Four Stars for Movie House Paramus

Posted on July 26, 2023 by RocklandNYMom Posted in Birthdays, Day Trips, Day Trips, Events, Out and about..., Photography, Reviews .

Disclosure:  This is a sponsored post.  All opinions expressed are my own.

My kids are getting older, and I am looking for more and more activities that I can do with them, or activities that might be fun with friends. They are at an age where they may want to get dropped off somewhere and adventure on their own now. Have some independence-  but I still like to know that we can spend some time together, and that if they are going out there, that what they are doing is safe and wholesome to a degree.

This past Friday we were invited to check out the Movie House in the Paramus Park Mall.  When I read the description I quickly realized that it was the perfect place to spend some time together.

What is it?

Movie House features 10 intricately themed rooms, each filled with captivating details, collectibles and hidden surprises.  From Willy Wonka to Harry Potter, Top Gun to Alice in Wonderland guests can lose themselves in the magic of the films they know and love.  Test your knowledge with room-specific questions and indulge in the immersive environments, from sandy beaches to enchanted forests.

How was our visit?

I love this experience because the Paramus Park Mall is so easy to get to, and I always feel safe there with the kids.  Movie House is easy to find on the ground floor of the mall underneath the food court.  We parked outside of the Old Navy and were able to walk straight in.

The visit comes with a guide to walk you through moving from room to room, but they don’t pressure you to move on, you’ve got plenty of time to take your Instagrammable Photos, test your knowledge and enjoy the moment.  In fact, you can circle back afterwards if you would like.  Which is especially lovely when they give you a little bag of popcorn to enjoy.

The movies chosen for each room are relevant and enjoyable for all ages.  A family that loves to dress up, we had fun putting on hats, robes, eye patches and more.  We were surprised and loved walking into the Blockbuster video store where us adults were struck with some major nostalgia, and we explained what it was to the kids.  Loved it so much I had to snap a photo of (A) and send it home to RNYDad.

Although walking through and taking photos etc is fun, I was inspired when we saw the screening room.  Fun and comfy to stop in with the family and watch the movie that was on at the time (Dr. Strange).  Immediately I thought, this would be the perfect place to have a birthday party for my now “tween” daughter.  She and her friends could run around and take photos in each of the rooms, and screen a movie “under the stars” in the screening room.  It’s a great way to have a run time, and not worry about the weather (as I end up doing when I throw backyard parties). NO mess to clean up at my house afterwards, no need to spend extra money on photo op props that I have to find homes for afterwards.  I inquired about this when we exited and YES they do it.  You even talk to them about the group and choose an appropriate movie to show.

This means that the possibilities are literally endless.  It’s the perfect activity for really hot, or rainy days during the summer.  You can go as a family, group of friends, or host a party/event for groups!  You choose your tickets and time slot online- it’s so easy.

It took us about an hour and fifteen minutes to get through the experience.  We took our Great Aunt, and everyone was raving about what a great time it was.  We ran right upstairs afterwards to grab a bite to eat before heading home.

What I love

  • It was fun with family, but I would feel comfortable with my kids going with a group of friends.
  • There are possibilities and enough things to keep every age occupied (we ranged ages 10-67 when we went).
  • The staff was super friendly.
  • The experience was clean- well kept.
  • Affordable outing for a family
  • The kids were excited to head to the next room and see what it was- no complaining happened.
  • The possibilities for groups, events and parties.

“A Christmas Story House”

As (A) was selected to attend the trip to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame with his music school, New City School of Music, we knew right away that we would want to make a family trip out of it (when will we ever have the chance to come back).  I reached out to friends and also my favorite reference, Pinterest, in order to find cool things we had to see, and do.  I will OF COURSE be blogging about all of it.  The first one is the house from the movie “A Christmas Story“.

WARDROBE

I am a HUGE dork as you know, and my kids are getting older FAST.  I had the opportunity to put together some “themed” clothing items and took advantage of it.  I am fully aware that soon enough they won’t allow me to do so, so I did it now (stay tuned for the outfits for our other stops).

The kids got customized gear because I have a circuit so WHY NOT?!

For (A) I of course had to play on “you’ll shoot your eye out”.

For (E) the pink nightmare was PERFECTION.  We did a play on the classic bunny suit scene, and since my little horror loving gal likes creepy things we thought this was befitting.

RNYD and I went more classic.  He got a plaid button down shirt to play on the time frame of the movie, as well as to kind of be less dorky (he puts up with me only half willingly).  I used his shirt to tie the ensemble together (special thanks to my girls including RNYM Account Manager Sofija to helping me there).

For myself we decided to go classic, with a 50’s themed dress  <3

EXPERIENCE

We purchased our tickets before heading out to Cleveland so that I could put them out that day for the kids.  They are super affordable.  I also keep the clothing a secret having packed them in their bags without their knowledge.  I love that they can wear them again this holiday season too :o)

There is a small amount of off street parking next to the house.

When we got there we went straight to the house to check it out.  You have to have tickets to do this, if you didn’t purchase in advance, you have to go to the store to get them before you can enter. The staff allows you a certain amount of time to walk around and “experience’ the house, check things out and recreate specific scenes that you recall.

You can touch all the things  <3

At your scheduled time they call you all together and you learn about the movie and the house, then you get a tour of the outside, the firehouse, museum, and garages.

Seeing all the memorabilia was really cool, but I especially loved the fan art that they display.

You finally finish up in the souvenir shop.  THERE ARE SO MANY FUN THINGS this takes time, and restraint :o)  We could have purchased everything, but we chose a few special items for the kids (nope no leg lamp, no bb gun).  The kids each brought money they were able to use for something special and RNYD and I supplemented a bit, of course, we purchased an ornament for the tree to commemorate the experience (which we always do).

`

COOL SIDE NOTES

This is a great place to maybe take those “Christmas Card” photos- the staff is super kind and everyone there was so nice, and willing to help you if you wanted a family pic.

They do special events for Christmas in July- check them out if you are considering a visit.

You can RENT the house like a hotel, or the Bumpus’ house next door.  We really enjoyed Cleveland and its not 100% off the table as a future possibility.

BASICally the Perfect INVITE!

Posted on April 25, 2021 by RocklandNYMom Posted in Birthdays, Events, Items, Party, Photo Obsessed, Reviews, RNYM Events, Rockland Babies, Services, Specialty Items, We're Having a Party .

Disclosure:  This is a sponsored post, all opinions expressed are my own.

I am a High School Teacher.  More specifically, a teacher of Senior students.  It stands to reason then that at this time of year (every year) I am very focused on Senior events.  All which culminate in the big event, graduation.

Last year the kids didn’t get much leeway in terms of celebrating.  This year, we are able to again have some gatherings, especially when outdoors, and distanced in some way.  Having just spent a year (give or take a few months) with so many restrictions, it’s no wonder that people may be doing things up a bit more than usual.

Well, it’s almost MAY and time to get planning.  I know that lots of people have made the switch to online invitation platforms, but I still LOVE a paper invitation.  In fact, if you follow me you know that I am VERY picky about my invitations.  I like them to usually be photograph invitations for that personal touch (also makes a nice memory), something you can really personalize (180 colors- and you can customize EACH element on the card).  In addition, I like the invite itself to be of sturdy card stock.  There is something about receiving a card or invitation in the mail, that is made of nice thick card stock.

So, as always I will share a favorite with you, and then explain why.  You need to check out Basic Invite.  Their invitations, announcements, photo graduation announcements etc are completely customizable. While looking around I found that they had some really cute nurse graduation announcement choices as well (quite a few of my students go into nursing)!  They are printed on sturdy card stock, attractive and fast, but there’s more.  There are 40 different color choices for envelopes (which are also peel and stick, thank goodness)- so your envelope can coordinate with your card!!

There are also these SUPER cool clear (we called them see-through) ones you can order!!!

Basic Invite has great customer service, and even a service where they ADDRESS the cards for you!  Don’t have time to upload them?  There’s also an address capturing service!!!  As a super busy working mom, this is HUGE!  This allows you  to share a link on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, or any other social media to request your friends and family’s addresses. The addresses are stored in your account and can be selected during the design process. Basic Invite offers recipient address printing at no cost on all card orders!!

Then ANY TIME you are sending cards (think parties, announcements, holidays) you can click on the people you want to send the correspondence to and BAM, Done. For me personally, this is AMAZING, it’s hard enough to find time to design all of these things let alone sit and write them all out.

My 5th grader is also “graduating” this year.  So it’s even more on my mind.  We may do a small family event to celebrate for him (think immediate family BBQ), since he is missing so much. Well, it stands to reason that I would need to look at invitations or a grad announcement.  I was able to find a few that I liked, customize them just the way that I wanted, and then order SAMPLES to see which I would like the best, yep that’s right custom samples!  Changing colors and fonts as well as the style or card was super easy, you do not have to be super computer savvy to do it.  I even let AJ customize one (can you guess which one?).  Uploading the photos was also easy as pie.  I was given an ETA of one week and they arrived as promised.  You may have watched me unveil them on our social media stories.  Excuse the cell phone photo, I couldn’t help myself… The quality is impeccable, in fact, we have decided to make my new nephews birth announcements with Basic Invite as well.  ANNNNNND, we may have fallen in love with this Birthday Invite…

Let’s get social!  If you want to see more Basic Invite check them out on their social media handles: Facebook –Pinterest –Instagram –Twitter!

I (of course) have a discount code for you too!! Right now Basic Invite is offering 15% off with coupon code: 15FF51

Communion Prep Begins! Saying “Yes” to the Dress!

Posted on March 23, 2021 by RocklandNYMom Posted in Events, Party, Reviews, Services, Shopping, Specialty Items .

Disclosure:  This is an unsponsored post.  We simply got an appointment at this amazing shop and wanted to share.

With E’s health issues at the forefront of our mind we needed to start making preparations for her First Holy Communion.  Although we are still unsure of what it will look like for her, we wanted to make it as special as possible.  E loves fashion, she chooses my clothing most days.  I knew she would want an extra special experience for her dress shopping.  I researched a few places that we could take her, and decided on Little Nikki’s in Ho Ho Kus NJ.  It’s less than a half hour away from us here in Rockland, and the shop just looked special.

Well I was right.  I emailed to make an appointment, hoping that we could do it safely and solo.  Well, that’s the only way they do it.  You book a 1 3/4 hour time slot and its just you and whomever you would like to bring.  We decided to invite the ladies in the family.  The whole making of the appointment was easy as pie.

The day of we showed up and what a CUTE SHOP!  So many beautiful dresses, I wish my wedding shopping had been this sweet!!!  You start by getting a quick tour of where to find things, and then a rolling rack that you can add any dresses you are looking to try on to.

Once we selected the options that we liked, E and I went to start the fashion show.  There are shoes you can wear while trying for effect, and of course we had to try the HEELS!

We tried so many variations of dress (there is really something for everybody) from layered, to eyelet lace, to classic, to prairie style. Our second runner up even had POCKETS!!!  It is not easy to decide (especially when you have a lot of opinions).

Here is what I LOVED.  As we modeled, the owner watched carefully, and provided some input but watched more carefully.  She waited for E to have a reaction.  She knew when E had chosen a dress before I did.  She came right in and completed the look with a veil and a tiara (how did she know E was a tiara gal?), and that was it.  I couldn’t believe my eyes, and neither could E.  We were sold.

After we made the decision we got to go over to the adorable photo-op area (now you’re speaking my language) to take “Said Yes to the Dress” pic ( I am saving the dress one because I want it to fit well when you see it).  What a great experience!!!  As always, should you decide to go to Little Nikki’s we appreciate you letting them know you heard it here.

What was even better, is that my sister is due with baby #2 in April, and so we walked next door to check out the fabulous collection of Baptism clothing as well, something tells me this is not our last trip :o)

Sparkle Up in New City holds kids parties, does hair cuts and style for both boys and girls (even grown ups), and holds many events. Don’t forget to check out their Facebook page for updates!

The Doll and me Style, was the recent event at Sparkle Up. Similar to American Girl Doll in NYC (but at a fraction of the cost), the girls got to bring their dolls and they both could get their hair done.

Nails were also a dolly and me experience.  Sparkle Up uses special nail polish on both girls and dolls that is safe for them.

The girls also got to dress up in fun costumes and got to get some awesome sparkle tattoos.

There was also a fun photo shoot where the kids got to show of their make over as well as their dolls. The event was really fun, and it was really awesome to see all the smiles. So thank you to all the moms and parents for giving me permission to take photos! It was a really fun afternoon to see the girls dress up and coordinate with their dolls

.

The next event for Sparkle Up! is…

Sunday 3/10/19 from 12-1:30 pm

Decorate a pony to take home, have your hair done “pretty Pony” style, paint your nails and have your face paint done too!! Cost $25 per child call 634-0140 to register!!

WESTCHESTER BROADWAY THEATRE IS PROUD TO PRESENT
Ain’t Misbehavin’

What can I say but WOW.  RocklandNYMom.com was invited for Press Night for this amazing show, and that’s all I can think of to say.  I took my mom, who had her very first experience with WBT a few months ago, and she was so excited to join me.   From walking into the show, being greeted at the front desk to our seats (which were amazing, not that they have a single bad seat in the house), we had a blast.

Lets start with the food.  The menu was mouth watering.  My mother and I had a hard time selecting our meals.  She has many dietary restrictions, and they were able to tweak the Broiled Fillet of Sole, leaving off the lemon butter sauce and she was super happy.  She said the fillet was moist and tasted wonderful (and didn’t think the sauce was needed).  I am a chicken eater, and the Chicken Marsala was very well done.  I was so happy with it – in fact had such a hard time finishing it with all the food they give you (a starter salad, with a roll and corn bread, our main dish followed with coffee and dessert).  But don’t you worry, I took my leftovers home for the next days lunch, and it did not disappoint then either.

You have the option to order extra appetizers, which we did not.  We did discuss the luxury desserts (which they serve during intermission), but mom was super happy with the dessert that was provided to us, and honestly I was so full – there was no room for anything else.  The couple sitting next to us had the French Onion Soup – so of course I had to ask about it, which I was told was amazing.  It will have to be added to my order during my next visit for sure.

Once we were done eating, and all settled in, the show began – promptly at 8pm, and it did not disappoint.  A great way to start off Black History Month.  The performers sang the entire show, since this is not your ordinary “show”, and engaged with the audience to make us laugh.  The chemistry amongst the performers was apparent, and the hard work that they put into the show left me breathless and wanting more.  I walked into the show knowing very little about what was going to happen, or what it was about, and left a HUGE fan.  You will want to sing along to the songs, tap your feet to the amazing beat, and jump up to dance (which is not aloud), but will have a blast.

If your looking for a show – that is not like the others.  Which takes a whole different approach – then you have a few weeks to see Ain’t Misbehavin’, and trust me when I say you will not be disappointed in anything that the WBT brings to you during your show experience.  Don’t forget to mention RocklandNYMom to get a discount – and let us know how your experience was.

Here’s a little background information. Also, stay tuned because we are trying to bring you a SPECIAL experience for their upcoming showings of Newsies which is RNYM’s favorite since she was a kid!!!

Halloween at Jills Ceramics!

Posted on September 16, 2018 by RocklandNYMom Posted in Classes, Crafts, Day Trips, Events, Out and about..., Party, Reviews, RNYM Events, Things to Do! .

Disclosure:  This is a sponsored post.  All opinions expressed are my own.

We adore our adventures around town together.  One that we end up doing quite often is visiting Jill of Jill’s Caramics.  We’ve spent so much time there in fact that my kids hug and kiss her every time we go.  That’s Jill.  She adores kids.  She’s been celebrating birthdays and crafting with kids in Rockland County for over 30 years.

We celebrate almost every holiday there, and have been creating the handprint art I so love together since (A) was 1.  When we had two days off in the beginning of September and an event coming up for Halloween we thought it was the perfect time to pay Jill a visit. The kids were allowed to each paint one thing they chose, but then I had another little project in mind… no surprise there it was made with their handprints.

I love walking around and looking at all the items that Jill has to paint.  The possibilities are endless.  Although I knew what I wanted the handprints to be I wasn’t sure what piece I wanted to put it onto until I walked around a bit and looked around.  Then in the back I saw the perfect plates.

I brought them over to Jill and told her my idea.  She LOVED it.  She’s always willing to give a crazy idea of mine a try.  The kids got to paint the backgrounds.  I really like that we didn’t really section off the colors for them, so each is a little off, just the way the kids wanted it.

That’s when Jill got to work.  She painted their hands and helped each child place it on the plate.

Once that was complete Jill started adding the embellishments to each hand to turn them into their intended characters.

Finally we had Halloween plates with the handprints of my little monsters <3

Since we opted for the Glaze this time, we had to leave them and come back a week later; after they were baked in the kiln.  When I went to pick them up I was so excited.  They are absolutely perfect.  They fit right in my plate holder, and as always, they are beautiful.

I’m so looking forward to our next family projects.  The kids then painted a puppy and a battleship, and their Aunt Shannon made an adorable little pumpkin tea light holder.  Experiences like these are the reason why I am so excited to share with our readers, and to help organize events for everyone.

In fact, we have a family event on 10/20 with two sessions 10-12 and 1-3.  We prefer that you RSVP to these events so that we have enough space for everyone, and you don’t need to show up at the beginning of your session, people come and go throughout. You can paint anything you’d like, but we call it a Halloween event because Jill has lots of super fun themed pieces for the Holiday.  Price varies by size of piece, and fluctuates slightly if you choose to Glaze rather than craft paint. To RSVP and/or order a pumpkin please either post in the Facebook event or email Rocklandnymom@yahoo.com .

https://www.facebook.com/events/234432913901908/

We also have a parents night out event scheduled for 10/24 from 7-9 where adults can come and paint any piece they would like.  Jill does make these super cool custom large pumpkins with light sets that we love though, so we are doing a special order for them.  They are $50 and must be ordered in advance so that she can make them (takes a week to make each one for us) in time for the event.  Due to the customized nature of the project its necessary that you pay us in advance for these pieces.  10 characters or less work best.  To RSVP and/or order a pumpkin please either post in the Facebook event or email Rocklandnymom@yahoo.com .

*As always, if you choose to go see Jill, we appreciate letting her know you heard it here. :o) *

JCC Rockland Fitness Center- Your One Stop Fitness Shop

We adore JCC Rockland and what they offer to the community.  Their Early Childhood Center is top notch, Camp offerings that are diverse and engaging, Fitness 450 and their fitness center.  I know that even with all I have mentioned, I have only scratched the surface.  I was recently invited to come back and tour the new and improved fitness manager with Lauren.  If you are interested they are having a Love Yourself Love Your Health open house with free classes for BOTH kids and adults on Monday 2/19/18 (JCCROCKLAND.ORG/LOVERSVP).

JCC FItness 1

The center looks very different immediately with a fresh coat of paint and new flooring, but the changes that have been made are more than just superficial.  When you first walk in on the left hand side, there is a whole new circuit of high tech machines from TechnoGym that have just been added.  JCC FItness 4

JCC Fitness 3

These machines are beyond cool.  They are resistance based, so they glide along with your abilities, and each machine has one specific exercise.  This enables users to complete a circuit, and helps with eliminating lines at certain machines.  It gets better.  The machines have small screens on them that serve several purposes.

JCC Fitness 2

They have instructions as to how to set up and  use each of the pieces of equipment safely, and correctly.  Once in use, there is a fun little graphic that looks kind of like a video game to keep you working at optimum levels.  What I really love is that it also has the capability to sync with your JCC Rockland App and track your progress, movements, and record your workouts.  This App also works alongside the trainers at the Fitness Center to create your workouts in the Smart Start Program, or the Fitness Challenges (coming 3/25).  Additionally you can check out what classes are coming up and set reminders to attend (which is really cool cause they offer SO many classes).

JCC Fitness 5

The fitness center is immaculate and includes specific rooms where you can stretch, lift free weights, train for various competitions, and take their WIDE array of classes (click here).  What really attracts me to it, is how impeccable the space is.  Taken care of so well offering equipment to meet the needs of all ages and stages.  No matter what your fitness level there is so much available to challenge you within safe parameters.  Having had 3 major knee surgeries myself, I was particularly interested in the cardio equipment that would allow me to work on endurance without putting excess pressure on my knees.  Like this this Bike that they have even allows you to switch your terrain and follow a trail.  All the while tracking your progress and your stats.

JCC Fitness 6

For busy parents looking to add a workout into their busy days but having difficulty finding the time, they even have babysitting for the kids so that you can get your “Me Time” in.

If you are interested in checking out the Fitness Center this week there is a perfect opportunity.

If you are anything like me you ADORE Luigi O’Grady’s.  In fact, when I had my children my “push present” both times was a roast beef sandwich from then, brought to the hospital (yep).  I cater everything with Michelle’s help.  I’ve done Superbowl, Birthday Parties, Christmas, Breakfast- you name it Michelle and her crew have cooked it for me.  What’s better?  It’s all been done to rave reviews.

Well, now you can have you WHOLE EVENT planned and taken care of by Michelle and her staff at the Sons of Italy Blauvelt.  Yep that’s right they have become the exclusive caterers for the hall.

Sons of Italy Flyer

The Sons of Italy is a full service catering hall.  Fully staffed events, high quality food and service, bar service is all included.

There are different packages to choose from and Michelle will work with you to meet all your needs as well as work with budgets.
She offers valuable insights with her extensive experience as well. I will never forget planning my first at home birthday party, I sent what I wanted over to Michelle and her response was, that’s all great choices, but its a lot of chicken, lets offer a little more variety.  She was SO right.  The guests adored the options available, and always ask where I got the food from.
I am so excited about this new development I could SCREAM!! From what I understand dates are filling up fast, so if you have something coming up reach out sooner than later.  I know because am looking to plan some fun stuff there for you all too ;o).
To speak to Michelle about  an event you can email her at info@luigiogradys.com or give a call at 845-735-9110.
STAY TUNED!!!
