Thank you New City School of Music

Posted on October 18, 2020 by RocklandNYMom Posted in Classes, Reviews, Uncategorized .

A big thank you to New City School of Music.  Thank you for keeping some sort of “normalcy” in my kid’s life.  Thank you for continually adapting seamlessly despite all the craziness that is going on right now.

It’s back to school this week, some remotely, some hybrid, some in person.  When we went into quarantine last March, I didn’t know what to do.  My son has become quite the drummer, and just like I was concerned about his schooling, I was super concerned about what would happen with his music.  And no, its not because I had delusions about him becoming a famous drummer.  If he does, that’s great and it will be a result of years of hard work and effort, as well as a love for music.

It goes so much deeper than that.  Since he has started drumming other areas have improved as well.  His focus, his reading, his work ethic and listening skills.  He has started branching out into different genres and become more interesting to speak to.  Some of this is maturity, he has been taking lessons since he was 7, but its more.  His tracking is faster, his reading has GREATLY improved.  He went from a kid who didn’t want to sit still and read his assignments to a kid who read 1.5 hours in the car for fun on the way home from Pennsylvania, and each night before bed.  He’s almost done with the Harry Potter series and it’s amazing.

I was so afraid for that to stop in March.  But it didn’t.  The school transitioned to online lessons quickly, we didn’t miss one lesson.  Andrew’s setup is perfect, they learn, jam together, and even sometimes have drumming competitions.  Andrew has even been sharing his influences, and (A) uses YouTube to watch performances and drum clinics.

I have another reason to thank them now.  They are completely re-opened in person lessons now.  Everyone can go in, and there is a fabulous list of precautions that they are taking.  While public schools are still revamping their curriculum for instruments due to their limitations, New City School of Music is completely open.  BUT for those of us keeping our kids home because of immunity issues, they allow us to continue online.  Yes you read it, if you’re nervous or NEED to stay home for medical reasons, you can still get your lessons in.  With (E) being one such person we are super thankful that they continue to have that option available.  They hosted an online performance in the spring for students to showcase what they have been working on, and have also mailed us the bracelets that (A) has earned.  RNYD and I do not feel that (A) is missing out on ANYTHING by staying remote, in fact in many ways it’s much easier.  We are SO thankful.

Pretty Princess Photos

Posted on March 2, 2020 by RocklandNYMom Posted in Photo Obsessed, Photography, Reviews, Uncategorized .

Disclosure:  This is a sponsored post as we were invited to take photos with IC You Photography.

Anyone who knows (E) knows that she loves dress up, that she loves lace, and accessories, especially a tiara, oh AND shoes.  She is a horror loving girl, with a strong fashion sense (you should see her closet vs mine).  What they may not know, is that she also loves Lacrosse.  She plays soccer (yay, sort of) and swims well, but she loves Lacrosse.  Only people who know us are aware of that.  It’s no surprise then that when Isabella wanted to capture the two sides of several clients, to showcase some girl power she thought of (E).

The photos she envisioned were girls dressed up all fancy, with their favorite sports equipment.  Isabella’s goal was to break down barriers and show the different sides of today’s youth.

As a female athlete I can say that I have dealt with my fair share of assumptions and discrimination over the years.  It was not uncommon when I was in college for people to assume that because I was a female athlete that we must be gay or not be girly and  have no fashion sense (well some of that is true… but luckily my daughter helps me with the fashion).  Listen, I don’t care who you prefer nor have I ever, but assumptions hurt, no matter what they are.

Fast forward to NOW, to this new breed of girl.  I am loving it.  Our girls are not encouraged anymore to be tough or girly.  It is accepted and praised to be one, both or none.  In fact, more of my female students than ever participate in one sort of sport or another, and they are excelling at it.  That’s what this shoot was about. Showing who you are.

(E) chose a REALLY girly lace pink dress and her favorite tiara for the shoot, and then brought her mouth guard, cleats, goggles and stick, along with her game face.  The photos are simple, on a black backdrop so as not to detract from the subject.  They are stunning.  I love what they show about (E), and that it might just encourage other girls to be whoever they are as well..

Take the Trip…

Posted on January 22, 2020 by RocklandNYMom Posted in Birthdays, Health and Wellness, Money Momma, Opportunities, Reviews, RNYM's Picks, Self Care, Services, Things to Do!, Thoughts.., Travel .

Disclosure:  This is a sponsored post.  All opinions expressed are my own.

A little while ago, I posted about how I am done giving gifts of “things” and am moving toward gifts of time and experience.  I am about to turn 40. I don’t only believe in time and experience for others, I do for myself too.  I’ve always dreamed of traveling, especially to Europe, but everywhere.  For one reason or another it just hasn’t happened.  Well with 40 knocking on my door I decided to do something about it.

EDIT TO ADD:  I wrote and was supposed to post this article early fall, but I am kind of glad that I didn’t.  Due to normal “Life” situations, I am more glad than ever that we got a chance to do Disney this year as well as to have taken this trip myself.  I do not know when the next time I will be able to take the family on a trip or go myself might be able to happen.  Those who know me know that I am not exaggerating, my new advice…..When you have the chance, Do it.  I intend to try to figure out how to continue to travel, and bring the family along, but its going to take a whole lot more work now.

Due to unforeseen circumstances RNYD was not available to travel (which is cool anyway cause he’s much more of a home body), so I begged my bestie Michelle to come with me.  I gave her a list of places on my bucket list and let her choose.  I also wanted to hit up a cruise if possible because I have never done one.  She was game, and she choose Greece.  Perfect for a cruise, and really one of my top two trips.

We picked a cruise and booked it, since it left and returned to Rome and neither of us knew when we would be back, we decided to take 2 days to explore there as well.

Here’s what I’ve learned.

  1.  I will never book a trip with a travel agent other than Scott Walters (sorry dudes say what you will, he’s bailed me out 2x now).
  2. Cruises are great because you don’t have to pack up your stuff every day to move, you have a home base.
  3. You can make friends on cruises, which is neat for when you are done sightseeing for the day you can meet for dinner/drinks/dancing later.
  4. Get the drink package (just saying)
  5. Try all the different foods
  6. Clarks are the best sandals ever (and yes you can find some that don’t look like your grandmothers shoes).
  7. Greece is REALLY HOT in the summer so May or September may be better.
  8. I AM OBSESSED WITH TRAVEL.

At each of the islands we went to Scott sent us 2-3 excursions that he thought we would like based on our “profiles” and we chose 1-2 for each.  The tours that we took were so complete that I actually don’t think we missed anything, BUT we didn’t have tons of time so it was more like a taste test, I may have a list of places that I’d like to get back to if I ever check off my list the other trips I want to take.

Travel Agent Extraordinaire Scott Walters helped  me out immensely on this trip, and I am so grateful.  I have just reached out to him again, about a possible trip for 2021, that I would like to start saving for.  I am so excited, and hopeful that we can make it happen despite our challenges.  He’s been super helpful in understanding and helping us with the physical needs of our family, and I am hoping that his expert advise will help us to be able to make the trip happen for our whole family.

It’s YOUR VACATION, let me do the work!  Worth noting here that I always thought I couldn’t afford a travel agent.  Turns out that you don’ t pay one, they are paid by the people they book your trip with.  The few times I have reached out to him to see if he should be consulted about a trip and he couldn’t help me with a deal, he encouraged me to book on my own to save the money.

To a Cleaner, Healthier 2020

Do you have anyone in your house with breathing issues due to Asthma and Allergies?  When was the last time you changed out your pillows?

Little (E) was one of those unlucky kiddos that ended up with RSV when she was an infant.  As a result she has asthma, luckily the kind that she’s supposed to grow out of, and it IS getting better.  When she get sick though, she goes from about zero to 100 in an hour.  A little cough can become pneumonia over night.

Over the years we’ve done things to help he with her allergies and asthma, like for instance she has an air purifier near her bed, got a vacuum with a hepa filter, installed a filter in our AC System, and also use non chemical cleaning aids.  She is under a pulmonologist’s care, and we do have instructions for when she starts to get sick.  Don’t ask me why I’ve never attacked her pillows before, because it makes sense.

The Average Household Pillow

(information from Spry therapeutics website)
  • The average pillow has 1 million spores and as many as 16 types of fungus.
  • After 12-18 months, a new hospital pillow is heavier due to human waste buildup inside the pillow.
  • The average pillow is used for about 3,000 hours each year, and with that comes 20 gallons of sweat.

This information has me acting like Leia on Endor “Somehow i’ve always known…”

Sooo, when I heard about Spry Theraputics and their PURE line I was intrigued. Their Nano-barrier keeps out allergens, viruses, and bacteria, while allowing the pillow to breathe.  So, that thing that my kid puts her head on every night wont be continually soaking up all the grossness that comes to bed with her.  Additionally, it won’t be spewing harmful bacteria back into the air as she lays her head on it like her current pillows are.  You don’t have to wash them, except maybe topically with water, which is awesome because I can’t tell you how many times I’ve washed a pillow and prayed that it’s dry on the inside… The pillow is water proof, so sweat doesn’t get absorbed either making it heavy and gross, or allowing bacteria to grow.

BUUUUUUT,  are they comfortable?  Yeeep.  The benefits are so great that I am wondering how all hospitals aren’t making the switch, especially during the current season of cold, flu and the dreaded RSV.  My daughter now refuses to sleep without her “asthma” pillow.  It was actually difficult for me to get the pillow so that I could try it out for a while, since my 6 year old reported that it was comfortable, and that she loves it, but I don’t feel like it was enough.  I wanted to be able to speak for myself, to give you all a better idea.  After all, this isn’t a regular old pillow, its an investment.  Also worth noting that it comes in memory foam or polyfill and we have the fill (which is recommended for little people).

The pillow is light, and even the fill is plenty supportive (for my head).  I don’t find it to feel “facility” like at all.  With the case on it, it really feels just like a regular pillow, but I did really enjoy my sleep.  My pillows are of course old and tattered, so this would ABSOLUTELY be an upgrade for me.

My conclusion.  We’ve had the pillow about a month.  (E) enjoys sleeping on it, and because of that I am going to replace all her pillows with it.  I can think of a handful of people in my life who would really benefit from this.  My mother who seems to always end up with breathing stuff (that’s just how she get sick), a few of my in-laws who also suffer from asthma and allergies, and even myself- and my son who don’t but I’d like us to live cleaner healthier lives.

EDIT:  Over this holiday break BOTH of my kids ended up with respiratory sicknesses.  My daughter recovered rather quickly, my son has been on antibiotics for 4 days, and finally went back to school this morning, only to be sent home for coughing.  I am currently throwing out my old pillows and replacing them with these spryPURE pillows.

A Big Decision

When my kids started swimming with Condors, it was only (A) because he was the only one who was potty trained, so its been some time. (E) has been with them ever since she was.  They have both moved up the ranks in Learn to Swim under the guidance of Ms. Ashley Telesmanic for 5 years now.  (E) is on pre-team increasing her stamina while also working on fine tuning her strokes, she’s 6.  (A) moved from pre-team to future stars past year (at 8) and was just moved up to Bronze.

For those who are unaware what means, it means that he was moved to the REAL SWIM team. Big, HUGE deal for (A) who has always loved swimming for fun but has always been adamant that he doesn’t want to compete.  This move, it required a long honest conversation, that I wasn’t sure my little man (now 9) was capable of having.

The good news is that thanks to Ms. Ashley there is another option called Technique and Fitness, its for the kids who have surpassed Learn to Swim, who want to come and workout in the water, and work on skills but don’t have the desire to compete.  So when we had the discussion we talked about that option.  In fact, I was fairly certain that is the way he was going to want to go.

He surprised the heck out of me.  He wanted to push himself.  To the tune of 4 workouts a week for over an hour each, which is way more than the 1/2 hour he was doing on future stars.  Also, eventually he would have to compete, which he didn’t want.  Well he’s changed his mind and would like to do ONE event at the first event to get the nerves out (that’s MID-OCTOBER!!!).

We decided to go to practice the first week to be sure he could handle the increased time and demands of Bronze, before fully committing and purchasing the uniform.  He did the first day and asked to return two days later, then was upset that he couldn’t go that Friday due to a school conflict.  That was it, he was hooked.  We went to uniform night and ordered his jammers, shirts, and personalized swim cap.  He’s a swimmer.  I don’t know where this is leading, or if it will become anything, but he is enjoying it, and we are supporting it.  He wants to compete and we will be there to cheer him on every step of the way.  I am thankful for the opportunity and the advice that Ms. Ashley has given us to get to this point. The time she has taken to get to know my children to help them to continue to learn and grow within the program, and ever so sorry that we are almost complete with our time with her.

Here is a photo of him after his first full hour practice, he hasn’t stopped smiling, he loves it and its been weeks. He’s in love, and maybe he’s found his niche.  If so I am so excited that he has found his love, if not, im so super glad that he has tried it.  I just want him (them) to have something that they love, and to be happy and healthy.  Well, it looks like we are well on our way. :o)

On a Roll with New City School of Music

Posted on August 13, 2019 by RocklandNYMom Posted in Classes, Reviews .

Disclaimer:  This is a sponsored post.  All opinions expressed are our own.

It’s no secret that kids who study music do better in school, there have been several articles written about it.  There are so many benefits to music education, too many to mention.  To us that stuff is all secondary.  Watching our son do something he loves, something he feels, and something that he is just growing at by leaps and bounds, that is the truest benefit there is.  Our son isn’t just playing a steady beat through a song anymore (which is REALLY hard as I found out at parent participation class last week), he is CREATING, switching tempos, and even working on some showmanship (slowly).

By: RNYDad

(A)’s concerts are both incredibly exciting, and incredibly nerve-racking for me. I enjoy helping him prepare, and I enjoy seeing how much he loves to play. Unfortunately, the nervous father in me cannot help but well…be nervous. With the help of his fantastic teacher Andrew Klein, and the New City School of Music (A) is killing it on the drums.

For his June performance (A) brought a few ideas to Andrew, so that they could decide on a piece that both tests his skill while still connecting with Aidan. This time, (A) got to play a song by his favorite band Weezer. He chose “Beverly Hills”. It was the perfect choice for him, it pushed his ability and it made practicing fun.

The day of the performance Aidan was cool as can be. He walked up to the kit and played better than I could have hoped. He has an easy confidence about his playing (thanks to the numerous opportunities he has had to perform already). When he saw us filming the performance, he gave us a funny smile as if to say, “I’ve got this”. He even created his own drum fills for the outro. His musicianship is growing at a pace that I just didn’t think possible, especially not so young. I proudly sent the video out to my musician friends and they mostly responded by questioning both his age (he can’t be 8, right?) and if I lock him in his room hours a day with his drum kit.

I strongly attribute his success to The New City School of Music, and his teacher Andrew Klein. I remember taking music lessons as a kid and thinking my teacher was just out to torture me. (A) is always excited to go to his lessons. He sees Andrew as his friend, and mentor, his guide through the world of drums and percussion.  It’s exactly what I always hoped to see in a student/teacher relationship.

Check out the video…. Andrew is on the stairs behind him (you might have been able to figure that out by his ear to ear smile).

The Highlight of my Musical Career- RNYD

Posted on June 18, 2019 by RocklandNYMom Posted in Classes, Reviews .

Disclosure:  This is a sponsored post, all opinions expressed are my own.

RNYD wrote this one for you all.  Thought you might like to hear from him.  It’s worth noting before you read, that RNYD has music credits on actual albums.  Additionally, he and I were in an actual band together when we were first married (no offense taken to his “Highlight” comment, I get it).  We knew we wanted our kids to be into music, and maybe even play an instrument.  We weren’t quite prepared for this.

Every musician dreams of jamming with their children when they grow up. Playing music for a musician goes beyond reading notes on a page and counting 4 beats to a measure. You connect with the people in your band. You support each other, you must listen and react to them. If all goes well, you create some great music. This past December, I had the pleasure of being my 8-year-old son (A)’s bass player and it was the absolute highlight of my musical career.

(A)’s and his teacher Andrew stopped me at the end of his lesson one Monday and said, “would you be willing to play with Aidan at his recital in December”? “Are you guys kidding, of course I will”! We were playing Aidan’s favorite Ramones song. I could see Aidan was excited, and he knew I was excited. It was pretty cool. That night after dinner, I wrote out a chart so that the next evening I was ready to go. We spent hours and hours rehearsing, listening to the song, and talking about the arrangement. Some of it was tough, but 98% of it was a blast. (A) got to see how I ready myself for a performance. I’d play for hours on my own. I was terrified of making a mistake. I’m ok if a mistake makes me look bad, but if I made a mistake this time…I’d make him look bad.

The day of the performance came, and I was more nervous than he was. I never thought I’d be nervous about playing a Ramones song…unless of course I was playing with the actual Ramones. I played the song at least 25 times that morning. (A) was surprisingly calm. As we were walking up to the front to perform, I was the most nervous I had ever been to play music in my entire life (I’ve been playing in front of people since I was 8…in 1984). I sat down, plugged my bass and gave (A) a sly smile. He counted us in and we nailed it. If I closed my eyes, I never would have known that my band mate, my son, was 8. When we finished (A) looked over and smiled at me. After we spoke to the 12 family members who came for the performance, he thanked me for playing with him. I thanked him for the opportunity and told him one day he’d understand how special that was for me. How many Dad’s can say they got to play a Ramones song with their kid?

I can’t thank Andrew Klein and The New City Music School enough. They have taken a kid with a passion for music and turned him into a musician. Now (A) and I get to not only listen to music together, but we get to jam together as well.

He’s playing a Weezer song this weekend without me, but we are already talking about what we are going to do for the December recital. Keep your eye out for that review…it’s going to be awesome!

As a special for our readers, if you register by Saturday June 30th and mention Rockland NY Mom, we’ll waive the $55 registration fee!

Selling your home is personal.  No matter what the reason you are leaving your special place (upgrade, downgrade, relocation, etc) you are allowing someone to speak for and sell your home.  THIS IS A BIG DECISION.  And let’s face it, there are so many choices that you can go with.  Many of the names you have seen for years, and seen EVERYWHERE!  Does that make them better?

She has closed over 55 transactions in the last 12 months.

Sheri also has a company that does pre-home inspections that can bring to you attention any issues that may arise during the process so that you are aware, and can either fix them or price your house accordingly.

Right now prices are going way up.  It’s truly a seller’s market, especially when you use a broker like Sheri who can price your house appropriately to entice buyers to come and see it, and make an offer.  There have recently been bidding wars.

Here are some of the additional benefits of booking with a boutique agency like SOHN.

  • Flexibility in making a deal work
  • One on one personal support
  • Family atmosphere
  • Flexibility in method of Advertising (video, social media, print, fliers, and more)

A glance at her testimonial page tells you just how personalized and dedicated Sheri is to her clients. https://sohnrealestate.com/testimonials/

“Sheri gets deals done and goes beyond the call of duty of a normal agent. She helped us make sure the property was ready for sale and as an absentee landlord she really made the difference. She is quite pleasant to work with and is deeply knowledgeable about the marketplace. Big Thumbs up!!” -Dean M. Fort Lauderdale

If you contact Sheri to list your home and mention RocklandNYMom you will receive a FREE pre-home inspection by a licensed home inspector.
