Fashonista’s First Dress

Posted on June 5, 2021 by RocklandNYMom Posted in Uncategorized .

Disclosure:  This is an unsponsored post.  My daughter however did design this dress and if you should purchase one she makes a small commission.

My little fashonista has been working on drawing “fashion” for as long as I can remember. During lockdown we worked super hard at encouraging and developing hobbies that our kids enjoyed, so that our time together was special. As you know (A) took up cooking and has become quite the chef.   At 8 years of age (E) started a social media page that was available mostly to our friends and family.  A few months later she has a small Facebook following and shares some of our fashion finds, as well as our fashion projects.  She received this great sewing machine from Santa for Christmas and CANNOT WAIT to learn how to use it (summer plan).  I CAN’T find a local fashion class to enroll her in, she is still too young.  So we took matters into out own hands.

We found a site called cow cow where you can upload and create your own designs of their clothing.  It takes a while to arrive but we took a chance and designed one for fun.  When it came it was ADORABLE.  SHE LOVES IT! She is so absolutely proud of herself.  She got some great feedback on her Facebook page so we decided to create a link to purchase!!!  This site took it one step further and made it possible for her to make her own store!!!  This means that she can earn a small amount of money on each item that is sold.  Check out the official Emmie’s Closet Sales Page HERE . As with any online clothing company the sizing can be odd.  This dress runs true to size- she is still wearing this size 10 even though she is a 12.

Purchase Dress Here: http://www.cowcow.com/_p186422721

This little entrepreneur didn’t stop there, since she didn’t want her brother to feel left out, she decided that she would design a t-shirt for him!  (SHHHH Don’t tell!) The kids shirts and the women’s’ run SUPER small so please size up- the men’s shirt fits better.

Purchase Raglan T-shirt Here: http://www.cowcow.com/_p186422724

Mens Shirt: https://www.cowcow.com/men-classic-monster-cotton-tee_p186563330

She even added SHOES!  https://www.cowcow.com/classic-monster-movies-kids-canvas-slip-ons_p186422727

Since she just created these and this is our fist time posting, I can say that I am not yet sure how the “selling” will go.  I know that she is excited, and if she sells even one item she will be OVER THE MOON.  She wants to add to the classic monster collection especially since there isn’t much in that category for kids like her who truly enjoy them.  This summer we plan to add more to it and work on sewing so that more original designs can come your way!  I hope that you enjoy!  Be sure to check her webpage for future designs, and remember that since creation and shipping take a while (about a month) if you are interested in having one say for Halloween, you should order soon <3

RNYD and I have been looking for a Lake House since we first met.  It has always been our dream to find the perfect family getaway, and eventually move there full time in retirement.  We are well suited for lake life, loving the cool outdoors, fishing and wildlife.  Last year be we began looking seriously, and were lucky to find the perfect hideaway in Lake Ariel PA.

This gated community is located in the Poconos and boasts, 2 pools, 3 lakes (the largest being the one with two beaches to hang out at), a ski hill, tubing, 9 holes of golf, mini golf and so much more!

We purchased this fall and have spend all of our free time since fixing it up to our liking and relaxing.  We have some time that we cannot use in the upcoming months, and our loss is your gain!  We have made it available to rent!!  Check availability on our listing as well as a full set of photos, and amenities. Performances, Recitals and Concerts are BACK!

Posted on May 10, 2021 by RocklandNYMom Posted in Classes, Reviews, RNYM Savings!, RNYM's Picks, Things to Do!, Travel .

Disclosure:  This is a sponsored post.  All opinions expressed are our own.

I KNOW everyone is craving some normal.  Now the kids are back to school (even mine starting this week), Broadway is selling some tickets for this coming fall, and even my students are coming in and reporting that they have been vaccinated.  I want to take this opportunity to champion all the children’s classes and activities that found ways to continue on thus far.  You guys are amazing!  This includes (but is no limited to) our directory members Dance Central PA, New City School of Music, Coupe Dance Theatre Studio, Swim Like a Fish Instructional Aquatics and so so many more.

Virtual instruction and performances have continued on, with most offering a hybrid or full accommodated return. Although all had the best of intentions, my children were uninterested in virtual performances last year, and I am sure they are not the only ones.  With more time to prepare this year, they have secured outdoor locations, and some MAJOR indoor performances that we have been looking forward to can continue.

This is what spurred this latest article.  Although (E) has not been able to dance this year (virtual just doesn’t work for her and with her health concerns we couldn’t risk it), (A) has been doing his drum lessons virtually since March of last year.  We are lucky enough to have a full kit at home to work with.  Each time a virtual recital came up he politely declined, wanting to perform live.  The event he was so looking forward to (playing at the Rock N Roll Hall of Fame) was postponed, and he was really nervous that it would be cancelled.  He even got to perform a NYSSMA piece for the first time this year, and had to participate virtually by recording him playing.  He doesn’t love that, but was a trooper.

We just received an email from New City School of Music  with information regarding an OUTDOOR in person-performance in June. (A) was all over that- is like playing at a festival, or a party!  He is so stoked! Truly, there’s an option for everyone and that’s what I love.

Information: June 27th we’re doing a hybrid recital! We’re doing outdoors in person here in Zukor Park here in New City on Sunday June 27th. We’re very excited about that. Everyone will be safely socially distanced.  We’re renting the stage from the town for students to perform on.  And we’re also going to continue with the online option.  So students who wish to perform virtually can still do that, and we’ll post that on our YouTube page.

Then we received word about a new Rock N Roll Hall of Fame date. (A) couldn’t be happier.  We get to take a little family vacation and he creates the memory of a lifetime (you’d better believe I have a pinterest board ready)!

Information: We’ll be performing in the Foster Theatre, located on the 3rd floor of the Hall of Fame August 21.

As if that weren’t enough, Sam and the staff at the music school realize that getting your child to practice may be difficult so they have added zoom practice sessions to their list of offerings!!!

Information: Twice a week students can log in to a Zoom practice room to practice with other students, and we have a live proctor there to help students practice.  Students can ask questions – how do I work on this, or that?  We’re getting a lot of really great feedback on this and it’s keeping students motivated. And on top of that, every time you log in to the Zoom practice session, you can earn 3 points towards your practice challenge wristband.  You can earn 1 point for practicing at home, you can mark it off on your practice chart and 3 for practicing in the practice session.  So be sure to check that out – check your email for the dates and times and we’ll see you online for the Practice Sessions!

With amazing things like these coming up, its no wonder they have just reached the milestone of having 650 students enrolled at the school (congrats guys).  They will just keep growing.

RNYM is Going Solar!

Posted on May 8, 2021 by RocklandNYMom Posted in RNYM Savings!, RNYM's Picks, Uncategorized .

Disclosure:  This is an unsponsored post, all opinions expressed are my own.

About 10 years ago RNYD and I met with someone about going Solar.  We have always liked the idea.  We were clear that we didn’t want any panels on the front of our home, as they won’t go with the traditional style.  We were assured that there wouldn’t be.  When it came time to do the paperwork, they had added some to the front.  We never did it.

Fast forward to two months ago.  Good friend and New City North Pole Airport genius Gary went solar, with panels only on the back side of his house.  He runs a large home, as well as his airport off of it.  My electric bill is ASTRONOMICAL.  He told me to call his representative Liz, so I did.

She was lovely, and could in fact add the panels only to the back of my home.   With rates ever climbing and the shut down of Indian Point inevitable, I don’t see it getting any better. We have signed, and our plans are already into the town, (they do all that for you!!!)

Here’s what I am excited about.  With the purchase of the panels- I am still saving $150 a month going solar, that’s HUGE!  Liz and her team do all the leg work for you, its simple.  My house will be a bit cooler because of the panels themselves, AND I know we are doing a little something for the environment.

I can’t wait to tell you more about the process.  As soon as we move forward I will report.  Right now I want to give you Liz’s information in case you are interested in hearing more: 914-649-8923 liz@empiresolarny.com

Pandemic Children’s Services

Posted on May 5, 2021 by RocklandNYMom Posted in RNYM's Picks .

Disclosure:  This is a sponsored post.  All opinions expressed are my own.

This past year has certainly been a DOOZIE.  We have all been through the ringer, kids included.  Some kids have really had great difficulty in their online or hybrid settings (face it, it’s not for everyone), others have anxiety due to the virus, some kids had little blips or learning issues that have been magnified and we now realize that they need some help to make it through.  As a High School Teacher and Mom of 2, I have literally seen it all this year.  My students, or my own children have literally run this whole course of issues.

Below are some services available that we wanted to make you aware of that are available to help, because we know 1. These issues exist and 2. They are difficult to find.

For Mental Health:

Is your child anxious, do they need someone to speak to?  This doesn’t have to be long term (it could be though), it can be a short term, we are in a pandemic thing.  Don’t ignore mental health, these kids have a lot on their plates.  I have seen more and more parents asking around lately for such services, here is our rec.

If your child is struggling with stress, anxiety or depression Courageous Kids Counseling can help! Through therapy, they’ll find the courage to explore problems and reach new heights. Our virtual appointments make it easy to get the support and help you need. For Learning/Attention Issues:

Did you always think your child may have had issues sitting still and focusing? Do you think that they are having difficulty learning because there may be a slight “blip” that needs to be addressed with some sort of services?  I have had several students classified this year, and I get it, the coping mechanisms they used to use, weren’t working in the new atmosphere.

Top Ten Mother’s Day Picks 2021!

Posted on May 4, 2021 by RocklandNYMom Posted in RNYM's Picks .

Disclosure:  This is a sponsored post.

Last year you all loved our list… so here’s our picks for 2021!

Being a Mother is it’s own reward, but if you are looking for a special way to celebrate her this month, here are some of our suggestions.

 1.  Give a Memory…

MOMS LOVE PHOTOS!!  They can be with her- or without (we recommend with as they become such a treasure).  Contact any of the photographers in our directory, and see what they have got to offer.  Jennifer Tesker’s Spring Minis are posted below, there’s flowers, a swing, and a chance to capture some truly special images at Stokes Farm. While you are there, grab a sweet treat and some flowers for the garden (a favorite gift of mine, is to go pick out all my flowers).

Already have memories and looking to display them? Did you know that Jennifer Tesker offers a service where you send her your wall and she designs the perfect layout???  JenniferTeskerPhotography@gmail.com

2.  Order in…

Luigis Logo

http://www.luigiogradys.com/

(845) 735-9110

I enjoy going out to eat as much as the next gal…. but sometimes I can’t get it together, and I would just be more relaxed if I could stay at home and eat some great food.  Well Luigi O’Grady’s makes that a little easier with their awesome Mother’s Day menu.  Their food always delicious and affordable, there are some great choices on their Mother’s Day Menu.

3.  Take her out…

Maybe you don’t want Mom to have to clean up after supper and you want to treat her to a night out on the town…. After the year that we had, she may be a little shy doing so.  Lots of local places are offering dinner, or brunch etc, but I generally want to do something a little different from the norm.

One place I found that I thought was SO cool was this Peony Farm.  It’s only 55 minutes away, and OUTDOORS, which I adore.  Although I love it for the flower picking, day activity, and photo opportunity with the kids (no surprise to our readers), they also do this super cool DINNER in the field (BYOB) that I think is just amazing, and will have to try sooner rather than later.  Dinner not for you?  They have Friday Night Picnic opportunities as well.

4.  Let Someone Pamper her…..

Moms can use some pampering once in a while- despite enjoying it, the mom guilt is real, and I always feel badly doing something for myself, even though my husband constantly tells me to go ahead.  Here are some places that might fit the bill, what you are interested in.

  • The Wholeness Center
  • Joseph Taylor Salon (offers a ton of services- but Barbara is the BEST with hair)
  • European wax center- yes I would love this, no its not an insult.
  • Ms. Diva Nail Salon (on route 304)

5.  Give her a home made keepsake…

Everyone knows I am partial to handprints- stop on by Jills Ceramics and made a one of a kind memento for the special women in your life.

mother's day pottery

6.  Give her the gift of time…

Every mom would love if someone had a cleaning service (woman/man-whatever) come in and give my house a good once over.  With how crazy busy life is I feel like I am always playing catch up and can’t get the whole house clean.  If I could walk in one day and just have it sparkle, it would just be amazing. :o)

We use and recommend Dutchmen Cleaning- Michele and her team are amazing!!!

Cleaning

7.  A sweet treat...

Chocolatier Matisse is the BEST, Danielle offers anything you can dream of; like her chocolate high heels filled with goodies, her smash flowers/hearts, or a gift box with chocolate covered strawberries and a little wine <3

8.  Check off that “Honey Do List”

Visit Wallauer Paint & Design Center for all your home improvement needs.  You can even schedule a custom window treatment, or interior design session for the special woman in your life.  Can’t decide on a color?  No problem!  Right now there is a coupon for a buy one get one on Benjamin Moore Paint samples.  Additionally, they have a coupon for spending $40 or more, and monthly contests to celebrate their 100th Anniversary!

9. Workout/Lounge Gear

I workout, frequently.  It’s something I love to do, some women love to lounge in leggings.  Either way, I’ve always been a whatever’s in the drawer type, but this past year I started purchasing “sets” of workout clothes.  I fell in love with Ellie.  The clothes are adorable, and comfortable, and affordable.  Somehow it makes me feel even more inspired to go ahead and work out.  I find the sizing to be spot on. (excuse my messy bedroom, here’s a photo of one of my outfits).

(this link is an affiliate link, meaning if you purchase through it I get a small reward)

10.  A timeless piece of jewelry…

You know how we love to shop local.  We also LOVE excellent Customer Service.  You get both at Bourghol Brothers Jewelry in Congers. I have designed my own pieces, gone and browsed theirs, you name it.  They are always sweet, they notice your style and what you like (yes my husband has gone on his own and they REMEMBERED exactly what I was looking at, unplanned) and have great suggestions.  I just recently reached out via email for a communion gift (info to come) for my daughter and Andrew was back to me within 24 hours ready to go.

BASICally the Perfect INVITE!

Posted on April 25, 2021 by RocklandNYMom Posted in Birthdays, Events, Items, Party, Photo Obsessed, Reviews, RNYM Events, Rockland Babies, Services, Specialty Items, We're Having a Party .

Disclosure:  This is a sponsored post, all opinions expressed are my own.

I am a High School Teacher.  More specifically, a teacher of Senior students.  It stands to reason then that at this time of year (every year) I am very focused on Senior events.  All which culminate in the big event, graduation.

Last year the kids didn’t get much leeway in terms of celebrating.  This year, we are able to again have some gatherings, especially when outdoors, and distanced in some way.  Having just spent a year (give or take a few months) with so many restrictions, it’s no wonder that people may be doing things up a bit more than usual.

Well, it’s almost MAY and time to get planning.  I know that lots of people have made the switch to online invitation platforms, but I still LOVE a paper invitation.  In fact, if you follow me you know that I am VERY picky about my invitations.  I like them to usually be photograph invitations for that personal touch (also makes a nice memory), something you can really personalize (180 colors- and you can customize EACH element on the card).  In addition, I like the invite itself to be of sturdy card stock.  There is something about receiving a card or invitation in the mail, that is made of nice thick card stock.

So, as always I will share a favorite with you, and then explain why.  You need to check out Basic Invite.  Their invitations, announcements, photo graduation announcements etc are completely customizable. While looking around I found that they had some really cute nurse graduation announcement choices as well (quite a few of my students go into nursing)!  They are printed on sturdy card stock, attractive and fast, but there’s more.  There are 40 different color choices for envelopes (which are also peel and stick, thank goodness)- so your envelope can coordinate with your card!!

There are also these SUPER cool clear (we called them see-through) ones you can order!!!

Basic Invite has great customer service, and even a service where they ADDRESS the cards for you!  Don’t have time to upload them?  There’s also an address capturing service!!!  As a super busy working mom, this is HUGE!  This allows you  to share a link on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, or any other social media to request your friends and family’s addresses. The addresses are stored in your account and can be selected during the design process. Basic Invite offers recipient address printing at no cost on all card orders!!

Then ANY TIME you are sending cards (think parties, announcements, holidays) you can click on the people you want to send the correspondence to and BAM, Done. For me personally, this is AMAZING, it’s hard enough to find time to design all of these things let alone sit and write them all out.

My 5th grader is also “graduating” this year.  So it’s even more on my mind.  We may do a small family event to celebrate for him (think immediate family BBQ), since he is missing so much. Well, it stands to reason that I would need to look at invitations or a grad announcement.  I was able to find a few that I liked, customize them just the way that I wanted, and then order SAMPLES to see which I would like the best, yep that’s right custom samples!  Changing colors and fonts as well as the style or card was super easy, you do not have to be super computer savvy to do it.  I even let AJ customize one (can you guess which one?).  Uploading the photos was also easy as pie.  I was given an ETA of one week and they arrived as promised.  You may have watched me unveil them on our social media stories.  Excuse the cell phone photo, I couldn’t help myself… The quality is impeccable, in fact, we have decided to make my new nephews birth announcements with Basic Invite as well.  ANNNNNND, we may have fallen in love with this Birthday Invite…

Let’s get social!  If you want to see more Basic Invite check them out on their social media handles: Facebook –Pinterest –Instagram –Twitter!
