is an experienced teacher who is has clearly joined the profession for the right reasons. He is dedicated to helping students meet with success. He reports back to parents on the progress that he is making with a student and helps them to work with the student at home as well. He is happy to reach out to classroom teachers and make sure that they are on the same page.

From Geek to Glam

I don’t often get the opportunity to dress like a human. I really mean that. Most of the time I am in my mommy clothes or so focused on whatever financial analysis I am working on that I don’t (or can’t) take the time to accessorize my clothes or make myself look like anything more than a finance geek. That’s why this week I was so excited to get to spend the morning with the very fashionable and talented Artistic Consultant, Elizabeth Manna. As an Artistic Consultant, Elizabeth focuses on all areas of design, from fashion and jewelry to interior decorating. Today, she was here to focus on jewelry.

When Elizabeth arrived at my house I had to warn her that she was catching me at a vulnerable moment. I was in the middle of a very complex family budgeting analysis and incredibly stressed out about a family photo shoot we were having later that afternoon. In essence, I was in full on finance geek + mommy mode. If she was going to make me look and feel glamorous, well, she had her work cut out for her.

Elizabeth is just one of those people who always looks effortlessly pulled together. I am NOT one of those people. In fact, I wear the same jewelry every day. Luckily, no matter how little or large one’s fashion and design sense is, Elizabeth can remedy the situation. I found her consultation services to be incredibly valuable. I learned a lot about how to pair jewelry with all the different clothes in my closet. In particular we focused on three areas: my outfit for the later photo shoot, my dress for an upcoming function, and my every day work clothes.

As I was carrying down the sweater I planned to wear to the photo shoot, the first thing Elizabeth said was that since the sweater has a belt we should not look at any long pieces. I hadn’t even put the sweater down yet! She works that quickly. Seconds later, she had picked out my earrings and bracelet from her stash (jewelry lovers will want to dive head first into this stash and she does allow purchases), showed me how to wear it properly, and explained why these particular pieces of were cut correctly for this outfit.

She also explained that wearing a longer necklace will draw the attention away from my belly (an area of particular difficulty for me) and onto the necklace instead. I had always that it would be the other way around. Go figure, I was wrong!

We also spent time accessorizing my work clothes. One big thing I learned was that accessories do not take away from the professionalism of an outfit. Accessories ENHANCE the professionalism of an outfit and many accessories can work multiple ways with multiple outfits. In fact, the same bracelet that I am wearing to the casual photo shoot will be worn with the little black dress (I love the economics behind that, a diverse piece or two is key!).

Excuses…

Excuses…we all have them, mostly when it comes to taking care of ourselves. It costs too much money, I don’t have time, I’m not worth it. I have used them all and like most I was very skeptical of the Rodan and Fields skin care lines that seem to have swept through all of our worlds like a blizzard in (November??)… When independent consultant Megan Sheehan joined our Direct Sales Page, she challenged me to use it and report my findings, confident that I would love it…. Below are my thoughts…

My face and I have battled since my teen years when I was losing terribly to acne until I eventually gave in and went on the super strong Accutane. It cleared up my face, but wreaked havoc on my skin in general. Since then I have been super cautious using anything on my face, and at the age of 34, was still having breakout issues. Broken and worried that my face was going to age early (because I couldn’t wear almost anything with an SPF because the result was always breakouts) I took Megan up on her offer and tried REDEFINE.

I love it. I just ordered a refill on my daily facial mask. I have had people ask me what foundation I switched to because they loved it. The answer? None, it’s my skin, I am much more confident without makeup these days. My face is brighter and smoother. I have even had people say that it looks like I lost weight. Sadly no, it’s my face firming up.

It Costs Too Much Money…

Nope, I don’t buy it. Here’s why. I have been that woman, walking through the facial isle in Target, Shop Rite, etc. I pick up a $14.95 bottle of face wash, and then the coordinating $20 moisturizer with sunscreen, the facemask etc… I hate it, and I am stuck. I can’t return it, I broke out, and so the next time I am out I try again… I have spent waaaaaay more on items I don’t use than on this regimen. R&F claims that it’s about a 60 day supply, it’s more. I have been using mine for 4 months and I just had to order a refill on my Daily Mask, but mostly because I used too much when I first started applying. That having been said, I am certain that I am saving money on beauty items (not to mention space in my bathroom cabinets). Oh yeah, and there’s a 60-Day money back guarantee… so its risk free…

It Takes Too Long…

I thought so too, especially when I read that the mask should be on about 2 minutes (to let it dry). With two little ones (4 y and 18 m) no way I will find the time. Wrong! I put it on while I am getting my 4 year old ready for bed. He calls it my “Skeleton” face because I started in the fall when his skeleton PJ’s came out. He thinks it’s funny. I sometimes wear it for longer than 2 minutes. In the am, I put it on and then make my coffee and turn on the shower. It works great. I have been very dedicated to using the product and I have been able to work it into my busy lifestyle no problem (yes with coaching, the site and working full time too).

MY SKIN, MY HOUSE!

I am always afraid that something will dry out my skin, or over moisturize, causing break outs. This regimen has done neither. My skin looks healthier, not dry at all and no breakouts. I have purchased skin products in the past that have bleached my comforters (URGH) and was nervous that with Retinol in it the same would happen this time. Happy to report, no bleaching (RNYD would not have been happy).

My Conclusions…

I am done with excuses and I am going to continue with my regimen. When I had questions I emailed Meghan and she got right back to me. If she didn’t know the answer right away, she called the R&F nurses, it was 24 hours or less to get an answer. I asked if there was something I could use for my occasional pimples, and they had a perfect recommendation. The lip renewing serum was also amazing I used it one morning and was really blown away. The older I get the more likely I am to go for quality vs. convenience. I splurge on the pair of jeans that makes me feel good (instead of multiple cheaper pairs that I hate and donate a month later). My face is no exception. I am done playing supermarket roulette, I have found the product that works and couldn’t be happier (it actually makes life easier to know and just order it when I am low!).
