Yorktown Stage-Shrek the Musical

Yorktown Stage is a great theater company in Yorktown Heights, NY that I stumbled upon while looking for children’s theater.  They perform all sorts of family friendly shows throughout the year.  This past weekend was opening weekend of “Shrek” the Musical.  Later on this season they will also be performing “Jack and the Beanstalk”.  In addition to their performances, the company also has classes, workshops and camps for kids (and some for adults too).  The theater is also available for rent.  Yorktown Heights is about 45 minutes away from Rockland, not bad for an afternoon.

Tickets to a show range from $19-$26 and this Sunday’s performance was sold out. If you visit their website you can purchase tickets in advance or at the box office.  You also have the ability to pick your seat right online (very nice). Suggestion for those with younger children, opt for an aisle seat as you will most likely end up getting up for the potty at least once.   There are some refreshments available (candy and water).  Parking is limited, so if you are not there early, you will have to park on the street.

The show was adorable.  The cast was super professional and very talented.  The costumes are great (we were mesmerized by a pink sparkling gown worn by one character).  It is clear that the cast has been trained well and loves what they are doing.  It is a magical experience for children to be exposed to the stage.  From the first word on stage (A) was hooked.  When he was trying to talk to me he wouldn’t even turn his head.  (A) is 3 years old , he talked about what we saw all the way home and for the rest of the day.  I would say overall he is a bit young (it was difficult for him to sit still that long and focus), but that for children 4 ½ and up its perfect.  They get the theater experience without the major investment of a Broadway show or the city travel.  It’s a great way to expose them to the wonder that the stage has to offer without breaking the bank.  When I asked him if he would go again, he gave a resounding “YES!”  I’m going to wait a bit, but I am looking forward to the opportunity to return!  This is a great value for parents with younger children that they would like to bring to the theater.
