New City School of Music- Review

Posted on September 8, 2015 by RocklandNYMom Posted in Classes, Reviews .

Disclosure:  This is a sponsored post as we were invited to try a lesson.  All opinions expressed are my own.

Back to school means many different things.  One is that many students are picking up instruments for the first time.  Some may be continuing their schooling and have decided that they would like to increase their knowledge base by taking private lessons.  It’s a common question asked by my readers, “where to take lessons”.

One local option that is fairly new is the New City School of Music.  We headed over to check it out at our earliest convenience.  The School boasts lovely facilities on North Main Street in New City.  They have available 7+ rooms for practicing, many already equipped with instruments for lessons.  If you need to rent an instrument they have that ability right through their website (click here).  The School has trained teachers who have a minimum of a bachelor’s degree in music and can instruct students in: voice, piano, drums, flute, saxophone, guitar, oboe, bassoon, trumpet, French horn, bass, violin, viola, cello, double bass, clarinet, trombone, baritone (euphonium) and tuba (yeah that’s pretty much everything).  Additionally, they hold a “Mommy & Me” class for students who are too young still for “traditional” music lessons.

Eager to get information for our readers, we signed (A) up for a lesson.  (A) is newly (5) so we decided to let the Music School decide which instrument would  be most appropriate for a student in his age bracket.  It was decided that the best place to begin would be with piano.  Although he has seen pianos before at the homes of relatives and fiddled with them, he has never played one.

During a Photo-shoot, (A) plays (I use the term loosely) his acoustic guitar.

We arrived for our lesson and met our teacher who was very welcoming.  Before they got started she took a moment to see how familiar (A) was with the instrument (not very).  They then went over some important points such as body position.  He learned how to refer to his fingers (which he seemed to have some difficulty with).  His instructor never got frustrated in fact (as a teacher myself) I was very impressed at the different ways that she activated his memory.  Not only did she show him, and then ask him, she then had him trace and draw the hands, and then she had him hide his hands and do it without looking. It wasn’t just memorizing (like the way I learned so many years ago).

Learning the correct way to count his fingers.

First Day of School 004

First Day of School 003

First Day of School 005

When she got to the part where she was talking about tempo and time, she had him get up and march along with the music before he attempted to replicate it.  This is a FANTASTIC approach for a 5 year old boy who has some trouble sitting and paying attention for the entire half hour class.

First Day of School 010

When the class had concluded I inquired about how many lessons would be good for him at his age and was impressed with the answer that he should only take 1 class a week.  I was sure that any school would answer that he should come as many times as possible so that he could practice, learn, and the school could make money, but they knew that he wouldn’t be able to sit and focus that often, and said that he should practice on his own at home.

Both RNYD and I studied instruments throughout our school careers.  We were even in a band together in adulthood.  Music is important to our family.  Of course I went with a slew of questions.  The most important however, was that of curriculum.   I wanted to know that my child was going to be challenged, and also learn how to perform, but I also wanted to know that they were going to help them to foster and protect a love of music.  We wanted to know that they would also encourage our children to be themselves, and to find a way to incorporate that into the lessons.

These questions and more were answered exactly as we had wanted.  They would learn somewhat traditionally, and would have a chance to perform, 3 TIMES A YEAR (not just the standard 1-2).  What stuck out the most though was the answer to curriculum.  Not only will they use “traditional” classical music, but they tap into child interests as well.  In fact, one reason why it is important for all of their teachers to have such a strong background in music is so that they can compose music for the students.  Without prompting I was told that another young man that they were working with had said that he wanted to learn how to play “Star Wars”.  They composed a version for him and he did learn to play it, during the process, he learned to play the piano.  It wasn’t boring, and he was encouraged to practice because he WANTED to learn it.  Thus fostering a love for the music, and for playing.

To be successful in learning an instrument it is imperative that a student practice.  This added incentive of enjoying what they are learning is a fabulous way to tap into those interests and encourage them to do so.

Dance Central- Review

Posted on August 20, 2015 by RocklandNYMom Posted in Classes, Classes for Kids, Reviews .

Disclosure: This is an unsponsored post.  Dance Central donated to the Gabi Rocks Neuroblastoma Party last year.  All opinions expressed are my own.

When (A) was born I was neurotic (more than I am even now believe it or not). He needed to be signed up for all sorts of classes; music, gym, art, you name it. I had always intended to do the same for (E), but as we all know, we can’t plan everything. (E) had a few small health hiccups and needed lots of different types of care. This made me afraid to sign her up for too many classes… Now that she is 2 and has overcome the majority of her issues I decided it was time to start getting her into some activities.

I was looking for a great active class for her and stumbled upon Dance Central’s Mommy and Me Dance Class for 6m-2y. We figured this was the perfect time to try it because as a teacher I am off for the summer and can do the class with her. Additionally, I have been watching their programs having decided to take (E) there for dance after they donated a year of classes to (A)’s schoolmate Gabi a year ago (see post). I have said since then that I wanted to be associated with a dance school who cared for children this much.

Dance Central 1

The class is run by Ms. Melissa who is fantastic with the kids. She has found ways to reach the kids and get them to remember how to do many of the different activities that we do in class.

IMG_6664

IMG_6693

The class requires parents or caregivers to be active participants so it is important that the accompanying adult be able to lift and tumble around a bit. That’s how the class begins, with us tumbling around together a bit (E) loves to do this (even more if we turn so she can see herself in the mirror).   This is followed by a few music numbers with hand motions (classics like wheels on the bus etc.). Aware that this age group doesn’t sit well for long we follow up with some “races” of different kinds that are geared towards strengthening the participants and helping with coordination.

The students then get to move on to an adorable little obstacle course, that ends with an individual trampoline (turned toward the mirror to (E)’s pleasure). To wrap up the class Ms. Melissa brings out some cool props to play with and everyone earns stickers when they sit quietly and wait patiently.

This is a great first class for (E). We even had two of our friends sign up and come along. The class is about 45 minutes, and in that time even attending just once a week (E) is already learning the routines and knows what to do if I say “hands in glue”. I no longer have to hold her on the balance beam (but still have difficulty tearing her away from that trampoline or mirror for that matter).

IMG_6756

dance central 5

We liked our first class so much that I had (E) try the class that is the next level up (2.5-4y) to see if she could handle it (No). They allowed her to try the class for free, and then afterward Ms. Melissa called me personally to talk to me about how she had done in the class, explaining the skills that (E) needed to acquire prior to enrolling.

I found Dance Central to be organized and accommodating, offering days for make-up classes should you go away on vacation for a bit. Even better is the cost of their programs. As many of you know, children’s classes can be VERY costly running an average of $20 a session. These sessions were less, so I wasn’t worried when we signed up, thinking that it was a fabulous bargain and an experience no matter what. We really had nothing to lose.

I am so very glad we went. We had a real blast. I cannot believe that the class is almost over! I am currently looking into the options for continuing this fall (there is mommy and me on Mondays and Saturdays). I love the feel of this place, it’s so friendly and family oriented, and the class was super fun too!!

For more information on Dance Central and all that it has to offer check out their website: http://www.dancecentralpa.com   or give them a call at: (845) 627-0595  Now is a great time to inquire, although there is no registration fee for the Mommy and Me class, there is for their more advanced classes and the fee is half off until tomorrow 8/21/2015.

Sidenote:

Make a day of it! The quaint town of Pearl River has so much to offer, one day after class (E) and her two friends (and mommies) decided to go grab a cup of coffee somewhere local. We walked over to Jane Café where the girls had juice boxes and cookies, while the mommies had cappuccino. We had such a blast that this became a weekly ritual.

A New Talent (or Addiction..)

Posted on August 19, 2015 by RocklandNYMom Posted in Classes, Crafts, Crafts and More Crafts, Reviews, Services, Specialty Items .

Disclosure:  This is a sponsored post as I was invited to a class with Underground Finds & Furniture.  All opinions expressed are my own.

You may recall that almost a year ago, I started painting (E)’s highchair and gave up sure that I wouldn’t be able to get it right.  At that time Mary of Underground Finds & Furniture came to my rescue and painted it for me at a super reasonable rate (click here).  Mary not only paints your requests, she looks for interesting pieces to paint for you, sells the paint so that you can do it yourself, but also offers classes.  Given our love for great sturdy and classic furniture we became fast friends.  So much so that when I went and purchased some furniture for (E)’s bedroom (coming soon), I brought her with me.  I intended to have her paint it for me (again convinced that I would fail), but she talked me into something a little different.

She wanted me to do it myself, but she said that she would teach me at one of her classes…. This is a big deal.  Tackling an entire bedroom isn’t something that I was prepared for nor did I have the time, or so I thought.

The furniture I found for (E)’s room:

Purchased these three main pieces from a North Rockland Swap Site.  These are the three I worked on at Mary’s workshop, the others I added afterwards because I am glutton for punishment ;o)

Short Dresser Before

The nightstand I found that coordinated for FREE on the side of the road.

When we showed up for class Mary was all set for us with plenty of space to work, and every supply that we needed.  Mary made sure that we had dusted and cleaned our pieces prior to our starting.  Then we discussed our vision.  I wanted to paint the furniture white, and then add a touch of pink to the details, all while keeping the style very shabby chic.  I had seen Mary do this on a previous piece that I adored.

Dresser Clean and Ready

I was nervous about the workload (naturally) so I brought my mother with me.  By the end of the day (yes the day) between my mother, Mary and Myself we were able to get two coats of  paint on and some of the pink detailing done.  Mary assured me that I was ready to complete the rest on my own.  This was the part that I was so very nervous about.  Most people complete their projects in the class time allotted so she is able to show them all of the steps involved.  While I was there  two other painters participated in the class.  One completed an adorable gossip chair, and the other a lovely headboard for her daughter.  (Usually Mary limits people to pieces that can be done in one class, in my case I was supposed to come back for another class, but our schedules didn’t mesh).  Mary assured me that she would be available for any questions and even offered for me to come to her HOUSE and work if I needed to.

Pink Detail Mirror

When Summer started I was finally able to work on my masterpieces.  Although the paint is soft enough to wax straight after drying, I wanted a smoother finish, and some distressing (which Mary has a trick for, I chose to do it the HARD way).   I used a fine sandpaper first, followed by a “SUPER-fine) sand paper.  Once pleased with the distressing I used the wax that Mary provided to seal it all in.  It feels as smooth as glass.  I adore it.  I had SEVERAL million questions and Mary was super quick to respond, and had ideas and hints for everything.  For instance:  I needed to find a matching drawer pull for a missing one on the set, she directed me to the right group!

I needed to add a little something to the bedframe to make it coordinate with the rest of the set so Mary suggested I get a wooden applique (you can find them at Home Depot, or Dykes Lumber).  I affixed them with Loctite wood glue, painted and distressed.  I LOVE THESE DETAILS!!

Adding the Applique

Adding E to Mirror

I worked for what seems like forever on these pieces but am so proud of the outcome.  (E) even got in on it and learned how to sand (there is a video on our YouTube channel because OH MY GOSH its cute).

Finding me Again…

Posted on July 21, 2015 by RocklandNYMom Posted in Classes, Reviews, RNYM's Picks, Specialty Items, Thoughts.. .

Disclosure:  This is an unsponsored post.  All opinions expressed are my own.

I do a lot of writing, and a lot of reviewing… I find that the most difficult things to write about are those that concern me. Of course, I am human, I am self-conscious, I am not perfect. I do however feel it necessary to share my most recent journey.

A while back I reviewed Fitness Kickboxing NY. I attended 3 classes and wrote about my experience. That was supposed to be it. After the classes were over I found myself upset that I would no longer be going to Fitness Kickboxing. But, I didn’t have the time, I felt guilty being away from the kids… I had all of the usual excuses…. Little did I know that I would enjoy the class so much that I would keep going. At first 2 times a week, and since then it has steadily increased. I am currently attending 5 days a week and missing it when I am not going on weekends.

Situp Smile July

I love it. I love the challenge, I love the camaraderie, I love the next day soreness, and of course I love the results. In 3 months I have lost 10 lbs (that was before I started behaving myself with my food), and have made VISABLE progress in problem areas. I have had TONS of comments. Friends and family have noticed so often that several of them have started coming with me. My clothing is fitting better, some not so much as I get too small and have to replace it ;0)

As a former athlete, I had basically given in and decided that my new role was as a mom, that I had a “new” body that was softer and rounder. I knew I could lose weight, but being limited as to what I can do as a result of my three knee surgeries, I didn’t think that I would ever return to my former shape. I was very wrong, I needed to find the right exercise. I am strong again. I stand up straighter, I have more confidence.

I have been so happy with my results that I have upped the ante. As a part of my training Amir is now sending me meal plans to follow. These meal plans (lessons on healthy eating that I now use for the whole family) paired with my training will really kick my results into high gear. I am so looking forward to that.

Classes are hard. I sweat (and love every minute). I am usually sore the following day, but I can now hold a plank for 45 seconds+. My muffin top is disappearing, and I am no longer ashamed to swim with my kids. There is also a room full of classmates who push you to make it through, and cheer you on.

megan kickbox

Amir listens to his students. When we have a problem area that we would like to work on, he finds a way to build it into that day’s class, or the following day’s class. In fact, today Ashley and I stayed afterwards and completed a portion of a squat challenge together.

Crunches

I attend the 6 am class. It’s the perfect way to start my day. I end up invigorated and ready to face the world. At the risk of sounding cliché I have to add that the energy built from exercising then carries me through the day. It gives me the necessary release to be happier with everything I do. RNYD is so pleased with my happiness that when I feel like I can’t attend or I have no time, he encourages me to go and happily takes the reigns with the kids. I no longer feel guilty, I now feel as though I am a good role model for my children, it’s important to take care of me too. They are learning through my actions that it’s important to be happy, it’s important to be healthy, it’s important to be active.

Here’s the really hard part…. my results… Here they are (remember I am still working)… while you look, take the time to notice not only how my body is becoming toned, tighter and smaller, but also my face.  In April I am exhausted, and red in the face, looking like I am going to drop dead.  NOW… sweaty, working hard, but smiling, and enjoying every moment.

Megan July Mix Results

Obviously I know that all things don’t work for everyone, for example, I get ridiculously bored riding the bike for long periods of time. I thrive on the dynamic nature of kickboxing. If you are intruigued and would like to give it a try, contact Amir at Fitness Kickboxing and give it a try, 3 trial classes is a mere $20, and it’s a fantastic investment in the most important asset you have, yourself.

Condors Swimming- Summer Session 1 REVIEW

Posted on July 16, 2015 by RocklandNYMom Posted in Classes, Classes for Kids, Reviews, RNYM's Picks .

Disclosure:  This is a sponsored post.  All opinions expressed are my own.

I promised further updates on (A)’s progress with the Condors so here we are.

I feel like I just wrote about Condors but as I mentioned last time, the summer sessions are two weeks 4 days a week.  We just completed session 1 and had to continue on.  Here’s why…

  • In his first month (A) overcame his fear of lessons and began putting strokes together and put his head under the water.
  • In his second month, (A) was able to swim a few strokes on his own with his head under water.
  • In our third session (A) has made the most amazing strides.  Now that he has all of the basics down, the teachers are working on fine tuning.  He has learned how to turn his head to the side when swimming freestyle.  He has learned how to float and swim on his back unassisted, and they have introduced him to a THIRD stroke.  The breast stroke.

(A)’s instructor teaches him the leg portion of the breast stroke.

Breast Stroke Learning

I am impressed EVERY DAY when we attend classes.  He made me buy him some goggles so that he can see with his head under water.  I should mention as an aside that his teacher has the patience of a saint as he readjusts the goggles that constantly fill with water.  I have NEVER had to drag him to a lesson. He smiles through the whole time and then begs for more.

(A)’s instructor fixes his goggles (again).

July 2015 152

What has really blown me away is not just what happens in lessons.  It’s what occurs when we are swimming for leisure.  Safety is of course our foremost concern.  Both of (A)’s grandparents have pools that we frequent.  Although he is now tall enough to stand in the shallow ends we have always been and remain super careful.  He hasn’t been really confident or able to swim, UNTIL NOW.

The kids sit together ready to jump into Gran and Grandpa’s pool.

IMG_6555

This past weekend he shocked us (totally in a good way).  He swam unassisted in the shallow end and then eager to show off his new skills, he jumped into the deep end (of course under supervision) and swam to the edge without assistance, SEVERAL TIMES.  We are ALWAYS diligent about pool safety, but there is a lot of relaxation that occurred within me when I realized that he was able to swim to the side on his own.

(A) swims by himself while supervised (that’s the deep end).

IMG_6563

Ashley was right from our first conversation.  After about 3 sessions (sessions I should explain were months, and now two weeks at a time), he will be able to swim.  He’s not perfect by any means and still has work to do.  He needs to perfect his breathing and continue on his form.  I absolutely trust that he will under the tutelage of the Condors instructors.

July 2015 165

(A) really loves class and as long as he does we will continue.  I have no Olympic aspirations for my son (even though that would be really fabulous) but what he has already gained from his experience with the Condors is priceless.  RNYD and I have already discussed when (E) will begin (next September when she is 3).  After watching (A) progress we know it is a must.

(A)’s biggest fan watches him swim, and looks forward to when she too can take lessons with the Condors.

Building a Foundation- Condors Swimming Month 2

Posted on July 2, 2015 by RocklandNYMom Posted in Classes, Classes for Kids, Reviews, Thoughts.. .

Disclosure:  This is a sponsored post.  All opinions expressed are my own.

I promised you a monthly update on (A)’s progress so here we go…

I have to admit, I thought when the parents at the Condors Swim lessons warned me that we would become addicted they were joking.  We had signed on for one month of lessons.  At the end of that month (A) was doing so well and enjoyed it so much that we had to sign up again (read our review here).  Here we are now at the end of month two, just having signed up for the first summer session, and here’s why.

(A) adores his teachers.  I actually get in trouble if we are running late.  At the conclusion of his classes, he always tries to talk me into purchasing another session for him.  Finally, on days when he doesn’t have class, he asks if he can go.

084

Aside from that is what he is accomplishing during these lessons.  At the end of month one he was looking good, starting to gain confidence in the water, even submerging his head.  At the end of month two I can happily add that he is “swimming”.  That is, he can put his head under water and kick at the same time.  He is moving.  I am actually so mad because the one lesson that I had to miss because of another engagement, RNYD took him, and it was the first time that (A) achieved this feat.  I remember them coming home running in the door saying “I can swim!”  RNYD came in right behind asking why I hadn’t told him that he could do that… The answer, he hadn’t done it yet.

103

087

114

So fresh off of his success he is excited to start intense training (4x a week for 2 weeks) in summer session 1.  All I can think is, if he has done this well only attending twice a week, how much will he gain at the end of this session?

How can I tell he really loves it and wanted to do it again?  He asked for the additional lessons for his birthday, in lieu of toys.  That is HUGE for a 5 year old.

We are really excited too.  Ashley mentioned to me during one of our first talks that once he was “swimming” the fine tuning would begin, and that is where we are.  I cannot wait to see him continue to develop.  He LOVES every moment of class and so do we (he even tells me I don’t have to walk him into the pool area anymore, he knows the drill).

091

The best part?  I am glad that he is swimming and will continue to become a good swimmer. It’s a huge part of our lives (both grandmothers have pools).  RNYD and I both swim well.  More than that, he will be safer.  Confidence and a good foundation in the water will give us piece of mind to know that we can spend time at the pools and the beach.

I am over the moon with his progress in the Condors Swimming program and cannot wait to post again in 2 weeks and show you more!

Condors Swimming Program

Posted on June 3, 2015 by RocklandNYMom Posted in Classes, Reviews .

Disclosure:  This is a sponsored post.  All opinions expressed are my own.

As parents we have a lot of worries.  One of the biggest during the summer is that of water safety.  It’s no wonder that we all start looking for somewhere to have our little loves take lessons during this transition into summer.  For me it had become a really big worry.  RNYD and I are fish, we adore the water and we would of course love the same for our children.

(A) was enrolled in mommy and me swim with me his first summer (at 1 year old).  We had a blast that year and the following year.  When he turned 3 it was time for the alone class he had a bad experience.  He fell into the water and didn’t feel safe afterwards no matter what.  To compound things his baby sister had a small issue and ended up in the hospital for a few days.  We left the same exact time he had fallen into the water.  Needless to say, he developed a thing about swim lessons.  Refusing to go (literally shaking at the words “Swim Lessons”).  Luckily, he still enjoyed swimming with myself and RNYD in the family pools so we knew all couldn’t be lost.

We let it be until this year.  We knew that we had to get him some good structured lessons, even considering hiring privately in our family pools.  That’s when I met Laurie from the Condors Swimming program.  We had coffee and we spoke about (A)’s fears.  She agreed that it was wise to leave him for a while and not mention it and then suggested that we begin attending this May (2015).  That would give him a good amount of time to “forget” the experience, and some good time to mature.

Ready for class, I thought this was going to be a nightmare.

Ready for swim class

May came and we were all set to go.  I had no idea what to expect when we got there (I was impressed that I got him into a suit and to even to watch).   Although hesitant at first, Ashley (the program director) came over and spoke to him, and took the time to introduce him to his instructor personally.  She did this for EVERY child, and brings them over EVERY class.  His instructor was warm and welcoming and invited him into the water.  Then they had something very special that I think solidified for him that he would take a chance.  They have a platform that they put in the water with handles for the kids to stand on in between turns.  Safety.  He had an island he could stand on, he didn’t have to sit on the side of the pool where he could fall in again.

The amazing platform that makes all the difference.

swimming platform

Even better, when the swimmers start getting comfortable, they can practice dunking their heads and kicking while their classmates (each group is a ratio of 3:1 max at the beginner level) take a turn.  Swimmers get a TON of individualized attention in their half hour class, and all instructors follow the same curriculum teaching the basics of swimming.  In addition to the small student teacher ratio, there are also lifeguards on duty as well as other instructors out of the water.

(A)’s instructor gets the class ready for the water.

Well, (A) loved it from the very first class.  When the half hour was up he begged for more.  The next day, he asked if it was swimming day, and was sad when it was not.  On Thursday when it was time, he was dressed and ready to go when I arrived home.  Again, at classes’ conclusion he begged for more.

Happy camper after his first lesson.

AprilMay 2015 330

By day 3 (A) was one of the students who was dunking their heads and kicking in between turns.  His instructor makes him feel comfortable and listens when he says he is nervous.  She is strong with him, but understanding.  She uses several different techniques with him to help to work on his form.

Eager to take advantage of his love for class, and the time we have I spoke with Ashley and asked what I could do at home to reinforce the skills taught in class.  She was able to provide me with several different “fun” ways to practice without making it work.  As a coach myself, I understand that an hour of pool time a week will not turn my son into Michael Phelps and would like to help with the process, but I don’t want to overstep my bounds or reinforce the wrong things (although a good swimmer I don’t completely understand all of the nuances involved).

(A) improves with each session, and continues to beg for more after each.  He really loves the instructors (he is happy to stay and chat them up afterwards if they are available).  I can barely believe that the month has already passed. Of course considering if I should sign (A) up for the next session, I asked that Ashley sit with me and discuss his progress at the last class.  She took the time to personally speak to me about his progress.  She noted his big wins:  he comes to class happy and ready to learn, he wants to stay longer every time, he is learning the mechanics and not needing so many reminders.  I was glad and interested to hear that on average (of course some quicker and some a little slower) it takes 3 months of consistent lessons to become a “swimmer.”  Ashley was able to explain to me that the meaning of “swimmer” is putting ones head in the water and kicking at the same time.  That mastering that fear along with doing something else at the same time is the key, and that once that is achieved, the fine tuning can begin.

We adore going to the Condors swim lessons twice a week.  (A) is signed up for the month of June now and I cannot wait to watch him blossom.  He is getting great instruction in a super safe environment (not to mention some good exercise).  I cannot wait for (E) to be old enough to begin (probably by next spring!).

After speaking with Ashley and as a coach I do have the following recommendations.  If your schedule permits, sign up for the 2x a week classes.  One half hour a week (sometimes skipping weeks) although financially attractive, does not offer enough time to reinforce skills and aid children in becoming comfortable in the water.  Also, remember that everyone learns at their own pace.  It is unrealistic to assume that your child will learn how to swim in a month (after all it took them longer than that to learn how to walk).   If you are going to register for lessons, assume it will take 2-3 months for it to stick.  I cannot wait to update you all on (A)’s progress next month.

Trust Me I’m a Jedi

Jedi PhotoThis kept resonating with me while I was observing class at The Workout Place.  It’s more than just a karate class, and Sensai Arnie makes sure that it’s apparent.  It’s truly amazing to me how many different lessons are taught in just one class.  You see, I am a bit of a Star Wars buff, and what I find appealing about the Jedi order is that being a Jedi is not about having a light saber and fighting the sith, it’s a balance, it’s about peace, it’s a way of life.  Similarly, becoming a member of The Workout Place is more than joining a class, it’s a community just like being a Jedi and here’s why.

(A) and I showed up early for class.  I am not a fan of being late and I wanted to be able to introduce Sensai Arnie to (A) as well as talk about being in the class to take pictures and not being intrusive.  When we arrived Sensai was cleaning up.  After introducing himself to (A) he asked if (A) would help him.  Right to work they went cleaning cubbies together.  Sensai is great with kids, he is sort of like a Sesame Street Character.  He finds ways to connect with them on their level, while respecting them and making them feel super important, because they are.

As the other students started arriving, (A) began to get a little nervous.  His confidence from before started to slowly melt away.  The students and parents noticed and each introduced themselves to (A) and encouraged him to go and have a good time.  He wasn’t ready.  All I could think was “great this is going to work out well.”  I remained calm and Sensai Arnie told (A) that when he was ready he should just jump right in, don’t worry about it.  Sensai greeted each student and asked them if they were good this week, and if their rooms were clean (music to my ears).  He holds them accountable for what they do at home and at school as well.

So (A) sat with me as I took pictures in the beginning.  All of the other students know exactly how these classes work.  They know how to line up and get ready.  So much so that a student who is good and responsible gets to lead not only the warm-up but then some of the different activities later on in class.  This is not dependent on ranking (although there are a few things that are) it depends on your willingness to volunteer and take pride in leading.

As class continued (A) became more comfortable and finally jumped in.  He did very well for his first time, and for being one of the youngest students there.  While students practiced their forms a fellow student even took him in the other room and worked with him for a while.  (A) had to be reminded a few times to sit correctly while waiting (patience, yes he needs to learn patience) but I was so very impressed at how focused he was.  He had to be, that’s the atmosphere in the class.

Students for the next class began to arrive near the end of class when the students played a few games (all strategically geared toward specific skills).  The older students who would participate in the next class, jumped in without prompting and helped Sensai set up and run the games.  They kept the line moving and encouraged their younger mates.

What Arnie is teaching doesn’t end there.  In his fun and enthusiastic way he is always embedding a myriad of lessons.  Work harder, work as a team, the easy way is not always the best way, follow directions, lead confidently.  A particular lesson that sticks out in my mind is the reward for working hard.  Students arrive with piggy banks and at the end of class they earn pennies for doing well.  It doesn’t end there.  On the windowsill on the side of the lobby there are three large jars, to teach the students to give back to great causes.  One for animals, one for people in need, and one for cancer research.  Students can choose a charity and put their pennies in it, and more of them do than don’t.  It’s not a requirement to put them in there, but they choose to.  (A) chose the Cancer jar.

(A) had an amazing time at class, demanding that we return this week.  We are, and here’s why.  I love watching him concentrate and listen the way he did last week.  I love the lessons that he is learning.  It is more than just the usual respect and confidence that you would look for in a regular martial arts class. It is so much more.  Sensai is dedicated to developing the whole child, mind, body, soul.  They are responsible for their own actions, in class and outside of class.   They pick one another up when help is needed.  This is a place I would like for my son to be. UPDATE:  (A) has been attending class here for the past month and I am beyond impressed.  He has learned much and even led his first exercise the other day.  Several people have attended introduction classes on my recommendation and were so impressed that they have signed up.

Kickin’ It!

Posted on March 16, 2015 by RocklandNYMom Posted in Classes, Out and about..., Reviews .

Disclosure:  This is a sponsored post as I was invited to a class at Fitness Kickboxing.  All opinions expressed are my own.

Kickboxing…. It’s not something I ever saw myself doing.  Working out yes, kickboxing no.  It just never registered with me as something I might want to try.  So, naturally when Fitness Kickboxing invited me to try out a trial session (actually 3 sessions, I’ll explain later) I was intrigued, and nervous.  As a soccer player I am admittedly spastic with my hands and arms in general and I was afraid that 1. I was too out of shape and 2. I would look really stupid.

Saved by one of RNYM’s newest employees.  Ashley has been attending Kickboxing since October, and she has lost 21 lbs working with Amir.  This didn’t get me off the hook mind you, I still had to do the class (Amir wanted me to know about it first hand).  That’s ok, admittedly I NEED to work out.  But I took pictures of her doing it because she is experienced, and well, I rarely let anyone else touch my camera.

Meet Amir.

I can say with confidence that I am super glad that she got me to come.  I haven’t felt this strong and aware of my body in a long time.  I am actually going back this Wednesday for my second of 3 sessions.  One of the things that I was really nervous about was looking stupid in a class full of people who had been doing this a long time.  What is nice is that Amir and the attendees have created an atmosphere of support and family.  There was no competition to be the best, everyone was friendly and helpful.  When I asked if I could take photos, they all said no problem, I took that as a good sign, and they weren’t worried about having their pictures taken all sweaty.  My kind of people.

A photo of the class as they work on some strengthening.

Training felt a little like college preseason.  Muscles burning, I may have wanted to throw up once or twice, but it was different.  Instead of my coach yelling at me to move it or push harder, Amir walked around and encouraged us in a positive manner and even offered modifications for those of us who were terribly out of shape and had difficulty with some of the positions.  Class was fast paced, and there was always something to do.  Amir was targeting (at the classes request) bums and abs.  When we weren’t on the bag or gloves, we had exercises to do.  It was a lot like circuit training, you work all the necessary parts but in different ways.  I like that, no time to get bored.

Water breaks were readily available, and as we worked Amir walked around encouraging us and correcting our form.  The encouragement became really important toward the end (I never knew that punching or kicking for 30 second intervals could be so exhausting).  At the end of class everyone high fives to say well done (it sounds so cheesy written down, but it was awesome and relevant).  It totally reminded me of the way my collegiate teammates cheered one another on, a real family.

Amir gives Ashley a hand while I take some photos.

It wasn’t until class was over that I found event more really great information about Amir and his program.  This is when I was informed that the trial is actually 3 sessions.  What does he charge for this intro? $20, not $20 per session, $20 for all 3.  The reasoning behind this is that although I feel good after 1 class, apparently you feel soooo much more amazing after 3 (I will keep you updated).  This is when I got really nervous, (A) had been upset that I had to leave in the evening and I told Amir so.  So he invited him to class.  Yeah that’s how family oriented he is.  Moms and Dads are encouraged to bring their kids to observe, and read or color on the side.  He feels it is important for them to observe their parents taking care of themselves, and he is right.  In fact, both Ashley and I will be bringing our kids tonight.

Amir’s services don’t stop there, he isn’t just there to train you and send you home.  His philosophy is that you have to train the whole person.  You need to work on positive thinking, and change the way you eat, exercise alone won’t make the body changes most people are looking for.  This makes me excited, because a good workout always makes me want to eat better, I start feeling good.  Amir does it all, he helps with nutrition plans, offers eating advice, measures and takes pictures of you to help you along the way.  In fact, he is so full service that you can send him pictures of what you are eating for him to comment on.  He utilizes his social media accounts (twitter, Instagram, and FB) to promote healthy living and encourage you on your way.  Last week he had to cancel a class for snow, and posted Homework for those who wanted to get a good workout in anyway.

Ashley and I take a moment to pose together after class.

I stayed behind and spoke with Amir for an hour but it could have been much longer (I had promised (A) that I would be home to tuck him in so I was already in trouble).  I love what he was saying.  Positivity from all around.  Eat well, live well, train well.  Teach your children to do the same.  Come work together as a family.  All right on, all exactly what I personally need.  I am looking forward to tonight and my next session.

If you have been on the fence about starting an exercise program I highly recommend Fitness Kickboxing.  It’s difficult to really explain how I feel, but it is way different than I used to feel when I went to the gym on my own to work out.  I feel like I have purpose.  I have teammates.    I’m looking forward to my return as opposed to dreading going and doing the same old thing.  I am excited to see what we will do today, and if my stamina has increased.  OH speaking of which, for those of you who love those crazy running races, he has a Spartan class too.

Amir’s Newest Special!

March Challenge FItness Kickboxing

How do you get started??  Just come down to a class (click here for full schedule) and sign up for a 3 class trial.  Even if you only stayed for the 3 classes $20 is a heck of a deal, but I think you will end up sticking around for more.
