FEBRUARY  WEEKDAY CLASSES FOR YOUNG CHILDREN

Children and parents or caregivers come for nature fun. Admittance closes 15 minutes after the start of the program.

NEW DROP IN PROGRAM:

Wild Encounters Storytime (3-5 years old)

Nature discovery for youngsters, with a parent or caregiver. Enjoy a nature themed story and discover the wonders of nature while exploring fields, forests or landscaped grounds. Let your imagination run wild! Dress for outdoor activity. Except in extreme weather conditions, a portion of each class is spent outdoors. Fees: Members $9/child/class, Non-members $12/child/class

MON 1-2PM

CLASS DATES- FEB 2, 9, 16, 23

PRE-REGISTER PROGRAMS:

Mother Nature’s Storytime (2-4 years old)

Children, with parent or caregiver, enjoy winter days at the center with nature themed stories, nature walks, live animals, and/or crafts. Dress for outdoor activity. Except in extreme weather conditions, a portion of each class is spent outdoors. PRE-REGISTRATION& PRE-PAYMENT REQUIRED. Tuition per 6-week session—if you join mid-session, rates will be pro-rated.

Fees: Members: $50/child.  Non-members: $90/child.

WED 10-11AM

SESSION 2- FEB 18, 25, MARCH 4, 11, 18, 25

NEW! WeePaint* (2-4 YEARS OLD)

Children, with parent or caregiver, explore new art materials, experience new textures, learn to be creative in a group setting, and socialize with other children. PRE-REGISTRATION & PRE-PAYMENT REQUIRED.

Tuition per 8-week session- if you join mid-session, rates will be pro-rated. Fees: $144/child plus Membership

NEW! MODIFIED DROP-OFF PROGRAM:

Nurture Through Nature* (3-4 years old)

Children explore the world of nature through a hands-on learning experience incorporating science, literacy, math, art, music, and movement. Parents or caregivers must stay on premises for the duration of the program.  PRE-REGISTRATION & PRE-PAYMENT REQUIRED.

Tuition per 8-week session- if you join mid-session, rates will be pro-rated. Fees: $280/child plus membership

FRI 10-11AM

FEBRUARY CAMPS FOR GRADES K-3

Give your child an action packed time during the school vacation. Our naturalists will involve, amuse, and inform your children with different activities each day, including animal study, nature crafts, nature exploration, and nature games. Snack included. Enrollment is limited and pre-registration and pre-payment are required online. Medical forms must be completed prior to the start of camp. See website for details, forms, and cancellation policy.

MORING SESSION: 9:30AM- 12:30PM

AFTERNOON SESSION: 1-4PM

FOUR-DAY CAMP/CLASS SIZE: 10

Fee per session: $190/child

Plus $85 membership fee

*You must become a member in order to register for camp. Membership helps support our educational programs and animal museum.

FEBRUARY EVENING PROGRAM FOR ADULTS AND HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS:

WED, FEB 11, 7PM REFRESHMENTS/ 7:30PM PROGRAM-THE GREAT ATLANTIC GARBAGE PATCH: WHAT IS IT? HOW DID IT GET THERE? WHAT CAN WE DO ABOUT IT? A plastic bag blows into the Bronx River, and washes into the Long Island Sound—so the story begins. But where does it end, and what’s the impact? Follow the story of the plastic bag as it moves through our neighborhoods and into our oceans. Learn how our garbage is collecting in our oceans, and why a “plastic gyre is dire” is not just for fish and sea birds, but for humans as well. Short informational video followed by presentation about the great ocean garbage patches. Program presented in partnership with the Sierra Club Lower Hudson Group; designed for adults and high school students. FREE and handicapped accessible.

WEEKLY SUNDAY WALKS FOR ALL AGES

TEACHING TRAILS: A COMMUNITY PATH FOR ENVIRONMENTAL EDUCATION

EVERY SATURDAY & SUNDAY AT 11:30AM 

SATURDAYS: FEB 7, 14, 21, 28

SUNDAYS: FEB 1, 8, 15, 22

Join us for a Guided Trail Experience through the woodland forest. Discover who left that track, which tree makes the best animal home, or who uses that fallen tree for protection. Program runs approximately 45 minutes. FREE

FEBRUARY WEEKEND PROGRAMS

All program fees are per person and include admission to indoor exhibits and Animal Museum. Space is limited; pre-payment and pre-registration are required for some events. Children under 2 are free. Admittance closes 15 minutes after the start of the program.

ANIMAL ATHLETES

Can you jump as far as a frog, hold your breath longer than a turtle, or out-stare a snake? Come learn about some of the most amazing athletes in the world. Meet some of our local animal athletes and then put your own athletic prowess to the test. Members $5/person, Non-Members $8/person

SAT, FEB 7, 9AM

HUDSON RIVER EAGLEFEST

GNC is partnering with Teatown Lake Reservation and other environmental organizations in a daylong program that celebrates the Bald Eagles’ return to the Hudson River and other waterways of the Hudson Valley. The day includes birds of prey shows, children’s activities, environmental exhibits, and more. Activities take place at Croton Point Park, with a shuttle bus leaving from there and traveling to other eagle viewing sites along the river. WINTER WILDLIFE

Come for an hour of fun as a naturalist introduces some favorite Nature Center animals. This entertaining and informative program allows visitors to hear, see, smell, and touch many of our fascinating, furry, feathered, and scaly friends. Recommended for ages 5 and over. Members $5/person, Non-members $8/person

SAT, FEB 14, 2PM

LOVE IS IN THE AIR (AND IN THE DIRT AND WATER)

Hearts and flowers are nice but don’t forget the cockroaches, tarantulas, snakes, and worms! Bring your little valentine and learn about what we really love. Be prepared to open your heart to some slime and dirt. Hey, we are naturalists, it’s what we love! Members $5/person,

SUN, FEB 15, 2PM

CHINESE YEAR OF THE SHEEP

Get an early start celebrating the Chinese New Year! Come meet our resident sheep and goats, and learn about our clever and woolly friends. Members $5/person, Non-members $8/person

SAT, FEB 21, 2PM

FINDING AND FEEDING WINTER BIRDS

Join us on a winter walk to learn what birds in our area like to eat and where they find shelter. The walk includes a visit to the Birds of Prey Aviary and busy bird feeders, as well as a search for our more elusive feathered friends. FREE for Members, Non-members $8/person

SUN, FEB 22, 2PM

MAPLE SUGARING AT HOME

Come learn the simple steps of how to make your own maple syrup. Dress for outdoors. Members $5/person, Non-Members $8/person

11AM GEM HUNT I AGES 5-7

2PM GEM HUNT II AGES 8& OLDER

Think rocks are dull and boring? Think again! Discover the treasures of the earth while learning about local gems and crystals. Each participant receives a geode to take home. Note ages for each session. Members $8/person, Non-members $12/person
